GTA IV

it got too repetative, and in free play everyone was doing the same thing.
I respected this game because you know it was from Rockstar

Gears of War. I can respect the mechanics, and I will admit that the game had fun points, but I can't say that I actually enjoyed playing it. It just wasn't all that fun to me. I know other people love it, but I just found it shruggable in terms of enjoyment.
^This and Halo Series.

In fairness, I do respect Fable 2 for what they're trying to do with games and of course the concept sounds amazing on paper, but unfortunately due to the fact that they're more restricted then they obviously think the game has drastically suffered and the quality taken down by several notches.
You get all sorts of win.

I respect System Shock 2 for what it did for the Action/Adventure Genre, but I never once found it a satifying FPS experience on the level of say, Quake.

I'm enjoying everyone's responses. It's interesting to see that these huge releases, that pulled these incredible reviews, didn't connect with some people at all.

Hmmm...I note that the staff hasn't really chatted back, just a few scattered comments.
Are you calling me out? ;)
I suppose I did impugn thine honor, perhaps a duel is in order?

Pistols at dawn?

I'd prefer rapiers at noon as I am a more accomplished swordsman and not really a morning person.

"Have you ever played a game that you respected but didn't enjoy? What game was it and why?"

Bioshock. I HIGHLY respect this game and I can see why people like it. Its a shooter that doesn't suck, there's depth to it, its *not* a shooter set in a post apocalyptic world. You're not humanities last hope. Then there's the side hacking mini game just because. Great graphics too. In the end, I didn't enjoy it because I'm so tired of shooters right now. Killzone, Gears, Halo etc. I'm just tired of them. This is why Bioshock is a respected game to me and maybe someday I'll enjoy it when I play it again.

Use a rapier if you want, I'll be there with a bowie knife, in mouth, dressed in my customary buckskin loin cloth.

Yes, I am the last of the Mohicans.

I have two to name.

CoD 4:
Whilst Call of Duty 4 was a fresh breath of air from the World War Shooter and had amazing graphics etc etc it took away what made me love playing CoD in the first place. Being a small part of a massive battle with less advanced weapon was much more entertaining, tense and frantic than being a crack team of elite commandos or a US Marine against a force not that mauch larger than your own.
That's just my take on it.

Dawn of War 2:
I really really respect the bottle of the developers to do something new, I do but I'm afraid they didn't do it completely right. Yeah, so Dawn of War 1 and all its expansions didn't exactly follow the Warhammer 40,000 background to the letter. If I were to lead the Space Marines or Eldar in the Warhammer 40k universe as i did in DoW then Im afraid the Imperium of Man would be doomed and the Tau would take over... ;) but who cares? It was fun, the massive battles were engaging and online was extremely enjoyable. DoW 2 lost that and I can only hope one day it will jump back to the formula that made DoW one of the best RTSs out there.

I have to say that I couldn't get into FFXII as much as I wished I could. Nothing about the game is broken, and the story is just fine, but something about the game just kept me from wanting to finish it. Same for X-2.

Mass Effect. I know the game and story are great and everything, but I cannot find the heart to actually sit down and play it for more than twenty minutes. Something about it just makes me dislike it so much that I will prob never beat it.

Resistance 2 for me; I could tell they put quite a bit of effort into the graphics, but nothing else struck me as great.

If it wasn't as confusing, annoyingly shallow and more focused towards its fans (who have played the prequel, unlike myself) rather than new players (when this game is meant to be one of the game's Killer Apps), I would have enjoyed it a lot more. It played well and looked good, but did nothing for me.

Gears of War, Assassin's Creed and GTA4.

I thought the premise behind GoW was dull, uninspired and overly derivative. I also found the combat too simplistic and unrewarding. I could respect the quality of the product, particularly its presentation, but I just couldn't enjoy it.

I won't say I didn't enjoy Assassin's Creed... but I grew bored of it far too quickly. There's simply not enough to do outside of the main storyline. In a game where plot progression revolves around completing the same objectives over and over, the lack of alternative activities and points of interest is painfully noticeable. Don't start on with the 'but you can collect flags, explore the cities and complete all the secondary objectives too' rubbish. We all know that collecting flags is boring, that despite being fairly vast and expansive, the cities really have nothing to do in them other than free-running, and that the optional objectives were the only part of the game more repetitive than the plot objectives. Despite that, I still have a huge amount of respect for it as a game. The execution and animations of the free-running element are simply perfect. The game's presentation is amazing too, and I still consider it to be the best looking game on any console to date. On top of that, Altair's appearance has to be the most well designed of any protagonist in any game. It's simply badass.

As for GTA4, I wanted to love it, but I just didn't. It's not that I didn't enjoy it, it's just that I didn't enjoy it near as much as I was expecting to. I don't know if it's because I've grown out of the franchise, but I doubt it. I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more than I did if it didn't drop frames so damn often. If I buy a console game, I expect the framerate to be consistently smooth. It's a small factor when you consider the game as a whole, but it really shit me up the wall. Apart from that, I didn't particularly like the character of Nico or the 'fresh off the boat in the promised land' flavour of the story. It just didn't do it for me. That being said, there were a whole lot of things to like about GTAIV, and I still consider it a very good game.
