Looking at how the media representation of celebrities is interesting and that along with many other studies has made my a tin foil hat wearing cynic because everything we know and love, hold dear and believe to has deeper or meritable gravitas is simply constructed to sell itself to you and devours what money it can from you wallet... oh yes celebrities.

I had a simliar project at the end of my A-levels and I did it on 'to what extent has the historical image of William Wallace been influenced by Scottish Nationalism?' That's the guy from Braveheart, it was a pretty interesting subject you find out a lot about the character and how he was almost completely different from how he was portayed in the film.

I did about the atomic bombs on Japan. Originally i wanted to do a piece on Captain Morgan, but there wasn't enough sources to compile an essay out of him.

Still, you could write a pretty darn cool essay on piracy in the 17th/18th centuries.

for something a bit more out there you could do the the invasion of cyprus by turkey in the 1970's. to date cyprus is the only country in the world with a capital split between two different countries and there is still ongoing settlement talks. also on top of this there was serious american and british and greece politicing going on in the background which led to this. if you want a start on this you could research up on makarious (i think)

also you could talk about the political mumourings that led up to this after britain granted cyprus its independance in the 1950's.
Ever heard of Berlin? Jerusalem was divided between 1948 -1967

talk about how Douglas MacArthur screwed the pooch so hard while fighting the North Koreans that Eisenhower had to cuss him out then fire his ass

that was the best part of world history for me.
It was Truman not Eisenhower
difference is that cyprus's capital is still divided between north and south. berlin was sorted a while back

Go play Assassins Creed 2, then do an expose on cool ass assassins in Renaissance Italy.

Also, pretty architecture.

EDIT: Seriously, templars and the various myths and legends about them would be a cool subject to go with.

You could do something about the great depression, and how it influenced the rise of Hitler to power.

Well, I guess the easiest case study would be on something really famous like World War 2 or something.

Actually, that's the best idea I can think of right now. Purely because you are Irish. Thing is, Ireland was supposed to be neutral in WW2, refusing to take part in the war on either side, and the Axis pretty much left you guys alone. However, I saw on 'Coast' the other week that Ireland actually secretly did a bunch of stuff that helped the Allies, particularly setting up hidden markers so that US and Canadian pilots would know that they were over Ireland and whereabouts they were, for navigation purposes, after crossing the Atlantic.

Stuff like that, focussing on how Ireland secretly helped the Allies in WW2? That would make a pretty good, fairly easy, and really interesting case study for you :D.
everybody is going to be doing that one dude >.<

I understand your troubles =) There's so much to choose from.
Do the crusades, or ancient Greek, or Rome, or Byzantine, or 1700 colonazation, or the 100-year war, or Frederick I Barbarossa, or Alexander the Great, or Archimedes, or Napoleon.

See how helpfull i was? ;)
Pick something with easy acces to historical sources

So I'm doing my Leaving Cert this year (which is like the final year of high school for you Americans) and for history, I have to do a case study on something.

The case study can be done on pretty much anything, as long as it's befor 1993. It can be an event or a person or whatever, just has to have happened 18 or more years ago.

I've already got a few ideas on what to do it on, but I'd love to hear any suggestions. Also, if someone has done this or something similar befor, what/who did you do it on?
lol, that's pretty much the WHOLE of history... EVER. Tough choice I'd say...

Do it about the Egyptians, or the Astecs. They were really interesting people. But make sure you do it on something you enjoy reading about.

Like at the moment in school, we are doing about Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Conan Doyle) and I sort of like that...

Your choice.

Ever since I read Animal Farm, I've been kind of interested in the formation and rise of the Soviet Union and the reign of Joseph Stalin and stuff like that, but that's just what interests me. With 65 million years of human existence, there has to be something over the course of history that you'd like to know more about.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Count of Monte Cristo is starting to get me into Napoleonic-era France, and it's pretty cool. Just think of your favourite historical fiction and do stuff about its era.
