I think that most of these "Hide behind rock-> Heal" are meant to represent the danger of being shot. Not actually being shot. I remember reading that somewhere. Maybe it was just that game...
Even though you spill blood when you get tagged... hummm...
Though I hate chasing health packs, so I don't mind it.
On topic though. Resident evil herbs are random.

Fallout 3. How in the hell does drinking out of an irradiated 200 year old toilet net you health points?
what about the whole 'eating weird sewer creatures' thing... infact what about any of the stuff in fallout 3? i mean that game is pretty weird, you can be hit by 3 rockets and you feel better after eating sewer creatues and washing it down with 200 year old biologically harmful poop...

The Mario games. You eat shrooms and flowers.
No thats just the High that Mario gets, makes him Think he's all better.

OT: Most games were not being shot at Heals you. Just doesnt make sense to me, At least in Other Healing Mechanics your doing something.

EDIT: Except in games where your mutant/special/whatever and you naturally regenerate, at least its explained then.

Why does this end thread? Hiding behind a rock is a lot less realistic than useing a health pack. Health pack have bandages and what not that would actually help. However waiting would just make it worse as you bleed out.

Perhaps the healing bacteria err, maybe radiation mutating healthiness no, err, I got nothing. This is probably the most ridiculous after the waiting to get health back.

Anything with regenerating health (unless the developers pulled an explanation out of their asses), I mean what's more realistic then standing there panting, then DING !full health!
Though, compared to having to pull bullets out of your flesh (while getting shot some more), I guess I'd opt for regeneration.

So is there any game that has a healing mechanic that DOES sound logical?

I would say world of warcraft has the strangest healing mechanics.

A major raid boss can slay the tank in as little as three seconds, so the healers must simply spam healing as fast as they can.

Well resistance has the whole whole regen health thing going on, but at least they explain it (mutated metabolism causes quickened healing). Never played a wolverine game but they could prob explain regen health in that as well... games with magic in them, healing spells make as much sense as fireball spells... Vampire the masquerade bloodlines, drinking blood to heal yourself is somewhat consistent with the lore of the franchise.

Let's face it, healing mechanics that do make sense would make for a pretty boring game. Get shot, have to call 911. Wait for ambulance to arrive. Arrive at hospital, undergo surgery. Lay around for a week or two. Finally get back ingame, only to have the same asshole shoot you again. Fuck.

As for weirdest... Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with Fallout 3. Doing things that should be harmful to you to heal you is rather odd.

The Resident Evil games.
You rip random coloured plants out of the ground, grind them up into a fine powder and snort it.
Or you spray some kind of chemical on yourself and your fully healed.

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth I wouldn't say had a realistic healing mechanic but was logical. You had to apply bandages, sutres(sp?) and splints to your various injured areas manually. It worked pretty well and made at least a bit of sense.

I think its kind of funny how beating a boss in Metal Gear Solid makes Snake just heal and get a bigger health meter.

Gulping truckloads of painkillers in the Max Payne games. How will not feeling pain help against a shotgun blast to the face ? The games are spectacular, don't get me wrong, but that has always bugged me.

On side note, the most realistic healing mechanic that I've seen in a game is the one in Call of Cthulhu, Dark Corners of the Earth. If an enemy shot you, you would have a broken bone, if he slashed at you with a knife, you would have a cut and so forth. Healing each ailment required a different tool in your medkit as in you couldn't cure poisons with a friggin' bandage.

EDIT: Fightarr types faster than me.

too human, valkyria comes down picks you up pats you on the head and sends you on your way, even though you got pounded in the face by a giant hammer, or pokemon droping you into a computer or flashy machine makes you all better . or eating a crunchy chick in fable 2

I have to agree that Fallout 3 is the end thread, once again with the 200 year old toilet thing. for SERIOUS.
