During a game of paintball, a friend who played Gears of War thought he was able to roll like in the game. He dived forward and went face first into a tree.
Same thing also happened in a game of paintball, except he rolled properly, stood up and fired, only to realise all him ammo had spilled out- he had knocked the magazine off on the ground.

On some football forums, people actually recommend clubs to buy certain players based on Football Manager.
Yeah that's my pet hate. "I don't know why he doesn't just push to buy Garth Barry. I did and now Norwich are top of my division."

lol. my friend Matt is sort of like that except for he acts like he knows everything about everything even after watching the smallest bit on something. He also reads alot of books and thinks he is a literary master... I read some of his stuff and its total rubbish.

Now im a pretty big guy, and I was completely confident shooting my Dads shotguns. What I forget for account for was the rediculous amount of kick-back that some of the lower gauges have. I left with, literally, welts up and down my shoulder, stomach and hips. Good times though.

12 gauge: kills on one end, wounds on the other.

I see people all the time that shoot their mouths off pretending like they know something about guns in a game, usually saying 'Well in REAL life, such and such is like this, not like/just like in this game!'. If I had a dollar for every time I had to tell some random jackass that a full-sized rifle round could easily penetrate a brick wall at 5 metres...

My friend after playing Guitar Hero 3, so I gave him a go on my bass which I am learning, it sounded like a cat having intercourse with a squashed turtel.

Fine, as usual, I'll make the reference to one of my favourite games.
GUITAR HERO.
This is the reason haters bash the series so much. Some smug twat plays it, and thinks he can actually play a real guitar. Little does he realise that if he tried to play one, he wouldn't know how to play Smoke on the Water's riff...

A lot of people tell me TRY PLAYING A REL GUITAR, ASSHOLE because I like playing guitar hero and I also like to think I'm pretty good at it. But anyway. I know I can't play a real guitar any better than I can use the mario paint composer to recreate the entirety of Beethoven's Fifth.

I heard a guy got bitten by a snake and died because he thought ringing a bell would turn it into a slither gripper.

Yeah, this one is pretty widespread. It's getting worse now that there are more and more popular shooters out there. This is one of the most obnoxious IMO. At some point you just have to say, if you haven't actually been shooting, shut your mouth.

Back in the 8 bit era, my best friend and I played through the original Castlevania together. Afterwards, he was convinced that he was a vampire hunter in his past life, and was going to be the next Simon Belmont when he grew up.
Needless to say, I don't talk to the guy any more, and I think he got run over by a semi, thinking it was a demon or something.

Anyone notice how people who play a particular game (Eg, war, military shooters), think that they are an expert in guns and explosives afterwards?
I have a mate who is obsessed with CoD4, but know thinks he is knowledgeable on a range of weapons and knows how to stance, reloading mechanism proper way to fire them. We went shooting the other day (his first time), and he tried firing a .22 (simple Bolt rifle), he could barely hold the thing up on his own, he didn't realize how heavy REAL weapons were Lol.
Anyone else think of when someone who has played a game thinks he is an expert...?
When I moderated a BF2 forum a few years ago we had a rash of people claiming to be experts on weapons and tactics. Some of them claimed to be rangers/special forces. Others said they owned a rifle of some type and "That's not how it fires." The thing all these people had in common is that they wanted to make inroads with the community by being a guru of some sort. "Ask me about ammunition! I know everything" Type threads were common. Thank the lord most of this community has some common sense.

I think that it all boils down to the fact that people think they're much better at something than they really are [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning-Kruger_effect]. I talked about Diablo 3 fan made screen shots [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.67638#604467] yesterday, and I think that over estimating one's ability is the culprit there too. Just being able to use photoshop doesn't make you an expert at game lighting. People go to school for years and study facets of lighting and colour that you never imagine existed.

The same thing is true about shooting a weapon (notice I didn't say gun). When I was in basic training we spent a good month of 8-12 hour days shooting at pop-up targets in the 110-115 degree weather of South Carolina before any of us were qualified to shoot at people. 'Shitty' would be a pleasant way of describing the experience. Grinding sandpaper into your eye sockets and pouring kerosene in them is probably a little more accurate. On one range I didn't pee for a full 16 hours.

Can you learn anything about shooting from a game? Sure, the sight picture [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_sight] in games like 'America's Army' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Army] and Codemasters 'Operation Flashpoint' [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Flashpoint:_Cold_War_Crisis] can teach some basics of holding the rifle and acquiring a target. Recognizing small arms fire can save your life too, most gamers can now tell the difference between an ak47 and an m16. However, a game is hardly a substitute for real crawl-through-the-mud training. There's just some lessons that can't be learned in the sterile game environment.

I'm going to assume you're referring to Ft. Jackson and the hell that it is.

I had a friend that suffered from something like this. He played tons of FPS's, read Clancy books and even tried reading The Art of War thinking it would give him an insight into "modern warfare" (stopped after about 5 pages). Finally I took him to my Uncles farm and gave him a shotgun, 12 gauge I think. He tried to be cool, held it at waist level, fired, recoil took him in the nuts. Wonder if he'll ever have children...

I'm not sure about games but after 300 came out everyone became an expert on Sparta.
God after that movie came out I had to listen to friends and others who "thought" they knew anything about history say things that made my soul die a little bit.

One comment that made me cry a tad on the inside was and I shall quote, "Yeah it was a good movie but it wasn't historically accurate.". I followed that statement by trying to explain that the movie 300 was based on a graphic novel by a man named Frank Miller who only loosely based the story on historical events. After stating that I was again treated to this persons thoughts; "Yeah I know that but I really doubt there were guys like the one with blades for hands or that one that the Immortals brought into battle." to which all I could do was /facepalm.

Sorry for the rant but that comment brought back some memories.

I'm pretty much like that, except that I actually am an expert on all those things. I usually end up pointing out all the things the game excluded or was wrong on.

Which boosts my self-esteem since I dont do anything else with my life.

More like after 300 came out everybody suddenly started to believe that the area they were in WAS Sparta, despite the gajillion other people claiming the same.

I can't say I can think of anyone I know who acts like they know how something works in real life after playing it in a game, which is boring I know but I think I'm glad for that.
