I like the folks who play a couple poker sims and say stuff like "Man if those entry fees were'nt so high, I'd go out there, kick ass, and make some grip."

Have fun dude! Send me a post card, if you can afford one after they throw you out of the casio wearing a giant ass hat.
Exactly. Casino's LOVE those guys because they are the kind who forget that on the computer nobody can see you smile when you have pocket Aces!

I have a friend who believes he's an expert on military strategy because he has played 'Rome: Total War' and 'The Settlers'

to be honest a 303 is a pretty hefty round (used for sniping) but yeh i know what you mean!

'i've played cod4 so i know that the an m14 clip is 20 bullets big!'

hmm let me stop you there, first of all it's a magazine (a clip is used for reloading or 'charging' a magazine) and it's capacity is 20 'rounds'.

now i just seem like a prick, but i think you follow me

I find that there is a fine line between people using their imagination and having fun with the knowledge/world/interests they experienced on a game, and taking it seriously. I will not hold it against someone if they want to pretend their house is haunted or they think zombies are real after playing a game or reading a book (Ultimate Zombie Survival Guide is indeed a good book). However if the same person then plays a WW2 game and tries to start a debate about how things actually happened back then, irritation buttons are being pressed.

It's when things get physical that I am extremely aloof with the person. I had a friend who use to play around that they were a zombie. He then graduated into that pro-wrestling activity in games and on television - thinking he could pull the same stunts on his friends (including me) not knowing that if some of it was pulled wrong, bones could break. Aren't there stories of children doing that sort of thing and injuries resulting? Now he's playing war games and wants to get a gun to try it out (in some woods, not in a shooting range). That's the line I'm crossing. I told him that if he ever did buy an actual gun, I would not hesitate to avoid him. If he ever actually started killing local wildlife or shot someone, I would not hesitate to call the police.

But this specific friend is one of those raging psychopaths one would always be nervous around. The type of person that cannot separate reality from fiction despite age and wisdom.

One of my mates did this.... He played Uplink... And all of a sudden thought he knew EVERYTHING about hacking (completely ignoring the fact that Uplink is not based on RL hacking, but rather on "Holywood-hacking").

He even tried to hack into the schools Intranet.... And failed miserably... The attempt cost him his computer... for a month (everyone have their "own" computers in my school, since we use computers a lot in class).

Anyone notice how people who play a particular game (Eg, war, military shooters), think that they are an expert in guns and explosives afterwards?
I have a mate who is obsessed with CoD4, but know thinks he is knowledgeable on a range of weapons and knows how to stance, reloading mechanism proper way to fire them. We went shooting the other day (his first time), and he tried firing a .22 (simple Bolt rifle), he could barely hold the thing up on his own, he didn't realize how heavy REAL weapons were Lol.
Anyone else think of when someone who has played a game thinks he is an expert...?

P.S
I have NO idea about guns, weapons etc.. I've been shooting a few times, but haven't fired anything more powerful then a 303, and don't know anything more about weapons other then what i watch on "Future weapons" on the discovery channel. Don't get the impression i have a clue about weapons, lol.
You need to lay off the lol's. They get really annoying when you put them in there like they're going out of style. Which I wish they would.

I wonder if anybody has actually flown a plane after playing MS Flight Sim X? :)
There was actually a guy in I think Sweden who was able to perfectly fly a realistic simulator because he played FS X so much. I can't be assed to go find the article but it's on the internet somewhere...

I'm not sure about games but after 300 came out everyone became an expert on Sparta.
God after that movie came out I had to listen to friends and others who "thought" they knew anything about history say things that made my soul die a little bit.

One comment that made me cry a tad on the inside was and I shall quote, "Yeah it was a good movie but it wasn't historically accurate.". I followed that statement by trying to explain that the movie 300 was based on a graphic novel by a man named Frank Miller who only loosely based the story on historical events. After stating that I was again treated to this persons thoughts; "Yeah I know that but I really doubt there were guys like the one with blades for hands or that one that the Immortals brought into battle." to which all I could do was /facepalm.

Sorry for the rant but that comment brought back some memories.
You do not want 300 to be historically accurate.

Does playing Oblivion so much you think that magic is real and a valid excuse for a job is "looting" qualify?

I suppose I know some people who can be pretty intolerable about these kinds of things, not only in game though. I have one of the most argument addicted friends you can possibly imagine, everyone knows the kind, who will argue any point, however trivial or utterly contrived into the ground then piss on it, even if you make it very clear you dont care. Did I mention he generally has experiance to in game or an hour scanning wikipedia.

This might be a bit... how should I put this. Pathetic? :p But LotR fanboys who recently picked it up from the games/MMO/or just watching the movies really piss me off, when they believe themselves not only more learned in the lore of Middle-Earth and Arda than you, but than anyone in existance. I'm sure fans of other fantasy lore, Warhammer for example get this. An utter, and I use the word in confidence this is what they are without a shadow of a doubt, noob decides he/she is Illuvátars gift to geek kind. When you politly ask them to read some lore then come back and make your points, they get intolerably defensive as if youve insulted them personally. /sigh, Sorry I completely digress. I love the lore of Prof. Tolkien, I've recently let my grasp and knowledge slip somewhat, but I believe I'm fairly adept in understanding more than the common movie goer. By no means the greatest dont call me up on it please :p

I think its having your personal hobbies, that you do for the fun and social aspects of it, invaded by incoherent, incompetant fools who wouldnt know reason if it was a 2x4 situated in the vacinity of there anal sphincter (spelling?), that gets to us.

EDIT: Not sure if its been said yet but I'll go ahead an say it. DA VINCI CODE SYNDROME!

I am glad that I am the first to mention Star Wars, Just about everyone I know has seen the movies think they are a Goddamned expert of Star Wars and tell me facts in the movies I learned a long time ago (because I am a huge Star Wars nerd)

An addtional example, my cousin thinks he knows everything about every sport ever made, just because he can beat Americans at Soccer, Its pathetic

Yeah, that one hurts me deep down to. During highschool I studied ancient Greece, more so Sparta. I studied its women, lifestyle, games, art, wars, etc. It took a few assignmnets and I was only very average at it all but I still learnt a lot from it.

After watching the movie people started telling ME all this bullshit they saw from the movie as if they had a degree on the stuff. It was only ONE battle and it barely showed much of their lifestyle other then their beliefs about war. That's good and all, but come on, there's way more to them. I tried to tell someone how they lost to the Athenians and they refused to believe me saying how 'the two fought the Persians together.' Epic massive face palm!

I'm a bit of a computer hardware geek, and it really annoys me when friends think they know more about hardware than me just because they've got a job assembling computers for Dell or HP or whoever. Yay, you can follow instructions and put together fairly fool-proof systems, but that doesn't automatically qualify you to debate about differences between motherboards or whatever.

Also, people who have a little bit of experience with JavaScript or Flash and then think they can program just about anything they want.

Best part of 300 was bursting the bubble of every MANLY MAN (i.e. 15 year old hambeast) by informing them that real Spartans did, in fact, more regularly have sex with the men they fought alongside than with their wives.
yeah that's something they left out but is rather funny to bring up, a lot of old societies did that, greeks were the most notable but the romans did as well, probly why homosexuality was banned by the church to distance themselves from the old ways

they saying for that goes "women are for breeding and men are for pleasure"

My friend after playing Guitar Hero 3, so I gave him a go on my bass which I am learning, it sounded like a cat having intercourse with a squashed turtel.
he turned you bass into a set of bagpipes?

i haven't really met a lot of ppl who think they are expert after playing games. tho i remember watching some ppl complain about the h&k g36 in the true combat mod for quake 3 and saying how over powered it was, till someone pointed out it was under powered from the real thing

All people are like this more or less. I know I can find myself going out looking for actual history on the web after playing games. Because after the game I've developed an interest in the subject. Although I believe the sort of person you are talking about is the kind that just assumes things and as long as no one can prove him wrong he's right.

You can learn alot from games. Although you might wanna check your sources before you start babbling on about something you really don't have a clue about just because you wanna be the know-it-all. No offense intended towards anyone ofc.

Many D&D players love to act like they know something about archaic weaponry. The little chart in the book is full of simplifications (that's just good design) and misunderstandings (that's just poor research), but a lot of people seem to love using them as a basis for their pendatry.

Quickest ways to tell:
- Talk about weapons weighing dozens of pounds.
- Something about how a longsword is shorter than a bastard sword.
- Pretty much any mention of "studded leather."
- Hell, just about anyone who acts like hundreds of years' and dozens of cultures' worth of historical weapons can be organized into neat, tidy categories.

Fortunately, these folks are seldom as obsessive or numerous as katana fanatics.

Eh, I'm half in this catagory. But I check a lot of sources on gun info and stuff. You know basic browsing. Did you know the Spaz 12 a miltaryish shotgun used to be able to be imported into the U.S. Also did you know that Spas 12 production has stopped?

yeah.this is how things are for me too.

EDIT:eek:h,i should mention,i don't know this guy,and i'm glad i don't,becuase he's an idiot.
anyway,i went on gamefaqs to get an answer on something in the gta:sa board, when i see this topic that says"i know why people play this game."so i take a peek as to why people play this game, and what followed was a 7 paragraph long about why this man(?) was so gangster, and how he robs places on a daily basis, and that we are scared,so we play a game, yadda yadda yadda.
i'm just glad at what some people said back to the guy.
