Always do it for flash games. Always. Seriously, flash games can have some great gameplay, but the sound just...god....its...so...bad....

Don't play Forgotten Sands. As for WW, I get the feeling the Dahaka was only invented after they decided to start cutting their own wrists. The Sands of Time was not a happy game, it just didn't need grunge music and grimy environments to pull it off.
Is the game that bad?
Well, after realising SoT was by far the best one, they clearly tried to copy everything about the game, only they missed the very best thing about it and couldn't capture the rest of it very well at all.

Possibly the most cynical game I've ever played.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky - Every time a fight started this god awful techno-something crap would start playing. I had no choice but to turn it off. A disappointing part of a disappointing game.

That's probably the only time a game's music was so harshly painful that I saw myself forced to turn it off.

Is it even worth a rental? It does sound a bit lacking.

Not particularly, I suppose that it depends of the game.

Weak gunfire sounds can make or break a game for me though.

Pretty much every MMO ever.

Some of them have decent music but du to the prolonged gameplay, anything would get monotonous.

Sorry, I don't think this thread exists. Someone said something bad about Nier....

Fighting games usually cover me for this. I just prefer my own music while playing them...

Sorry forgot...Every dynasty Warriors game ever.

Wow, Nier? Really?

That's among my absolute favorite game sound tracks of all time and I haven't even played the game yet.

To each there own but WOW!
My mind=Blown

But assuming we are excluding flash games and what have you I don't think I have. There have been times I muted the music to listen to better music, like the Nier sound track, but can't recall muting it because I hated it.

Edit: Another post reminded me of one. Ulduar in World of Warcraft.
Oh. My. God. Wiping once on XT-002 Deconstructor permanently destroys that ever so painfully short loop, more than once and there should be blood.
I mean I like the sound, it's just so mockingly terribly short and filled with spite.

GTA IV... and pretty much every other sandbox game that features a car radio.

I pretty much hate the radio on principle these days, so any game that tries to replicate it has about five dozen strikes against it going in.

As for turning off in-game music? I've never turned if off because I hate it, but I've turned it down so I could hear dialogue in both Mass Effect games. For some reason, either the music is way too loud or the voice-overs are too soft at times.
Both Dragon Age games had this problem due to the fact that the out-of-combat music and effects were VERY soft in comparison to the in-combat sounds, so if you wanted to listen to the ambient music while you were running around, when you got in a fight the noise would blast your ears out. It was AWFUL.

Anyway the only game I play where I turn the music off and listen to something else is my MMO, and that's because I've heard all the music in that game a million times already. Granted, sometimes my playlist doesn't exactly mesh well with the game, so I turn it back on occasionally.

I say it IS worth renting for the combat (Though the elemental upgrades are way overpowered to the point of making it super easy here) and platforming.
But don't expect to care much for anything anyone says and if you liked how the Prince used to look you'll have questions about how he can even lift his own head with the sheer bulk of his new jaw structure but yeah.
Good gameplay if you forget the rest of it happened.

It's not so bad I hate it, it's just so redundant unnecessary and meaningless I can't recall any of it.

Jet Set Radio Future. Not that the music was very bad (I wasn't that fond of it), but ohmygod did it get annoying.

Listen to the chorus.
Over.
And over.
This was the exact song I was going to mention. The only time I've ever had to just mute a game just to play it. Most of the other tracks were fine, but that song right there is ear-rapingly bad.

The World Ends With You.

Okay, look: those tunes are hella catchy and make mew wanna head bop like there's no tomorrow. For the first hour of hearing them. But Christ do they repeat themselves. I had to mute my DS and listen to a podcast every time I picked that thing up.

Uh.... I'm sorry but... how exactly? o_O

Easily the best part of Nier was the music. Even people who hated the game loved the music. >.>
In fact, that was something the creator addressed before. Said something about how he thought it was funny that people liked the soundtrack more than the actual game.

ANYWAY, on topic, a recent game I bought, Ar Tonelico Qoga, has some of the most annoying and awful music I've ever heard in a game before. May just be that I'm 2 hours in, but the opening music and voice acting is awful that I just had to turn it off for at least a while.
That's very true.

I really didn't like the combat, and the last gen graphics, but the one thing i appreciated about the game was the music.

In fact, I'll go far as to say it was one of the best I've heard in any game ever.

Starcraft. And Diablo. And World of Warcraft. All Blizzard games actually, except Lost Vikings, which apparently was the last fun-to-play Blizzard game.

Burnout 3: takedown

Don't get me wrong, it has some good songs, but EA had their demographic slightly off and they put in a song that went something like "This is a brand new problem, a problem without a clue, if you know the clue, it's easy to get through". It was TERRIBLE, it had retarded lyrics and was so tame it killed the whole ambient of the game.

Since they had it implemented in their EA-trax system, I could turn all the songs on and off individually, but not that song. I still can't figure out why.
