Have you noticed that in some of the best films of all time, women play small roles or are tomboys?

Hey, guess what. Aliens was a movie with a female lead taking on a motherhood role. It is one of the best movies made.

I can't even begin to say how much some of the comments on this thread seriously disturb me. I know it shouldn't suprise me to see such uneducated comments on the internet, but really . . . this just goes above and beyond.

There are so many amazing films with female charactors in strong leading or supporting roles that I won't even try to list them here.

For the historical movies, of course, it's justified. Before the 1960's, women just didn't have interesting roles in society. Nearly every woman was simply a housewife, and they weren't allowed to do exciting things and live their own lives.
I don't want to seem mean here, but have you ever taken a history class? There are MANY influential and important women throughout history, and no they were not all simply housewives. WOW, just wow. I am scared for the youth of today . . . I really am.
Sure, there have been plenty of influential women in history. My point is that most women were severely disadvantaged because of discrimination, so the majority of important historical figures were men. Some women were able to break from the mold, like Joan of Arc, Marie Curie, and all the women who marched on Versailles in 1789. My point is that most women were not in a social position to accomplish as much as men, even if they wanted to.

For example, look at the list of U.S. presidents:

http://www.presidentsusa.net/presvplist.html

In a world without discrimination, half the names on that list would be female, because women are equally qualified to be political leaders. Instead, it's a list of men (until 2009, white men) because discrimination kept qualified people away from the Presidency.

I want to be very clear that I'm not sexist, or uneducated. The simple fact is that society's discrimination against women left them in low social positions, even though these women would have been able to accomplish great things without discrimination.

You are likely to find that this is from the male point of view, the movie industry has been male dominated for a while. So this isn't entirely surprising although it depends at which point your definition of a strong woman shifts to Tomboy.
