The only case study I ever did in High School was on Karl Marx. I got the only un-curved A in the class for that assignment.

Pick something that, you know, would interest -You- ? Will be much easier that way rather than trying to get other's to spam you with ideas you may have no clue about.

Nazi germanys 7th panzer division, when led by Rommel. Nicknamed the Ghost Division. There's a lot of stuff about Rommel. Also, Sabaton made a kickass song about them.

for something a bit more out there you could do the the invasion of cyprus by turkey in the 1970's. to date cyprus is the only country in the world with a capital split between two different countries and there is still ongoing settlement talks. also on top of this there was serious american and british and greece politicing going on in the background which led to this. if you want a start on this you could research up on makarious (i think)

also you could talk about the political mumourings that led up to this after britain granted cyprus its independance in the 1950's.
Ever heard of Berlin? Jerusalem was divided between 1948 -1967

talk about how Douglas MacArthur screwed the pooch so hard while fighting the North Koreans that Eisenhower had to cuss him out then fire his ass

that was the best part of world history for me.
It was Truman not Eisenhower

Senator McCarthy and McCarthyism as a whole. Damned interesting subject
Yes, even today's politics builds on it.

The whole of the Cold War is one hell of a subject. Be sure not to jump on the band wagon and call it an ideological conflict. Stalin made sure there was no ideology or thought left in the USSR, and the free market is not much of an ideology, but an excuse.

Three words:
Gaius. Julius. Caesar.

When he was 20-something he was kidnapped by pirates. He befriended the pirates. He joked with the pirates. He told the pirates that once his ransom was paid and he was released he'd come back, find them, and have them all crucified. His ransom was paid. They said their farewells. Then he came back, found the pirated, and had them fucking crucified.

I haven't found anything that catches a reader's attention quite like that.

Well, I guess the easiest case study would be on something really famous like World War 2 or something.

Actually, that's the best idea I can think of right now. Purely because you are Irish. Thing is, Ireland was supposed to be neutral in WW2, refusing to take part in the war on either side, and the Axis pretty much left you guys alone. However, I saw on 'Coast' the other week that Ireland actually secretly did a bunch of stuff that helped the Allies, particularly setting up hidden markers so that US and Canadian pilots would know that they were over Ireland and whereabouts they were, for navigation purposes, after crossing the Atlantic.

Stuff like that, focussing on how Ireland secretly helped the Allies in WW2? That would make a pretty good, fairly easy, and really interesting case study for you :D.
There's definately a surprising amount to be done on the Irish involvement (or lack there of depending on your opinion) in WW2. Theres the way Churchill tried to pressure De Valera into bringing Ireland into the war, mostly because of the ports that had been returned to Ireland just a few years ago which, had the British still owned them would have forced Ireland to enter the war. There were also the thousands of Irish citizens who enlisted into the British Army, one of whom, Paddy Mayne (I think) became possibly the most decorated British soldier in WW2. Hell, I think after the end of the War they found the plans for Hitlers planned invasion of Ireland; Operation Green... That man was original

Just go with whatever interests you and that you think you could write enough about. Good luck

Ooh, and there was the one time he tried to stage a nuclear coup on the U.S!

Now all our generals do is insult the president behind his back...

The effects of alcohol on history:

1. Greatest cause of death during the Middle Ages (accidents)
2. How people in the Middle Ages drank heroic amounts of it
3. Holy Friday- During the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution, the day when you were paid and therefore went out drinking.
4. Beer Hall Pitch- Hitler's attempt to getting people to reform Germany. He was thrown in jail and wrote Mein Kampf.
5. Prohibition and the rise of gang life.

Well in that case, personally i'd go for Weimar Republic time in German history. Great cultural revival after WW1 followed by Hitler's ride to power and study of how a seemingly normal country can just within years become obsessed with nazi ideology. Plus i'd get a chance of writing about Bertold Brecht and probably even add the the image painted in Cabaret musical.

The rise and fall of the USSR is a subject I personally love. Collapsed in 91 so youd be good to do that.
Or do the cold war in general. Facinating bit of history there.
I agree with Virus here... That's one of my favorite points in history. And since there is a game coming out about it, it'd be just right.
