I disagree with everyone that just days "its what you listen to, I listen to different stuff, it doesn't affect me". I just see that as saying "Lets not discuss this subject!". Opinions should be evaluated and challenged or else noone would ever do anything differently. Whenever someone plays the subjective card, its basically telling everyone to shut up.
I don't believe that art is subjective anyway, otherwise you would have to concede that The Beatles/Bob Dylan/Mozart have no more artistic merit than BrokenCYDE or the Black Eyed Peas. Each genre has a time, a place, a target audience and different criteria for assessment, but that doesn't mean that you cannot discuss the relative merits of different artists within the genre.

I understand fully, I love a lot of mainstream music, but then again I also listen to quite a few extremely obscure bands and listen to quite nearly every genre of music that exists, with one exception, but music is music and there are sparkling gems of greatness within every genre and comparing them is like comparing which fruit tastes the best, its different, which is good. Music with substance is good for when you really need music it can portray complex moods and emotions which is enjoyable for the listener, but sometimes you just want to dance around like an idiot and have fun. Its like the difference in going to a symphony and a rave.

The reason there is so much hatred and fanatic music elitism is because being a music elitist is one of the few elitisms that requires no real talent or effort to be part of said elite, so people who aren't special latch onto to it in order to look good and look down on those who don't bother with that bullshit.

I can enjoy a good pop song, but as others have said, don't expect music snobs to stop mocking you because you are too lazy to find less popular kinds of music.

Well, just listen to Lady Gaga's lyrics and you may understand why people (including myself) hate her. Most of her songs exploit the average persons drive for sex. If a movie's poster had a giant pair of tits on it I would be just as cautious about it as I am with her music. Pop in general seem to do this.

This is ok, but music that talks about real issues is bad, evil, satanic, angry, etc. But no, a person can be sexist, racist, and exploitative all they want and they'll make ten shitloads of money doing it.

tbh, everyones opinion is right. It doesnt mean you should relent to someone elses opinion, or even conform. a lot of people say listening to the Charts' stuff means you conform, and, as pointed out, are sheep. that could be said about anyone. No. Wether you like it or not, someones opinion WILL differ to yours. Its the same with everyone. No. You're looking at this the wrong way. Most of us don't like a song because nobody knows it, we like it because it's not shit, and because the people that make the music can actually play/sing/gargle/yodel/communicate with aliens worth a damn. To me, R&B (modern, that is), rap and synthpop is *not* music, no matter how 'catchy' it may be. Autotune also sucks. It's the lazy way to make a hit, and that just pisses me off. I could deal with this kind of music if it sounded like they put even the tiniest bit of effort into it, but with every song going, 'yeah, something about bitches, hos and shit, word' or some shit and being sold by half-naked chicks prancing about on a music video whilst some fat guy that can't even rap talks his way through a 'song'... that is why I hate your kind of music. However, go ahead and listen to it if you really like that kind of shit, but don't try and play it near me.

So why do I like popular music? Well partly because finding music that isn't popular requires effort and I really can't be arsed, while popular music is readily available on the radio and internet without me having to scope things out. And partly because everytime I've been recommended to music by some obscure artist I've hardly ever liked it. (this isn't a cue for everyone to throw their favorite songs at me, please, that isn't the point of this thread and I don't need 'converting') However, mainstream songs generally appeal to me; and though there is some shit out there I enjoy a lot of it.

Well there's a point. It's called mainstream for a reason, it's a mix of what's popular with the masses. So of course you'll love it if you can't be arsed to look for yourself. And you're right, there is a lot of shit out there. Wading through mainstream music to find one jem, is the same as wading through artists to find one you love. Mainstream just does all that work for you and throws you what the 'general public' like.

One thing I do dislike about my preferred genres is a lack of much of a decent message in the song (it's not always shit messages though as some people would have you believe, just most of the time it is) However, the music itself is more important to me, and I'd prefer to have a song that sticks in my mind and is 'infectious'.

Well STD's are infectious and all the kids are catching them too, I'm seeing a trend here.

Ok, now I've had my little gigggle at the choice of words. Yes, that is the general idea. A lot of people however take distaste in the manufactured feel that comes from mainstream pop. The fine line between an indie song on the charts and one by an obscure artist, is who wrote the song and the music? I don't know how to explain it that well.

But this doesn't make me thick, it just means that music means something different to me than to you people. While to some, every song must be a masterpiece that gives us emotion, to me music only has to be distraction to relax or dance to. And I'm sorry, but, people like me happen to be the majority, and we're not all thick.

Whilst you are quite correct, the majority is not always right. And that is what mainstream music is there for, it's just mindless music with a catchy beat to get you dancing. Whereas others like to look deeper into the music for emotional release, enjoyment and musing.

The reason I posted this thread is perhaps half because I wanted to rant, but also because I really want this judgmental attitude to stop.

Well to be honest, it's really not going to stop. And you've pretty much just come on here and judged a good portion of us. You're right, we all have different preferences when it comes to music. So quit yapping, pipe down cause you're in the minorities territory now. We have to suffer when we're dweilling the surface, ears bleeding as Lady Ga Ga, Cheryl Cole, Tinchy Styder etc. blares out from all direction.

i would have to agree with those who say main stream music is not as good, but most people are not willing to dig deep enough to find non main stream music. personally i also jump from genre to genre depending on my mood. one thing i want to make aware is that not enough people make an effort to look for non mainstream music. unfortunetly i have to download most of my music from www.notgonnafacilitatepiracy.com and i feel bad about that because i have no fucking clue where to buy the music.

OT: That's all well and fine, but mainstream? Seriously? My suggestion to you is try being a bit more open minded and giving other genres besides "Rich Whore Warbling" and "Shoot Whores With Guns".

I for one am a gamer and I listen to nearly every kind of music out there except for most of the stuff found on the radio. Country and Polka are pretty much the only genres I actually claim to hate.

I just listen to whatever is good. Usually, "mainstream" doesn't fit the bill since most mainstream is rap and R&B. Rap was good, some rap is still good, but I can't stand R&B. I don't care if Beyonce sings extremely good. The only song I like is "If I were a Boy".

Now, Lady Gaga? She's briliant. Finally something new. I love her music and she's nice to look at, too.

I used to despise anything "popular". And by "popular" I mean anything that's not rock music. I was an idiot. Now I'm getting older, and I have a job where the radio is on, I'm actually exposed to mainstream, chart music, and I actually like a lot of the songs that are played. I don't know how it happened. I find myself liking Black Eyed Peas, Pixie Lott, Lady Gaga and that new Kesha girl. But I agree, their songs very rarely have deep meaning, they just sound good and catchy.
But even if I still did hate anything mainstream, I wouldn't judge anyone by what music they listen to. That's ridiculous.
