so just tonight I watched Paprika, while not as good as Perfect blue it was certainly a fun mindscrew (and quite reminicent of Inception)

oh and that soundtrack!

so why am I mentioning an Anime movie? well thats thing....I have a confesion to make

there are certain aspects of "Anime" (or more the stuff surrounding it) that I absolutly....[i/]loath[/i].....like really really loooathe

not just the bizare sex stuff....or certain artstyles (if hair is the only feature that makes the charachters look different...ugghh NO!)

but...well...you know..

the otakus/weaboos...I mean the baaaad ones

this is the reason I have a real....[i/]aversion[/i] to getting into more anime...just now Ive been sticking to feature films from the 90's (next on my list is Princess Mononoke and Ghost in the shell) so I can kind of distance myself from that steryotype (I kinda feel like if I start liking anime I'll have to move on series's....)

[b/]now just before you starting getting your nerd rage on[/b]

YES I know alot of you here that like anime are in no way like that..as are alot of anime watchers

YES I know its kind of illogical and downright hypocritical

YES I know I really shouldn't care about others who like stuff

but yeah...its just this thing I have

also unrelated but Tali from Mass Effect....dear god, I feel dirty for saying I like that charachter

so yeah...any other things/mediums you just can;t get into/over because of the fan-base assosiated with it?

Obligatory MLP answer?
Well okay, I don't enjoy the show, but a lot of the fanbase put me off even more.

I also dislike talking about my love for certain indie games because of a massive amount of the indie community being full of pretentious cunts, both consumers and developers. [sub](Jonathan Blow and Phil Fish in particular)[/sub]

And I can kind of relate with the Mass Effect stuff. I enjoy the games, I think they're generally well written, but when people start discussing the romances it seems 99% of the time it's people going "I'm actually in love with this character, I wish they were real" and I'm just sitting there thinking wtf.

No, not really. There are things I like that have fanbases that I generally avoid but I wouldn't avoid things purely because I dislike people who like it. That said I may have avoided this because I have been given a certain picture of it by the fans.

Also I suppose if there were something that was impossible to get into without having a lot of contact with the fans, that might put me off. For example if band X only ever played live so you had to go to a concert and be surrounded by fans. Or maybe a tabletop RPG, if I had no one else to play with and the current playerbase are dumbasses...actually Dark Heresy and Rogur Trader RPG kinda fit into this category...so yeah those.

I don't generally let notoriously bad fanbases get in the way of my enjoyment of something, but if it's a particularly bad case, I just won't broadcast the fact that I'm technically a part of said famously bad fandom. It's just asking for trouble.

Not because of the fan base per se, but hype aversion and hype backlash are serious problems with me sometimes. If something is so hyped up that it's allegedly nothing short of the second coming, then I really have a problem trying it only because I know it's not the second coming, so I suspect the hype is trying to cover for inadequacies I'd find a buggerance.

Usually, however, I do tend to try things out, but then annoy the fanbase by being down-to-the-ground and telling them how the thing isn't nearly as awesome as they make it out to be.

It would have to be My Little Pony and any kind of anime (Inyuasha, Naruto etc).

I have never seen My Little Pony and I really don't want to because I find some of their fans very creepy. I have a friend from college on My Facebook and he is obsessed with it. Creepily so... everything he does is My Little Pony related and I just cannot get my head around it. I hated the show in the 80s and when I heard My Little Pony was a genuine little girls TV programme I just thought, "WTF... you're a 21 year old man. Stop watching My Little Pony!"

I am aware there are some My Little Pony fans on here and I am sure you are all not as creepy as him but... yeah, he's creepy and as a result I wonder if other fans are creepy. I'm sure they're not but yeah... once bitten and all that.

But I like other things despite creepy fanbases.

The Beatles have a wide range of fans but there are a select few who just obsess over John and Paul's relationship. They think it's more - they tow through numerous books highlighting all the connections. I have no problem with fanfiction and slash but please don't write huge dissertations proving John Lennon and Paul McCartney were at it like rabbits. I don't think their wives would have approved and I'm sure they got enough female attention to warrant not looking at each other.

No. There would be a lot of things I love that I wouldn't get to watch or play any more if I did that.

I've avoided trying MOBA games partly because of the terrible reputation of their player base.

I tend to associate old school RPGs with the more arrogant and elitist elements of their player base.

That's about it. Most fans don't really annoy me, with the exception of...

This.

I went on the BSN (Bioware forums) once in search of some technical advice for a bug. It ten minutes I was running for the door. Those people were going to forever taint Mass Effect for me. Urgh.

& to think the Bioware forum thought I was strange for suggesting a future Krogan romance some day in a Mass Effect spin off . ;)

I avoid shopping at Whole Foods because I try to avoid pretentious douchebags whenever I can. Does that count?

To be honest, it's the whole furry thing. I went through a phase where I actually looked at myself as one, and frequented a forum and such. But after a while, I began noticing how majorly fucked up some of the other furries were. It got to a point where I didn't want to be a part of it, and I'm glad I made that decision.

The Beatles fanfiction is actually fantastic. With Strings Attached was actually approved by Paul McCartney as it was an epic fantasy. But... the slash... it's so bad. Paul has been become the winging bottom and John the powerful top.

Then they try to prove its reality. I recommend not travelling to that part of the net.

If I had any interest in the Beatles, that would probably infuriate me. It would be like people trying to prove that Jamie and Adam from Mythbusters is in a relationship... I can already imagine the slashfics. *shudder*

If you want to keep your sanity, avoid the Bioware Forums.

Also any gathering of Sonic fans.

I don't tend to avoid the actual end-product because of the fans, but I sure as hell avoid the fans.

I've never avoided something because of its fanbase, I simply avoid the fanbase itself.

But there was a time when Portal started to suppurate and fester due to all the pretentious fan dribble covering it. Thankfully that's all over now, and I can once again enjoy the game without having to shower afterward.
