This is a scenario that has happened to me over the last two days and I want to know if anyone has ever had a situation like this.

I have a view that the violence in Northern Ireland was nothing but a mudering slaughter fest that proved nothing. Now some people down here in the South find the North a touchy subject as they have not experianced the violence. One such person found my views annoying and has threatened to kill me when i go back to school I have managed to (hopefully disarm this situation) but I have a feeling this will come back to haunt me.

So I ask you the Escapist has this or something like this (i.e. Your personal beleaves) ever gotten you threatened or in trouble before.

And please dont derail this one as I really would like feed back.

The irony is that they threatened to kill you. (and cheers for the link to this).

It's stupid that people don't allow you to express your view without it becomeing extreme.
I realise I just posted a thread mere minutes ago stating that I thought people with stupid opinions were essentially dumbasses, but hey, I live for the hypocrasy.

I hope you've managed to get out of the situation by the way.

I don't really know much about the Troubles, because I'm born in the UK and ignorance is something that shadows the subject for me, mostly because it's rarely mentioned. And as i mentioned earlier, it's ironic that the person threatened to kill you.

And I agree with your point.

I've been threatened because I'm not a big football fan :S so because I wouldn't get involved in the violence I got involved in the violence ... woohoo I broke the scheme of things round here.

I have been threatened (not with death though), but have somehow managed to avoid/talk myself of it (without running), I think the best thing to do is not bring it up, even if you feel they are wrong (unless you think you can handle them should trouble occur).

Some one threatened to break my legs if they so much as saw me around school once...

All this just because I didn't quite understand the appeal of football...

I remember one amusing incident, where one guy kept making stories up about girls he knew, and what he did with them. They weren't true. I knew the girls in question.

I'd keep interrupting. It ended like this:
"Anyway, so we went back to my place and..."
"No you didn't."
"I swear to God, if you interrupt me one more time, I'm going to..."
"You mean you're going to try!"

He swung for me. I sidestepped him, put him to the floor with a foot to the back of the knee, then a foot to the face. :p

Visiting some relatives in California, pretending to be like Steve Irwin in a Starbucks almost earned me a face full of hot coffee. I never get that kind of trouble in Australia.

The moment people threaten me like that I grow so indignant about it that I dig myself a massive hole and won't stop taking the piss out of them. This is a bad thing as I am a weakling. Luckily people seem to assume that seemingly fearles responses to serious threats are a result of actual confidence rather than lack of self control, and consequently feel like they've threatened the wrong guy.

It's true though that some subjects turn people into psychopaths, Jade Goody of all people still turns the local emotional hand grenades into a bloodthirsty mass around here.

I'm a atheist in a small town that no one has ever heard of, And I go to a school of evangelical Christians, they are all mindless and annoying. But When I finally told one of my friends that I was an Atheist he asked me what that was :| so I told him and he told everyone else and now I'm a outcast, people often tell me to change my believe or they will kill me. I just laugh at their Ignorant ways.

I would prefer that purely because I can mess around with peoples religious beliefs (The CAD tactic) but politics are something different entirely.

Violence is the only option of the desperate/scared/mentaly challenged.

You'll pretty much trump anyone who threatens violence by asking them, (calmly) "why?". I'll go out on a limb and guess that this guy threatened to kill you because you were making some fairly convincing points about how backward the logic of all the killings in NI were.

Omagh Massacre (IRA)
Civilians killed by car bomb in the centre of a crowd in Market Street, Omagh. 2 babies and 9 children among the dead. 2 of the dead were Spanish tourists. Total murdered 29 (31 if you care to include two unborn children)

If he can justify that violence then he's needing serious help (his life must be pretty f'ked up: abusive parents/siblings or worse). You have to get this guy talking, you have to let him say his point of view in a way he can believe that you are listening to him. Once you understand that it's acceptable to disagree with someone and still remain friends then life gets all the more better for it.

If you're smarter than this guy then you'll be able to listen to his opinion and realise that life is filled with people who don't know how to express themselves and there is a certain way of dealing with them without being confrontational.

Good luck

If you walk away from this unscathed and have only lost an arguement you've still won.. (because you've given him something to think about at least)

I used to get threatened (with catfights, mostly) because I'm white... So, not really because of my beliefs, but just because of my genes.
If you've never seen a true catfight, you have no idea how much I never want to be in one.

I've gotten into heated arguments because of my beliefs, but I haven't exactly been threatened with bodily harm because of them.

Well, Northern Ireland is a separate country for a good reason.

To answer your question:
If someone threatened my life I would call the police.
Age is irrelevant.

Don't worry about it, they always say i'm gonna kill you or beat you up but they are cowards. They won't do anything.

99.9% of the time threats like that are just people talking out their asses. It's the .1% you gotta worry about. I wouldn't aggravate the guy further, just avoid him and keep a watchful eye. Or hell, if you're really worried about it, go up to him and apologize, and admit that you were at fault (despite what you really believe.) It's not worth dying over something this silly if you think he's really going to make good on his threat.
