Hate for newbies/noobs and general unfriendliness in competitive online gaming

It's a catch-22 situation. No one likes feeling "dragged down" by someone who isn't very good, but those players can't improve if no one is willing to play with them. Everyone is a newb once, but most people tend to forget that.

I did not start playing online competitively until recently. Started with RE5 and then Street Fighter 4. On the second occasion, I stumbled upon a newbie that started calling me newb or noob.... ah I do not remember. Either way, I ended up training him and showing tips to the guy that same day. Nothing good comes from being an ass. And if you know that you are inexperienced, admit it. Yeah, you are kinda dump to be playing with experienced people while you are a firststep, but not admitting and being useless at the same time is even worse. Newbies admitting that they lack knowledge and play online are bound to be shouted at but they are also bound to get better, like everyone. The power of change is at everyone's hands. And trust me, that power can be a very effective tool against gamers that are known to get angry over first timers. Getting angry messes with your head and ruins the experience. And if you have a microphone, it ruins it for everyone. Be patient. You were once a newbie too and you probably were not any better. But even if you were, you have to help others get better too. Don't bash them.

Humans are worthless assholes in real life, do you expect a game to change this?
Cause hope is for free, buddy. You can have as much as you want.

Can't really say much about L4D, as I haven't played it, but I can tell you this much, having played way too much WoW: PUGs suck (Pick-Up Group, incase there's actually someone here who doesn't know). Why? Because it's made up of A) random people, B) who don't know each other, and C) don't expect to run into them again. That means they don't put any effort into making friends, which in turn means that they act like assholes. That's why I always preferred to play in a casual guild. Even though I ended up surrounded by noobs all the time, running people through instances over and over, etc, I could have fun, because everyone was in it for the long term, and I always ended up making great friends.

Now, compare that to playing a competitive game (I was never into PvP) where everyone wants to be on the winning side, with both sides being PUGs... It simply can't end well... Insults will be hurled back and forth. New players will be ridiculed and bullied until they leave.

This is one reason why I HATE multiplayer games in general. Fucking humans... :p

The moment one guy get's an easy shot, he'll think he's "the shit" and claim everyone is a noob. And the only problem with that is the sad, sad fact that he plays the same game over and over and over to where he can make those easy shots. Not everyone crams the locations of weapon spawns into their minds like these people.

Take note that you're not some sad little man who plays no more than the same 2-3 games =)

COD4's pretty much the only game I play online and the community if awful.
I don't mean to stereotype but most of that community are squeaky little kids who take the game far too seriously and can't take losing and it would probably kill them a little inside to say 'well played'.
And if they're not calling someone an in-bred or telling them they slept with their mom last night they're normally shouting at americans or any other foreigners in the game. At which point I find it actually embarrassing to be British.

I'm sorry but people really do some very stupid things on Left 4 Dead.

Falling off ledges by themselves, not cowering in a corner with their team, staying near windows, using molotovs and pipes improperly, running off by themselves to get pounced, spawning as a boomer too soon and getting shot through a wall, going on suicide hunter runs, etc, etc ,etc.

Sometimes being called a noob is pretty benign and not to mention fitting; only a few people get offended by it nowadays anyway.

I'm no expert and I've done all of the above myself but you have to learn from your mistakes rather than complaining about the mean players online.
