I cannot stand mainstream music but that doesn't matter since I'm not in the targeted audience. Most singers tend to target people in their early teens since teens are the ones that are most likely going to visit their concerts and buy their albums.

Lady Gaga, Jonas Brothers, Britney Spears, most rap singers, Tokio Hotel, any boyband/girlband and so on and so forth are all examples of musicians targeting a "younger" audience since doing so almost guarantees success.

Acctually the majority of people (at least in "western civilisation" anyway) are complete fucking dumbasses. So chances are... yes you all are quite thick.

How do I know this? because the fucking crazy frog and Bob the builder where number 1 in the charts, that's how.

There's quite alot of things wrong with Pop music.
The first thing being the reason I just gave.
The second being that most of it is just so much of a copy of every other song in the charts that really it's impossible to tell who wrote that first pop song that everyone else coppied.
Hardly any Pop "stars" write there own music, thus not being musicians as that is halve of the point.
There's nothing in the songs, you could write an entire pop album in about a day.

Also dance/hip hop/electronic/whatever it was you said it's all the fucking same genre so it doesnt matter... hmm where to start.
Well all of the reasons above apply to "dance" music which in itself is a pretty stupid name for the genre considering listners dont really "dance" they just jump up and down to it. Anyway, listen to a "dance" track... try tapping the beat out. Now listen to another "dance" track... try tapping the beat out. Continue to repeat this process untill it has been driven into your thick skull that it is infact the EXACT same beat throughout probably the entire "album". I think the acctual figures is that 90% of all "dance" "songs" have the exact same beat/tempo/time signature.
It also takes no talent WHATSOEVER to make.
It's not music... there are no instraments involved in making it. It has more relation to a spread sheet made on excel than to music because of this point.

Anyway, what the fuck are you moaning about? everyone gets stereo-typed into differant groups because of the music they listen to. What's the matter, are you poor poor mainstreem people not used to RECEIVING the abuse rather than GIVING it. awwww poor you. Fucking live with it, big deal... people hate your music. Mainstream fuck's have been hating our music for years.

Like whatever you want to like; play whatever you want to play.
It doesn't matter what people think of the music you're listening to, people are always going to judge you. The most you can do is tune it out (that's what I do). I find it stupid to judge someone on their taste in music or way of dressing.

I hardly listen to anything besides sub-genres of metal and, yes, I get judged for that sometimes, but the person judging doesn't have to like it and I could care less if he/she does. My taste. Not theirs. They can say all they want but it won't change.

I have no opinion about what other people listen to, as long as you don't try to mess with what i do then fill your mainstream boots.

I dabble in the mainstreamfrom time to time, but only to grasp any gems that i deem quirky enough to be listenable.

Some Pop songs are okay, but a lot of the music thats popular I tend to hate because I just think its so false.
I mean, using technology to produce music is fine, (Personally I love a lot of the music on OCRemix, and most of that is produced using audio samples) making music that has a synthetic feel is okay, but the music my older brother worships just goes too far.

Autotune should be considered a musical sin! Not only does it grate on the ears, but it gives me a horrible "uncanny valley" feeling.

And the backing music seems so samey too. Its like the modern music has become more about the looks, (ironic I know!), and not about the music itself.

Well, just listen to Lady Gaga's lyrics and you may understand why people (including myself) hate her. Most of her songs exploit the average persons drive for sex. If a movie's poster had a giant pair of tits on it I would be just as cautious about it as I am with her music. Pop in general seem to do this.
I'd call that business sense, you can't deny that she's arty, and if you check out her stuff BEFORE she created the whole Lady Gaga persona, she's definitely musically talented. I like to research the people im a-hatin' on.

The main gripe I have with pop, is that it's getting VERY hard to separate genuine artists from manufactured 72BPM electrorockpopn' B.

Disney, I'm looking at you.

Man, I really need to make a note of your screen name or something... I keep on seeing you saying "Hilltops rock", getting really excited because there's another Hilltops fan on here, then realising it was me posting this that introduced you to them...

Keep spreading the good word mate :p Have you heard their new album yet?
I have no clue if ive heard of their new album, sinc ei dont buy albums. i go on youtube and create playlists and stuff, i mean the only album name that instantly comes to mind is State Of The Art, which is an amazing album.

But legit, Hilltop Hoods is one of my favorite band, and to be a favorite of mine i have to like literaly 90% of your stuff, and i like 100% of what ive heard from these guys.

I don't really mind what people listen to, I would rather have a world of different people than a world full clones.

You mentioned messages in pop music, the only message I hear in pop music is love, I would bet 95% of pop songs are about love.

Theres only one type of music I hate with a passion, dance music, same as pop music but somebody turned the bass up to 11 (cookie for the reference), added more beats and maybe increase the tempo.

I hate most rap 'cos it's the same asinine messages in every song, it's either "im the greatest rapper ever and everybody not from the same area as me is total shit", "I have a fast car, a big house and loads of cash (from dealing drugs)" or "I treat women like crap and they love it".

I say I hate most of it 'cos songs like mosh by eminem are about real things, in this case it's the about the war in Iraq or Stan (again by eminem) which is about a fan going of the deep end (no pun intended) and killing himself and his pregnant girlfriend.

As long as I am not forced to listen to it, I couldn't care less what any body else listens to.

Mainstream music IMO is just people who want money. They don't want to make music, they want make money so they make their typical boring music (why take a chance at something new when you know what's popular?)that they may not even like themselves, and make sure that they market it correctly so it gets super popular.

YOUR OPINION IS WRONG!

I'm not going to say that you're not allowed to like these things. Although after hearing that you actually enjoy listening to Lady GaGa, I'm afraid you're wither a masochist or I can't respect you. That bi-gendered thing may be the worst disaster to ever happen to music.
Sorry to prove you wrong but:

Yeah, she's got no talent at all and is, genuinely, just a weird person.

I hate pop music.

Mods, please tell me if you want me to take out the picture all together.

I think Sturgeon's Law definitely applies in this situation: 90% of everything is crap.

I studied classical piano and pop organ for many years. I played clarinet in marching bands for years as well, and played keyboards for a group that was doing 1940s big band songs. I also taught myself bass, mostly by playing along with Rush, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Tool. And I picked up some guitar too. I had a friend in high school who was trying to write house, Euro and freestyle dance music, and sometimes I'd help him work out synth and bass parts.

I was in high school during the grunge era, which was also the techno/Eurodance era, the goth-industrial era, and the groove metal era. And many of my friends have a theatre background and turned me on to musicals and showtunes. Plus I've always loved soundtracks, both from movies and video games.

I'm also in a job where I buy music CDs for a mid-sized Canadian library system that serves a half-rural/half-urban community, and I need to have at least a superficial understanding of most genres.

So in short, I have listened to and liked a lot of different types of music. I basically divide music into two basic categories: stuff I like, and stuff I don't like. I generally don't like rap, country music, R&B, or indie rock. But I have found songs and artists in those genres I like very much. Conversely, I love metal, industrial, and goth music. But there are plenty of artists in those genres I can't stand. And sometimes I love the music but can't stand most of the fanbase. (metalheads) I also appreciate the craftsmanship behind some pop hits, even if I don't like the actual song.

However, I find it harder to like most mainstream pop and rock these days. Part of it is the Loudness war [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war]: I'm a bassist and keyboardist, and if I can't pick those parts out of a mix, I get really irritated. But a lot of it is that other genres have broken off and formed their own subcultures that don't really need mainstream affirmation to exist anymore, and the internet's made it easier for once marginal artists to find fans and distribute their music. (The dark cabaret/steampunk music I currently obsess over is never going to make Top 40, but I'm still happy it's out there.) So even more than in the past, the mainstream represents the lowest common denominator.

That said, I like Lady GaGa too. While I find half her songs dull or stupid, some of her hits are undeniably catchy and cool. And I can't turn away from the spectacle of GaGa: it's like watching a schoolbus on fire going over a cliff--I have to look!

Have fun at her show!

Sooooooooooo tired of these threads. People never miss an opportunity to prove they are different. Once metal and rock became normal nobody hesitated to hold up their love for mainstream as if it was a golden trophy.

I love Metal. I don't care if that makes me more of an individual or not; it's just part of who I am

If it has a really catchy beat (think of My Humps) then I will probably like it.

What I dont like about mainstream is that it gets beat into you. If someone plays the same song more than twice, I get irate. Five times, and its beatdown to the speakers.

Thats why I cant listen to commercial radio, and thus, mainstream

(EDIT: I personally love the Whitlams, Grand Salvo, Sarah Blasco, Kate Miller-Heidke, Powderfinger. Australian, chillaxable, popular but not too popular to get all the air time. Or Cat Empire, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone... I think you get the idea)

Listen to whatever you want. Although I really don't listen to most Top 40 music (why is it Top 40 and not Top 50 anyways?) when I do I'm surprised by how good some of the songs are.
