Just an idea before I log off for the day and cocoon myself... Yes I'm well aware it's kinda pathetic the Batman shooting thing is effecting me so deeply, but whatever. it is.

Can we as a community get a charity donation thing going that we could give to the victims? I don't want to run the damn thing, I wouldn't even know where to begin... It's just an idea, we all chip in whatever the hell we got and just give it to the people that were in that theater (and the one person that got shot in the adjacent one)? I don't want to be the one up on a soap box, moral fag or whatever you call it.

Sorta like what we did for the Extra Credits artist?

I don't know debate over it, someone get it running. I'd throw 20 dollars in, just saying.

I know this is a waste of typing but, please don't say it's stupid to because bad shit happens all the time to everyone in the world. Cause yeah, I know that. Worlds a deep dark horrible place. Don't care, I still think it be a cool thing if we did it anyway... Again stupid thing suggest over the internet but lets try to be human beings?

Just an idea. Someone, take charge.

EDIT: Kindly go here http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.382764-Reflecting-on-my-mess-from-yesterday-Charity-idea-and-what-not

If you can figure out how to donate through the official channels, I'd be willing to send some money.

Not much, mind. I kinda need it for food, but $10 or so I can spare.

I think it's a nice idea, and I think it's great when people take a genuine interest in helping others, so don't apologise for wanting to help!

I will probably get flamed for this but-

Do you feel this strongly because it was at a Batman film and you like Batman or do you genuinely feel an emotional attachment and want to go out of your way for the victims? Because I remember the 7/7 bombings - nobody wanted to set up a fund and I remember when Raul Moat shot that policeman point blank in the face and all he got was a medal. Nobody wanted to set up a trust fund on other websites.

If somebody sets this up I will be more than happy to donate. I am just curious if we're only donating here because it's part of a geeky subculture or if we'll keep something going. Not just to victims of this shooting but any victims of gun crime. I understand hospital bills are ridiculously expensive in America.

Look this is going to sound stupid as all hell, and I acknowledge that going in, but here was a group of people that just wanted to see a movie. They wanted to see a Superhero take on the bad guy and what not.

And, again, I don't mean this in the material sense.... Cause like yeah, they will never be with their families or continue to live full happy lives and thats sad... But I think it's all the more crueler that they went to The Dark Knight Rises expecting to see that flick and 12 of them now will never EVER get the chance to. I found that so incredibly fucking cruel....

...Than I found out a six year old died.

Six year old died because it wanted to see Batman. My fucking childhood hero, and more than likely heres a person IN THEIR FUCKING CHILDHOOD wanting to see their hero.

Again, it's stupid. Theres a fucking genocides happening in our world. I acknowledge that. Still I'd like to see if we could pool our money together and maybe try to compensate this small group of innocent people for being forced to have a really fucking bad day. No money won't bring back the dead, undo time and remove the mental scars... but lets do it anyway.

If a fucking pyschopath can be selfish enough to try to ruin a movie these people cared so much about to see a midnight premier, why can't we be selfless enough to give a gift?

Seriously, can't someone set this up? The Escapist even?

It is not stupid at all.

You said yourself Batman is your childhood hero and it is insanely cruel that somebody decided to walk in there and start shooting. Why? We will probably never know why - a normal functioning member of society would never understand.

My nephews are the biggest Batman fans I have ever known. At my brother's wedding Jacque kept saying he was Bruce Wayne in his suit and then suddenly he disappeared and returned in his Batman get up. He wants to see this film and it would break my heart if he had been a member of this audience.

I honestly think you should be the one to set this up as you seem to be the one who feels the most passionately about this. Contact the local paper, set up a paypal donation scheme and see the results flood in.

What have you got to lose? You have the heart and now go for the drive - people will donate.

I mean, it is stupid. Grand scheme of things it's stupid, and generally I'm not the type of person that gets rocked by such things but this clearly has rocked me in a big bad way.

Maybe... I don't know, I'm not really qualified in anyway to do it and I also don't want to be *That guy* asking people to put in their hard earn dollars like it's something super important. Would need a day or two to think about it, only if someone more proper doesn't rise up.

You've got the idea and you've already asked us to donate so that's two out of three.
Batman's the one who is always rambling on about not letting fear hold you back. Anyway, before I sound too preachy I shall leave you to it. If this kicks off let me know and I'll throw in a couple of quid.

Your username makes me think that this feels like a sincere effort, considering the fact you've stated the opposition most people would feel towards it.

Doing a quick search on Google, I found that Someone [http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/broward/blog/2012/07/sheriff_plans_to_go_ahead_with.html] is trying to do what you are suggesting, but your story kind of hit me a bit too.

I'm not Sentimentally tied to Batman or most anything, truly I'm not. That being said, your story makes me want to do the same thing too. I'm doing research on Kickstarter, but I have no idea how to start anything with that. However, I'm looking. Maybe I can find something else to donate through.

Still, this seems like an honest and kind effort. I can't say I wouldn't throw in something too, if I can.

...Considering more than one of you have stated as such.... I gotta think about when my mind is clear, cause full disclosure I started drinking after I made this thread, and I have no idea how to do it. Feeling is genuine though.

I could whip up a T-Shirt to sell through Cafe Press to sell and promise I'd give any profits to the families, but all I would have is my balls and my word and that obviously don't mean much over the internet.

Again, I'll think about it, but in full disclosure I really don't want the burden to rest on me. I don't think I'd be the right guy for the job.

To be honest, I don't know what good money's going to do. The survivors are probably incredibly traumatised, I don't really know how money'll help that.

It's a nice thought though.

It was an awful event yes, but do I think survivors and families of victims require charity? No, the idea seems a bit ridiculous if I'm being Frank. There is a reason criminals are ordered to pay out vast sums of money, it goes to the victims.

If you want to donate money to charity then it's a truly noble thing, but it seems a little more useful to donate to charities that help people who don't stand to claim lots of money in compensation.

Oh it won't help, really, I know that.

Hey your daughters dead! but heres a bag of money to make it better! >.> I'm not that dense.

Just.... dunno, random guy can show up at a movie theater to try and kill you what can't random people want to give you something good? Maybe you're right and it's pointless. I only made the thread to get a feel for peoples opinions.

That's not pathetic at all; it's human. I'm disturbed you feel ashamed for showing empathy. What kind of society is this we live in :(

Ehh... I doubt the families need money.

Send it to the third word if you really want to give.

Kool idea . I won't put up any money though . Priorities and stuff . Not to belittle the tragedy . But i rather give money for people that are alive and dying ( starving children and such ) than for people who are past away .

It wouldn't surprise me that this works though , people here at the escapist like to feel morally above the rest of the world.

A whole lot of people were injured and considering the insane hospital bills (+400 bucks for an ambulance) I'm sure a-lot of people are gonna need help. If we could assure that the money is going to those who need it most, that'd be be fantastic!

Also, helping people cover funeral costs would be nice, which can easily be over a grand depending on where you live.

I'm sure something on one of the crowd-funding sites will pop up soon.

Indiegogo is what you are looking for. The guy who is raising money for that harassed bus monitor used that and is using it for something else too. If you want to try then go for it but I have no idea how you are going to get the money to them.
