125 years of military tactics can't be wrong.
Human wave attacks. Invention of machine guns. 'Nuff said.
Fair point, just because a tactic has been used for a long time doesn't make it valid.
However, bolt action rifles have been the centre of sniper tactics that have ruled the battlefield for the PAST 125 years, they are STILL relevant today. Unlike human wave attacks that have been obsolete not just since machine guns but even since the first firearms, snipers remain incredibly hard to counter.
In fact the best counter to a sniper armed with a bolt action rifle, is another skilled sniper with a bolt action rifle. Weapons that are by all definitions antique in design. Recent advancements like fibreglass stocks offer trivial advantages, and even the big .50BMG rifles are a close cousin to the 19th century elephant guns. In fact it is only the bolt action versions of the .50BMG rifles that are reasonably portable.
That's why I think the bolt action sniper rifle is the best, it is such a classic weapon and shows no sign of becoming obsolete in the foreseeable future so you know it's the smart choice too.
PS: This
might make sniping tactics obsolete:
