Have you ever avoided something because of its fanbase?

DOTA Games, if experience from playing HoN and LoL has taught us anything. Not unless there's someone that's going to suffer alongside me, so we can suffer in glorious agony together.

No not really. If something has an irritating fanbase, I'll avoid the fanbase, not the whatever it is they're fans of.

I generally dont notice the fan base because I rarely show an interest it has to be pretty massive for me to notice like in my face no matter where I turn massive which rarely happens but if it does it almost always puts me off the product/whatever.

Anything with fans will generally have some pretty weird majorly obsessed people among them but I would say these are the exception rather than the rule I might be a fan of a game but I wouldnt change my name to the main character dress up in cosplay and fill my room with said games memorabilia but someone probably would and by their very nature they would gather more attention than me. Most people are pretty moderate with their fandoms and so dont really get that involved.

So overall I think its a bit stupid to be put off something due to its perceived fanbase.

If my dislike of fandoms in general governed my taste in media, I would have never discovered great music and TV shows. See I don't like the entire idea Pagan/NSBM (national socialist black metal) and think they are all twats, doesn't mean that the music isn't good, heck Nokturnal Mortum's The Voice of Steel is probably my favourite album of the last 5 years!

I have a tonne of weaboos at my school, that doesn't mean I can't watch Cowboy Bebop or Darker Than Black because I don't to be associated with the guys that watch Naruto.

I like MLP:FIM (shoot me) and even though I think alot of the fans are extremely obnoxious that doesn't mean I can't appreciate a well made show, same for Avatar, when I see people shipping characters and writing fanfiction it does not bother me, mainly because I can just leave the forum that they are on and forget it ever happened.

Oh, the only thing that really annoys me about the MLP:FiM fandom is the haters, I don't give a shit if they bash the show, it's just that I think they are way more irritating than bronies because they pretty much bring it up and rant about the show at even a small mention of ponies. For example if I read a comment on a youtube video unrelated to MLP but the comment is something like "this video was 20% cooler than the others!" its irritating but what is more so is the guy that writes a 2 paragraph long wrong rant why the show sucks as a response.

Everything has fans that are ovey obsessed with its subject matter, whther it be ponies, cars, sports, games, genres, music.

You cant hide from the lot of them forever, its nearly impossible to do.

Mac products, it is not just because of the cult around it. It's the inflated pricetag that offends the frugal person in me.
Except for the computer screens that they make. Those are actually worth the money

I'm a Brony. I'm not ashamed to be a Brony. But i do feel bad when i see how many people seem to try their hardest to make the fandom look bad. I mean, there's Rule 34 of prety much everything but it's especially bad mit FIM, seeing how it's basically bestiality and just how many people are into it. It frustrates me that that's the first thing many people associate with the fandom, even though there's some really great stuff in there.

Other than that... i like some anime and it depresses me how how most of the discussion of even the more... complex stuff mostly revolves around shipping and which couples are the hottest. I never got why homosexuality is so fetishized in most fandoms anyway but that's a whole different topic.

I also lime some furry art and have rather fond memories of the Sonic Adventure games (No, those two things are not related), both which have some pretty terrible fans.

I usually made a point of looking into such "notorious" media before judging, but I must confess that MLP made me flinch.

...for about a month or three.

University of Kentucky Basketball. I'm from Kentucky, and while from Louisville in particular, I still feel like if they are playing anybody but us it would make sense to root for UK. But DAMN. Fucking UK fans....

Hehe I'm pretty sure paprika came before inception , in the same way that perfect blue came before the black swan.

Don't worry otaku culture is focused on a very small set of anime, If you watch good stuff then you will find it's shockingly mature (you are already on the right track with the works of satoshi kon, paprika and perfect blue). But there is lots lots more, try:

Ghost in the Shell; start with the movie. Fascinating sci-fi

If you liked Paprika and Perfect Blue then Paranoia agent is made by the same one (exept it has extremely deep subtextual meaning behind the mind screwiness.

If you can take extremely slow pacing Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze are there to depress and confuse you. Also sci-fi in the loosest sense of the term.

The works of Gainax are amazing to say the least, examples are Neon Genesis Evangelion (prepare to be depressed this is one of the weirdest and most brutal psychological shows you will see). FLCL is upbeat and short. Basically everything Gainax touch is made of Gold.

If you are interested in more you can ask me.

Basically these are all anime that are just too good for the stupid fan culture to reach, things you want to avoid if you don't want to see that side; long shows like bleach and especially Naruto. "Moe", cutesy girls doing cutesy stuff, much of it is retarded, it takes a while to find the gems in the rough and most of the time it is not worth it.

As for me I rarely avoid things because of the culture. I can always avoid the fans, and I don't have to be a walking billboard going, LOOK AT ME I LIKE ANIME STUPID ANIME FANS GATHER ROUND. I can enjoy it in peace.

Edit: Saw you already have Ghost in the Shell and Princess Mononoke on your watch list. On the note of Princess Mononoke, watch the rest of Studio Ghibli's Stuff as well if you like it.

If it's a book, show, movie or a singleplayer game, then I don't see the point of avoiding something purely because of its fanbase. I'd rather avoid the fanbase than rob myself of a possibly excellent source of entertainment.

I will avoid online (mode of) games if their fanbase is bad enough however, because I'd be forced to interact or listen to them during play.

My Little Pony...kind of

Not so much that bronies are annoying it's because the show is always associated with little girls.

If I watch the show I'm afraid I might like it and then I'd have to defend myself for liking a show associated with a little girl fanbase. Oh and the bronies with Rule 34 on the show. Then again it is Rule 34, so it applies to every show.

In related news, Howard Stern recently came out as a fan of the show. Still not enough to get me to watch it (and I honestly don't know what would, maybe if the hype died down I could watch it knowing nobody cares anymore).
Howard Stern... fan of the show! HAHAHAAHAHA, let me laugh harder! If you're talking about those twitter posts, those were shopped. He's the guy who's the worst kind of hater imaginable, the one who thinks we watch and thinks we ALL get aroused by the 80's show. It's basically what he's been saying.

Also, don't be scared to watch a show because it's got the girly stigma. If you really are scared, don't tell anybody at all and it'll be fine. But really, as long as you weren't a bit of a twat before then people in real life will be fine with it.

I lasted about three seconds into watching that haha. I'm pretty much the same way with a lot of anime, for pretty much the same reason. There's some really [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0464804/] quality [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0594503/] Japanese animation out there, but you wouldn't know it if you were just looking at how the American fanbase responds [http://www.google.com/search?q=anime+room&hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ZAMLUK7iCqfY6wH6372HCg&ved=0CE8QsAQ&biw=1680&bih=63] to it [http://www.justmanga.com/jmcover/NARUTO-HEADBLAC.jpg].
