I think I would read them if I ever find ones that are printed in bigger books, wider spacing, and bigger font.

Yes-- I read all three back-to-back.

When I was nine years old.

And I understood it perfectly.

I spent the next year trying to acquire a copy of The Quinta Silmarillion. I understood that too.

They were a good series.
I was going to say the exact same thing. How strange.

Yes, and they were bloody awesome!
(except for the first 150 pages of Fellowship...Gods they were boring!)

started at the hobbit and finished the two towers

there was just to many god dam poems and songs and sexual tension between legolas and Gimli

I'm horrible for large series. I can read a big book, but not 4-5.

I tried reading The Hobbit, but I gave up after the riddle game with Gollum.

That was the main reason I wanted to read it anyways. I had too little drive to finish them.

Read the Hobbit when I was but a young lad...

Lord of the Rings is one of the best epics of all time. The Simillarion is also good, but it can (and will) get quite wordy.

I've read The Hobbit, and then the 3 LotR books, about 3 or 4 years before the movies came out.
Can't wait for The Hobbit movie! :D

the hobbit is the pinnacle of tolkien's writing, and that's basically because he kept it short and light-hearted.

LOTR definitely doesn't do that, and tolkien's emotionless drawl isn't interesting enough to hold you for a thousand pages.

OT: yes, i attempted to read the books, but read above as to why i didn't finish them. i wasn't going to read it as a fucking achievement, either.

I read everything else he wrote, but not these three books. I cannot read something when I keep telling it, "you do not need to have descriptions of every tree in the forest!"

I own an abridged version of the books on audio cd and will start listening to them when I have time. I really do not know why because I already know the storyline.

I read all three plus the Hobbit when I was twelve. I don't remember anything about them except for what was in the movies. And there was some jerk named Tom Bombadil. I don't know why I read them when I obviously didn't have the attention span. I think I just wanted to be able to say that I had.

I got through the first one and halfway through the second one when I had to say kthnxbai. No offense to the man, but Tolkien can be boring as hell sometimes. I've been thinking about going back and trying it again, though.

I've read all of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and The Children of Hurin. Making my way through the Histories of Middle Earth. Also love his translations of Saxon mythologies and legends.

I have read Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, Silmarillion and some other short stories by Tolkien. However, I have yet to find the time to read Children of Húrin.

I read all three and I hated the second half of the Two Towers. Frodo and Sam are just so boring. I skipped them entirely in the Return of the King.

I really enjoyed the Hobbit and I did enjoy the other 3 books as well although I thought that bits and pieces of the books were slow and hard to get through

Read all 3 and The Hobbit, best reading I've had ever.
Also one of the few movies-based-on-books that weren't made of fail and AIDs.
You mean... besides the third one, right? When they changed the ending... the whole point of the series?

Anyway, I read them, liked them.

All of them around ten times. It's my favorite fantasy book, and ties for best book overall with Presumed Innocent.
