Were their complaints when Ookami had the player become one of Japan's most revered kami (gods), Amaterasu? I don't think there were any.

Boofrickin'hoo.

No one's deity is safe from the power of video games.
Muahahaha.

I feel no need to defend them. Their god was slandered, oh no, it happens to everyone.

I believe in free speech so, I think they can go shove it really. However if India is really that upset about it then they can ban it.
Free speech works both ways. They can voice their concern if they want.

I wonder how they feel about Final Fantasy.

Shiva from Hinduism:

Shiva from Final Fantasy:
Good point if they really cared about all depictions of deities someone would've been pissed about Shiva by now.
Maybe they cared because it was such an awful game.

This.. I have to admit, I'm a little shocked. Who in their right mind would think making a game about a religious figure of a still active and popular religion was a good idea? Even if the game were true to the Ramayana and its ilk in every conceivable fashion, it'd still be highly questionable - and I doubt it's anywhere near true to it out of simple logistics.

While I realise the two are pretty dissimilar, this is pretty similar to making a game with Jesus as the protagonist (although admittedly that'd play Very differently >.>).

God of War is one thing - it hurts no-one, being based primarily on an all but dead religion - hell, even if there are modern practitioners, they're probably in the same boat as modern druids - crippling lack of functional knowledge of the religion they purport to still be (though Druidism has the advantage of revolving around personal beliefs I guess..), but to use a current religion..
