Historically there's always a glut of dumb apocalyptic thinking every time there's a calendar date that looks a bit funny. Around 1000 AD people thought the world was going to end too. The only thing that will happen after 2012 is less threads like this will get made.

I don't beleive that the world is going to end in any way. However if it was ever going to end any time soon (which has a 99.999999999999999999999999999_% of happening) I would say it would end on 12/21/12 because of the amount of things that point to it.

But the one thing is, if the world was going to end, why not make it 12/12/12, the numbers are the same and it would just be weird. So what i mean is if I was the Myans I would say the world would end on 12/12/12 just to freak people out.

And for all we know 12/21/12 could acually be the year 122,112. This could mean 122,112 AD, or 122,112 BC. Or 122,112 years after the world or intelagent life was created and it could mean the Ice Age (however I really dought thats right, i don't know when the ice age happend) which could mean that the Myans said the world already "died" and it was just rebuildiong it self.

There's a Cracked article that dispels all major theories on this sort of thing.

As George Carlin once said (though in regards to Global Warming):

"Save the planet! - We don't need to save the planet, it's not going anywhere. The planet will be fine. The people are fucked!"

The Mayan calendar ended because...well, look at it - it's written on a circular piece of stone. Do you not think that after planning 3000-2500 years ahead (not really up-to-date on my South American history at the moment) they decided "Ya'know, that's enough" and were running out of room because they were *going in a circle on a stone of fixed size*?

The only "end of the world" scenario that I think holds any weight is the Yellowstone Park Super-volcano. It's unlikely to erupt on 21/12/2012 but it's long overdue an eruption, and overdue eruptions are very bad things.

But yet again it's a case of humanity (and most life) being utterly screwed, the planet has had numerous eruptions like that in the past billions of years and it'll shake it off and life will evolve again.

Polar Switching is inevitable and might cause a lot of problems for things like our technologies - especially all the guidance systems in aircraft and so-forth, but I don't see how it can cause the ending of the human race since none of the "endings" attributed to the polar-switch would actually be effected in *any way* by said switching, as long as the field is still *there* it'll protect the Earth as it always has.

The rest of them...I don't buy into the sci-fi nor religious "dooms" so I can just ignore them and be on my merry way.

Ok a few things. The reason why the Mayans are believed to be so awsome is that they disappeared almost over night. That many people don't just miraculously disappear. Second, the prediction with the long count calender has been enterpreted as a massive CHANGE in the world. It doesn't have to be the end, it could be the beginning. Even a polar reversal, something that has happenned many, many times before, would technicaly be a massive "change", It just wouldnt make much of a difference to us.
I thought that the Mayans died off from Cortez? Or am I just a crappy historian?
No your probly right I'm just saying what I've been told.
Nope. It was the Aztecs who got slaughtered by Cortez. From what I remember, the Mayans disappeared and the Aztecs appeared in their place. I could be wrong though.

I don't think that 2012 is gonna happen. If it does though, then I am just gonna take over my home town with a coup d'etate If I survive. And it would be sad if there was a polar reversal: The birds would all become fudged because they depend on mental magnets to tell which way is north and which is south.

Not like it matters. X Day is coming and I'll be getting the hell off of this planet.

Well, I say the world ends when the world ends, whether it's tomorrow, the next year, 2012, 5683 or 7.483.642. It doesn't matter. What matters is that these people who say the world will end at this and this date should just STFU and GTFHome and live a normal life. Or are they just doing this to see the effect it will have?

Somehow, I don't see 'counting on the apocalypse' as a life philosophy. It sounds like someone who chooses to kill themselves to escape life.

Needless to say, my plans extend beyond 2012.

I don't see why the Mayan calendar is connected to the end of the world. So course is ends. The Mayans were wiped off the map. How can they finish it?

/Aimed at the superstituous people, not the OP.

But yes, the 2012 stuff is just a fad, like Y2K, the Cold War using nukes, the Plauge in the Middle Ages, etc, etc. The benefit? I can rub it in peoples faces once 2013 comes around. That will be fun.
I think the threat of nuclear disaster during the Cold War was a bit more serious than a fad, I mean seriously, they were fucking close to sending nukes during the Cuban missile crisis. Who knows what could have happened.

It would seem that way, but seeing as there are not mass die offs of birds ever couple tens-of-thousands years, it's unlikely. It'll be interesting to see what happened though.
