My friends and I are starting to play D&D. the dungeon master has been playing for awhile and has instructed us to come up with a race, class, and backround. Heres the thing i have no idea what races and classes there are. so i would appreciate some help like post your fave race and character. If your really bored post your fav adventure you went on. also if you know a site that i could get a list of classes and races PM me it and i would be very grateful.

You're looking for the System Reference Document, which is available here [http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35].

Yes, it's completely legal.

I used to play as a soulknife. Do they still have those in the new edition? I haven't played in years.

Also before you pick a race/class you might want to think a bit about your character. Such as his/her backstory and personality.

Go on google, I can't remember the keywords but there's a quiz that determine what race / class / alignment your personality suits most.

There are also millions of random name & backstory generators about.

I usually go an elf or half elf as my favourite classes are either the ranger or the druid, I usually gear my druid towards skills less than spells so my magic's usually weak but I last longer so it all works out, saves money on getting limbs replaced which my usual DM is always quick to do even in the middle of climbing casle walls or going through swamps... I make it up to him by inventing odd weapons out of masterwork weapons that he then has to spend a good 10 mins writing up stats for :D

go download the character creator from the DnD website.
the trial version only lets you create up to level 3? or so. but itll let you see what you can do to make your level 1 character really well. and even has a handy character sheet you can print after.
yes its for 4th edition though. which i personally find to be far better than previous version.

Well in Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 (which use most of the D&D game mechanics) I generally play as Human, Elf, or Half-Elf for race, and usually a caster class like Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, or Wizard. But that's simply because playing a physical damaging class in NWN is mind-numbingly boring, so they would be more fun in the pen & paper version.
For a new player I'd recommend playing as a Cleric; they're easier to play while still being fun, because you can wear heavy armour and still cast powerful spells. Clerics are also the "healer" class so you have a lot of survivability.

If your playing 4th ed. just pick a human (simplest race) and choose your class based on how you want to play, tank = fighter/pally, heals = cleric, etc

A nice, searchable version can be found here [http://www.d20srd.org/]. It's also legal, and also 3.5.

I'm a big fan of wizards to be honest, in most fantasy games I play a human or elven mage (or Warrior-Mage) given the option. However 4E is truely borked especially in the magic system (IMO). I still play my preferred way (since it's what I like) but I would not consider it to be newbie friendly unless you have a HUGE tolerance for annoyance, boredom, and constantly being pwned competitively. :p

That's simply an opinion based on comparison.

If you've never played you should consider telling your GM this and ask for help.

Assuming you are playing in 3.x, don't be afraid to experiment. Sure a half-orc wizard is not a great choice for min-maxing, but half the fun is discovering a character you enjoy playing. Worst case scenario you arrange for an accident and have to reroll a new character.
