its to be expected; gearbox hasnt exactly proven to be competent in the development of DNF.
You should re-adjust your expectations and do some research. Gearbox have had the game for roughly 18 months, finally completing a game that 3D Realms had been developing for over a decade.

The level of histrionics has reached a level of ridiculous proportions in this thread.

I honestly don't care how bad or good it is. I'll be getting it no matter what. Not like I'm strapped for cash or anything so whatever.

I literally JUST had this theory as I was reading through. What if 3D realms DIDN'T get as far as Gearbox claimed. What if Gearbox built most of it just this past year. That would explain why it's so shitty. Maybe the REAL DNF is still out there somewhere.

I have a pre-order for the balls of steel edition, but it's more of a collector's item for me than a game. Is it so bad that I should cancel that as well?
Hell no. That bust man.

The problem seems to be less that people find it outright bad - more that it arguably tilts to the side of being completely inoffensive.
I'd say I'm definitely going to be disappointed. It seems to destroy everything that made the Duke great. That said, I'll still get it as long as it's fun.
Hey, that's not fair. Console games can do more than two flipping weapons. Just because some lazy as programmer thinks that it can't, or that he or she doesn't want to put in a God-damned radial menu is not the console markets fault.

CoD has two flipping weapons whether you play it on PC or console it's a flipping design choice, not some inherent flaw.

EDIT: Sometimes I hate the Escapist's forum system on my twitchy connection. Extrapolate the argument from here people.

I would SO laugh if that demo was just a troll move by Gearbox. That would be so them.

I really hope this doesn't surprise anyone.

But I don't care. I'm buying it anyway.

On PC this feels like a cheap console port. I was very very very very disappointed. I really wanted a doom/wolf/duke experience from the old days. The controls were terrible, the rocket launcher felt like a pea shooter, and duke is a huge pussy. Duke in this reminds me of your typical college frat douche who takes a lot of shit but the second you punch them in the nose they cry and bleed.

Rather than comment on my view of the game (I haven't got a code through yet) I'm going to make some glib comments about these threads in general.

There is so much negativity... I feel like these threads are all taking place in a London bus stop queue, everyone grumbling to each other saying 'I knew it, I said it'd be late and it was' and generally everyone with zero expectations of anything fulfilling themselves ever so slightly by having those expectations fulfilled and grumbling about being right afterwards.

Maybe I'm just bitter from not sleeping properly for a week now, but these threads pop up for every game ever, even the decent ones.

Ergh, I'm just going to ignore the negativity and go waste my time away building a watchtower in Minecraft.

People will still defend it, because "its just meant to be fun" is now used as a serious defence for something being crap.
Sadly, that is often used to defend games that portray themselves as fun to cover their horrible everything and then have lame gameplay nonetheless.

Nothing is immune to hate and people like to hate things. We could have happiness in a can and someone would come whining that it doesn't come in a bottle.

My biggest issue with this is that all the pessimists will have ammunition to use for all their pessimistic ways.

I can hear it now...

"DNF sucked major donkey scrot, now if you carry the 5 and subtract the 2 that would mean HL3 is total cock and balls"

OR

"You know that game you've been really looking forward to for like 2 years now? Well it's shit. Why? Cause DNF shattered my hopes and dreams THATS WHY!"
Not really being one of your so called pessimists we just don't want bad games to have money wasted on them. Not while their are plenty of good games being released. I called it with bulletstorm ( a rental game, a very fun one i might add, but nothing worth worrying over) and im calling it with this. Some people may even enjoy it, but it won't be great, it won't come near the high standard of titles that are going to be released this year.

And as supporters of the industry we want good games to do well. I get equally pissed when expendables gets a sequel and A-team doesn't. Where people spend their money has knock on effects. And dukes a game which probably isn't worth another full sequel after this (although xbl arcade stuff is more than welcome, because that seems like a better fit to me).

But hey feel free to call us nazi's for not being overwhelmed with joy for a game out of its era.
Okay mister righteous, You took my comment way too seriously and also seem to have made up a conversation I don't recall having with you... ?

When did I call anyone a Nazi? At what point did I voice my opinions, whether yay or nay, about the quality of a product I haven't even tried myself? Why are you talking to me with such a self righteous persona, did I hit a nerve I wasn't even aiming for?

My comment was a jest, if you were stuck too far up your own ass to realise this maybe I should also point out that my jest was meant to imply that escapists take things way out of context (subjectively speaking).

I mean, I couldn't have staged a better response. Kudos for that.

...

Seriously? I used "major donkey scrot" and "cock and balls" in my first comment... did you think I was striking up a little verbal joust? It was a passing comment on an inconsequential hate thread (it is, don't deny it... because apparently having an alternative opinion means we're doing the industry harm and calling you all nazis).

EDIT: if this comes across as harsh, well... you'd be right. Had a bad day, made some light hearted remark on a forum, got accused of calling people nazis and somehow associated myself with industry anarchists. Fantabalicious.

High standard? The main, primary reason I'm against this is because today's standards are so goddamn low that this was almost expected. If people went above and beyond, which would pretty much mean giving us the freedom of not-cover, then we'd all be good.

Duke would have been fun if it wasn't Call of Duke : Forever Warfare. That's all that needs to be said. If anything, Gearbox did what the originals did: They made it as a joke. But this time, the only people who will be laughing is the 12 year olds on Xbox Live when they get a headshot.

See, I can understand even Lost Planet 2 having regen health; It was kinda needed, but even then you could run out of it. I still play it. Regenerating health for any other reason, say 'being manly'(Sexist retardation), is just stupid.

I've never cancelled a preorder for it being god-awful. I will now. I felt insulted when I played the demo, since I went in there wanting the old days, the things I expected that were pretty much a standard for fun.

Bulletstorm was the same.

I had more fun drawing on the goddamn writing board at the very beginning of the demo, just writing random shit, then I did the rest. Then I went back, put 'Twelve more years' in red marker, then exited, deleted my demo, etc.
