Have you ever avoided something because of its fanbase?

The only thing I can think of that I've avoided due to the fanbase was the Twilight book series.

but even then, it was only partly the reason, the main reason is that (no joke) nearly everyone I talked to about it said in sucks, and given the details I keep hearing, I think I can see why.

Does anybody remember Sonichu? That killed any love I had for the Sonic Mega Drive games and Pokémon...

also unrelated but Tali from Mass Effect....dear god, I feel dirty for saying I like that character
She's easily my favorite character in the series but I never got the supposed negative side effects of liking her. I hear that it is mainly that the Bioware forums take their affection of her way too far but I never went on those forums so I wouldn't know. Frankly I don't let it bother me because for just about every character or show there's always a handful of people who take it way too freaking far. If I let them all get to me, I wouldn't be able to enjoy anything. Live and let live I guess.

Just because you don't like certain types of animes or their fans that doesn't mean you should limit what you watch in any way. Just watch whatever and if you hate it then fine.

The entire MOBA genre.
I have to go with this one as well. The genre isn't one I would normally be interested in anyway, but any curiosity that I might have had in even trying it out has been completely killed by hearing what the people who play it are like. Plus with that genre you can't really avoid fans. You have to interact with them to participate in it in any way. Screw that.

Probably the most recent example I can think of is Glee. That's all I'll say.
This. So much this. When I heard Glee is going Rocky Horror I knew that all the Gleeks would storm Rocky Horror Picture Show and other adaptations with comments of "Glee made it better" and "I know all about Rocky Horror. Gleeks forever <3" and I wasn't wrong... Goddammit I hate that show and goddammit I hate the fans...

Other one that comes to mind is Spoony's fanbase. Everyone who has gone to his site and read the comments knows what I'm talking about...

Well, not really. I don't let fanbases or fandoms deter me or encourage me because they're simply random people. I don't ever need to interact with these people and even then, so what? One fan of this thing may be a saint and extremely intelligent while another fan is a diabolic imbecile. Sometimes these people outweigh one group of the fandom or another, but whatever man, I won't judge said thing immediately, just those specific fans pissing me off.

If said thing the fans care about interests me enough, I'll check it out regardless of certain fans. If it doesn't interests me, I won't actively search for it. If said fans piss me off, they'll piss me right the fuck off.

A lot of popular game franchises have fans I don't want to associate with. (Skyrim comes to mind when the fans obsess over it moreso than the rest of the series) The more a fanbase endlessly talks about something the more I get turned off from it.

Anime is something I can't get into partly because I'm not into the same things the writers are into but also because...its the anime fanbase we all know what messed up stuff has come from them.

I hate a certain portion of the MUSE fanbase who're idiot pop kids that heard of them because of twilight/resistance and have never listened to anything pre Black Holes and Revelations. But I still love MUSE. And plenty of those fans will hopefully explore their earlier music eventually.

I really think threads like these should just be locked, they're just places for people to call fandoms names and hate on them, probably causing a flame war. They all end in flame wars.

OT:None, because if a product's good I don't fucking care if there are dicks in the "fandom" of it. I'm not going to stop loving MLP because of some sick twat making a sex plushie of Lyra, why would I? It's like a person not eating food because of fat people, it makes no sense other than needless hate and a person who might be avoiding something they may like because of some bastard.

Nope, fans have never steered me entirely clear of something.

I try to always hate, or like on my own merits.
