For instance if i did hitler, it would have to be on something like the nuremberg trials.
Hitler was dead before the trials, dude. Killed himself just before the war ended.

for something a bit more out there you could do the the invasion of cyprus by turkey in the 1970's. to date cyprus is the only country in the world with a capital split between two different countries and there is still ongoing settlement talks. also on top of this there was serious american and british and greece politicing going on in the background which led to this. if you want a start on this you could research up on makarious (i think)

also you could talk about the political mumourings that led up to this after britain granted cyprus its independance in the 1950's.

Sir Isaac Newton's Theory of gravity and how it was revolutionised by Einsein's Theory of general relativity.

EDIT: It was more disproved/updated than "revolutionised" our knowledge of gravity was revolutionised.

Anyway, it's a pretty interesting story, and worth looking into anyway. There're plenty of books that deal soley with this topic and many more that discuss it in detail.

The Spanish Armada of 1588. (The only reason that England isn't a Catholic province of Spain these days is that the whole thing was horribly mismanaged.)

Wasn't there a guy in WW2 who went into battle with a broadsword? That would be a unique projext if anything.
Yup, that was Jack Churchill.

The H.M.S. Glowworm and Lt-Cmdr Roope would be another interesting one. Not everyone is given a Victoria Cross on recommendation of the enemy commander.

How about Einstein's publications of 1905? It was one of the most significant years in the history of science. Or the eradication of smallpox in the late 70s? The extend of the space race between the US and USSR, and the batshit plans they had to take it even farther? As you can probably tell, I'm a bit biased toward scientific history...

Flirt with controversy, study the massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks and Kurds during WWI. To this day, the Turkish government refuses to recognise the slaughter of more the one million Armenians as genocide. They claim that these were just "casualties of war" and that the Turkish and Kurdish populations also suffered.

Don't let me bias you, make up your own mind.

The rise and fall of the USSR is a subject I personally love. Collapsed in 91 so youd be good to do that.
Or do the cold war in general. Facinating bit of history there.

So I'm doing my Leaving Cert this year (which is like the final year of high school for you Americans) and for history, I have to do a case study on something.

The case study can be done on pretty much anything, as long as it's befor 1993. It can be an event or a person or whatever, just has to have happened 18 or more years ago.

I've already got a few ideas on what to do it on, but I'd love to hear any suggestions. Also, if someone has done this or something similar befor, what/who did you do it on?
Now new infomation is out about it, thre Cuban Missile Crisis is great. Turns out the Soviets had nukes on Cuba before all the fuss even kicked up, they just kept up the chrade of 'oh we want to put nukes on cuba' to piss off the US. All the while going "mwuahaha we have had them on cuba all along!"

talk about how Douglas MacArthur screwed the pooch so hard while fighting the North Koreans that Eisenhower had to cuss him out then fire his ass

that was the best part of world history for me.

Franklin D Roosevelt & the great depression? Quite relavent, which Barbarossa probably isn't.
Not that there's anything wrong with older histories, but modern history is about analysing evidence, and you'll stuggle with pre-printing times.

Go miles back and do some ancient history, Greek or Rome or maybe something mad like Babylon. I did mine on the Greco-Persian War of 480-79 BC, the one with Thermopylae in it. Thats right. I studied 300 for an essay. By the way, Xerxes wasn't an 8-foot tall psychopath. He quite liked gardening.
Another good thing with medieval or older history is that you don't have swathes of evidence to sift through, unlike modern history. This can leave a lot of room for conjecture, but sometimes thats the most enjoyable part. You still need to put in the work though.

The Spanish Civil War 1936-1939. The Allies and the Soviets both failed to stand up against fascism because it would've meant supporting communism, however many private citizens (mainly from Europe and the USA) including George Orwell travelled to Spain and volunteered to fight for the communist cause because they thought it was the right thing to do.
