Hey, who's this guy...? Oh, it's fucking DANTE. What do you reckon about the re-design?

My first reaction to the picture was pretty much the same as a lot of people here "What did they do?". Then I started analyzing it, and noticed the white spot on his hairs, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be lighting or intended, but with the OP's edits, it kinda goes along with the possibility I saw of him, 'unlocking' his latent half demon powers as he slowly changes into the Dante we know. Since in that specific time Vergil isn't dead yet, I suspect we'll see him, even why they hate each other so much, probably related to when they discovered their heritage or something. Anyway, I think "we"(...I) need to stop jumping the gun and wait for actual gameplay or a lot more info to judge a game. Just hopes I don't regret giving some a chance.

It's probably his look in the beginning of the game and as things start happening, he will have the trademark white hair by the end. I'm actually kind of anxious to see how this new twist works out.

I like it (if its a reboot)
If the game is a reboot of DMC it could work, I don't hate the look but theres no way that he grows into Dante as we know him. But if they are reinventing Dante I think a new look is a good thing. he seems to have an attitude that matches the old Dante, but how much do you wanna bet that this game get shit about the smoking.

See ,one fear I have is that they'll try going in a direction that just ends up being more "edgy" then before. Like "oh, this is a grittier! scuzzier Dante! He smokes! he's seen the real s**t man! He's freekin mental!" cause ya know, that aint Dante, and you'd be better off just re-naming the character then :p

I don't think they will bring up Virgil. Part of a re-boot is about not having to deal with old baggage from the past games. Virgil ROCKED in DMC3, but really, he's been delt with. That whole story has pretty much been told.

I'm over it. Younger Dante can look however the hell he wants. As long as by the end of the game (hell even if it's just in the final cutscene) he has his trenchcoat, Rebellion and his hair is white I'm completely on board with this. DMC can show his rise to what he is in Devil May Cry 3.

In the end the trailer still retains the style that makes me love DMC, what else can I ask for?

My first DMC game was the third one and I LOVED IT. Played some of the fourth and most of the first game. "just so people know where I'm coming from"

-I was very shocked to see the new design, and the trailer has be a little tweaked as well. HOWEVER, it looks like they are trying to give him a more "punk rock" kind of feel, which would actually couple nicely with the game play you want in a DMC game. I'm not going to shun this game, though I will be somewhat cautious of it. As much as I loved what I'd played of DMC, I'm pretty sure the general consensus of the 4th one was somewhat "meh". The new art direction "again, urban punk rock what have you" could actually work pretty well. We will just have to wait and see. For those who haven't seen the trailer, check it out as this image from the OP is somewhat BEGGING for fan bombardment, I really don't see why they chose to use it.
You're one of the few people who I feel is getting the vibe they're sending out here. I agree completely. There's a punk rock quality to Dante in this (the song in the trailer helped convey this vibe too), sort of a young Darby Crash. Maybe a slightly post-mortem Darby Crash.

I just don't see the emo-twilight vampire guy everybody is referring to. Everybody with black hair is emo these days then?

I think it gives a more realistic look into his past. I kinda want to know his back story. Devil may cry has never been a duke nukem game to me where all you do is kickass and chew bubblegum. I like the story in the games ans flawed (and sometime convoluted) as they me so i welcome the new perspective. Did the fact that Solid Snake was old in the last metal gear subtract from the game play? No! the game was great and enjoyable despite it's flaws. Hell i even welcome a young nero as well. All of your bloody bitching and moaning is just gonna increase the popularity anyway and all you whinners are still goning to go and play the game like those twilight fangirl-twits.

His hairs not even the right color.
I think he didn't always have white hair.
I'm pretty sure he had it in all 4 games
I meant in his younger years. Not just through the games. Dante is, what, 18 in this game? White hair is a demonic trait, but being half-human he didn't always have white hair.

Edit: If you pause the trailer at 00:59, you can see his white hairs coming through.
Well. the only two things that has proof of the color of his air at a young age is either this terrible reboot or the Anime/Magna. You see a picture of dante when he was a kid and his hair was still pure white. the anime/Magna is more faithful so am gonna go with it.

Looks to be an interesting reboot. Though to be honest I entered into the Devil May Cry franchise rather late with number 4 so I'm probably the kind of person this game is aimed at :p

You bring up a very good point, I'll guess we'll see when it actually is released.

A more or less side note, since we get a new DMC coming up, that might explain the presence of Dante, and Trish, not sure why buy why not, in the Marvel vs Capcom roster, or it's just a plain coincidence.
(small edit for what it's worth, my "not sure why but why not" refer to Trish, though on second thought, for the rest of the cast, somewhat limited choices)

Well, if I might be so bold, I think part of it is everyone is very eager to make a twilight joke these days, beyond that, we are all afraid of the the idea of ANYTHING we've grown-up thinking was awesome, suddenly turning into whats "pop and hip with the kids"

Here's one of the dev's responses on the Capcom forums:

'Taking much loved franchises and trying to transform and update them while passing the opportunity for new teams to innovate and breathe new life into them is always a risky thing. But just as we feel Blue Castle, in deep collaboration with Capcom Japan has captured the essence of Dead Rising in DR2, and what's more greatly improved upon it, we believe a similar collaborative relationship with Ninja Theory will arrive at an improved game for the DMC series.

I understand the skepticism, but I think in the long run, you're all going to be surprised. In any event, I'm loving the passion with which folks are discussing our announcements last night. That was indeed, the desired effect and I hope you'll give us enough benefit of the doubt long enough to some day try the game and see what we're talking about.'

The bits that caught my eye is that 'in the long run', they're going to 'surprise us', and that this response was 'the desired effect'.

I'll be holding my breath, more with cautiousness than anything else. Let's see what they can 'surprise' us with.

I think we can all agree that this is a massive freaking risk on Capcom's part.

They say "fuck you fans" because they hope to appeal to a wider audience of players who never heard of the series. Well, as a fan I say fuck you too Capcom. I'm not buying this...whatever this is. I also hope this game turns out to be rubbish because you should think about loyal fans first. This pissed off a lot of fans for all the right reasons.

There is a tiny bit of hope that the person in the trailer is just some guy who was trained to think that he's Dante, and that actual Dante is still a normal half-demon.

I'm starting to feel more "kind-hearted" towards the idea now, still kind of iffy, but I hope that Capcom and Ninja Theory can pull it off right.

Though I did like this little addition someone posted up on the DmC forums at Capcom Unity:

From what I Saw the anime wasn't particularly faithful. Either way, I wont be bent of of shape if the "expertly crafted franchise" suddenly re-cons some stuff.

I think you (and some other folks) are being a little childish about this.

This isn't a fuck you to fans. In fact, some of the fans sound like they're telling Capcom to fuck off, in that they (Capcom) somehow don't have the creative right or prerogative to change aspects of one of their series'.

If I had a nickle for how many times fans of something felt betrayed at the slightest evolution update or change of the object of their fandom (an example: ZOMG black hair instead of white hair), I'd be a millionaire.
