Hey, who's this guy...? Oh, it's fucking DANTE. What do you reckon about the re-design?

Dante's 6'2"? Yes, I actually noticed the height. Also, isn't Dante supposed to have white hair? And be wearing something closer to a red trench coat? Y'know, the classic image that even someone who's never played a Devil May Cry game recognizes?
Dante isn't supposed to be anything. He's a character, subject to the whims of his creators. If they want to reboot him I say good. Little sick of the 80's hair metal star of DMC1-4.
Yeah, but when you have an easily recognizable character like that, changing it is going to get a lot of negative reactions, and doesn't really make sense. It'd be like having a goth Mario, except less absurd and amusing.

I don't like his silhouette, his clothes, hair plus he comes off as a smoking advertisement, it just doesn't add anything to his character. I'm not sure who they are aiming at because I doubt he appeals to younger fans either.

Apart he looks really clumsy in the gun play parts of the preview, Tentacle sword action looks really unconvincing even though it's totally scripted atm.

Very meh.
It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thought the gunplay didn't look right. At all. It really does look like he's trying to be cool, which isn't what Dante does, damnit.
Sounds like you may have forgotten the cinema at the beginning of DMC3 then.
I haven't. What's your point? That he was trying to look cool? I don't see it that way. Yeah, the director was trying to make him look cool; that goes without saying. But Dante? No. That was Dante being Dante. That was very natural to his character.
Then I guess I'm really not seeing the difference between old Dante looking cool and new Dante looking cool. To me it just comes off as your personal bias against the new character design. What exactly tells you this guys merely TRYING to look cool, as opposed to old Dante? Other than the fact that you hate his new hair style?

The thing is, most people(myself included) wanted DMC5, not a reboot..this is going way too far, and a bit too different, even from a reboot prespective. That is why people are angry.
No, most people are angry because he has black hair and I quote "looks like an emo". It's that shallow.
Bullshit. If his character was shown to be at least moderately consistent with his personification in the rest of the series (2 not withstanding), then I'd forgive the appearance. If he was still the smartass-grinning, wise-cracking, fun-loving bundle of awesomesauce, I'd dislike the new appearance, but roll with it as the character would ultimately be the same.

Please stop talking out your ass and realize that most of us don't only have a problem with his appearance. That just happens to be the ribbon on the package.
I'm sorry, I guess reading through every goddamned page of this thread somehow gave me the idea that the main problem with the character is that he "looks like an emo and/or lesbian and/or sparkly vampire". I don't know where I got that idea. Crazy.

And if you've watched the trailer you'd see that yes, his personality is the same as it's always been.

Owch. The lesbian cut is what makes it terrible. PLus he's too skinny and not tough looking at all. Not to sound cliche but he looks like any emo kid.

Looks like a pretty boy actor trying to be a badass by going the generic "look how tough I am cause I got beat-up and can scowl" route. "Grrr, I'm totally fierce... I am... anyone?... I'm so alone."

This new Dante looks like Hilary Swank.

Devil May Cry or Boys Don't Cry?
A Winner is you!

Anyways, I really don't think I could see Tomoyasu Hotei up there doing anything but making the Kill Bill theme song, and listening to MCR in the corner.

I mean, come on, Hilary Swank up there can't have any relation to this guy:

Actually to contradict your theory about Dantes hair, there's a painting in DMC for PS2 where you see two white haired babies.

It's just Ninja theory trying to re-write what worked really well for 3 games which has never really been a great idea. But seeing how capcom fired the guy who made DMC, Okami and Joe I guess they needed someone else.

I just hope they change Dantes whiny emo look before I find the guy who did this and punch him in the nuts for it.

It's funny how everyone calling him emo and yet you are the one who are crying and bitching.
He's NOT an emo.
It's not necessarily that he is emo, so much as he happens to look the part.

To confirm whether or not he's emo, we'd have to know about his personality, and all we know about that at this point is that (1)he's no longer magnificently arrogant, and (2)he's trying too hard to be cool. Actually, we only know the first part. The second is speculation.
Trying too hard to be cool? how? is it the cigarette thing? please explain.
We still doesn't know if he is arrogant or not, we'll have to see.
Before I get to the "trying to be cool" thing, I'll handle the second question. I didn't say that he isn't arrogant any more, just that he's not magnificently so. In the other games (Devil May Cry 2 does not exist), all it took was looking at him to know he thought he was hot shit. He may be very arrogant in this; we don't know he isn't. However, what is certain is that he's no longer the magnificent bastard of games past.

As for the second, the cigarette plays a part, but it isn't the biggest problem. The way he handles it reminds me tremendously of all the white trash poser teenagers I'd see around cities, and bear in mind that I grew up in one of the most southern states of the U.S., so I've seen some white trash. Hell, I lived not too far away from a trailer park.

His hair and facial expressions makes him look like a scene kid with a chip on his shoulder, trying to look tough but failing miserably because he looks like a damned scene kid. His clothes don't help either, foregoing the seemingly custom-made style-heavy clothing for a dirty white undershirt and a bulky black coat with red extensions that are way too big. The protagonists in the Crow sequels dressed with more dignity than this.

His movements also seemed forced, particularly in the gunplay scene. His movements were unnatural and choppy, like he was intentionally trying to impress onlookers, whereas in the past, he performed crazy stunts with such grace and bravado that it seemed natural, like he was just playing with his enemies for the lulz. This guy just looks like he's trying, and trying to look cool always looks stupid.

Now, I'm not asking you to agree with me, but I'm hoping you'll see where I'm coming from. I really don't like the direction they've taken with Dante, and I sincerely hope they make something closer to home.

Admittedly, the post you responded to really didn't come out right. You said everyone was getting their panties in a twist because of a hairstyle. I meant to deny that and state that it wasn't necessarily his appearance itself, but rather the personality traits of which it is indicative. As for the difference in personality, I've already explained that, as well as the trying to be cool argument.

So, in essence.

WAAAAAAHHHHH?

I mean, seriously, he looks like he should at 18-19. Did you really think his demon powers had kicked in at this point?

And at least now he looks less anime-ish.

Fucking dig it! DMC was hands down my favourite PS2 game. Number 2 was not bad, but thats where it stops. I'm excited to see what they can do with this material. Here's to hoping they bring back the feeling of the first game, and not another piece of trash like number 4.

I bet he cuts himself in the bathroom, and cries in his pillow every night because none of the girls at Limbo High even know he EXISTS, despite his edgy male make-up! Then he listens to that My Chemical Romance song that is TOTALLY ABOUT HIM and lets his window open so the girl next door can listen and realize he's totally cool. Someday she'll dump that prick Adam and realize he's nothing more than a bully, and come running to his open arms, because he's sensitive, not like Adam, that jock bully. Maybe he'll even show her the song lyrics that he wrote about them meeting in Hell and then breaking free because of the strength of their love. Shit, that's totally going on Facebook.
Best thing I've read the whole day. Thank you.

Personally i think Dante looked better in the other 4 games, his appearance and wise cracks kinda set him apart from other characters. He just seemed so much more awesome :D
I think the main problem is that for me, DMC was about stylish combat and the devil trigger. DMC3 (prequel) did well because you didn't get devil trigger until about 1/2 way through, if this reboot is a prequel to dmc3, it won't have devil trigger which i'm kinda worried will make it more like Ninja Gaiden. Jus my opinion tho.

How do you guys think they'll do it?

Oooo... I like it. I wasn't sure from the photo you gave (it makes him look like a real punk) but after watching the trailer, I'm on board with this decision. I'm always approving of video game characters coming out of their comfort zones to try new looks. And it makes sense since this is younger Dante. Not sure how this is a "western" look, I could just as easily see any Japanese guy wearing this style.

Gasp, they're trying something new! BOYCOTT! BURN THE WITCH! We'll never accept your slightly changed version of a shallow character that we like!

Oh Lord. What is this I don't even!!

And yet, having just watched the trailer I'd say the standard enemy design is even worse. Looks like something more at home in a Silent Hill game... what happened to the days of the stylish, blade-swinging marionettes?

Environment is fine, though. A nice change from the over-used warped gothic settings.

... Eh, who am I kidding. I already know I'm gonna wind up at least renting it.

Since it is a series reboot, they can shove devil trigger in there. Maybe he gains it and busts out of the institute?

yea that's a good call, I didn't think of that xD also offers a chance for some more character development and back story.

maybe a fresh start isn't such a bad thing after trying to cram everything from the first 3 in dmc4 :S

At first I was against it (screenshots DID look pretty lame), but I've officially been converted after watching the trailer.

Shit looks hawt.
