I'm not very homophobic, but I am slightly put off by really queeny guys that are obviously trying to act that way. At Comic-Con waaaayyyyy back in 2001 in the Spider-Man panel, I was sitting in front of a guy that kept LOUDY talking about what he wanted to do to Tobey Maguire. Just a little obnoxious.

That's hating obnoxious people, not gay people.

He is hating on gay people that are obnoxius about being gay. I dont see what you saw.

I also hate people obnoxious about being gay. Their another example of people cramming their beliefs down your throat out of sheer attention-whoring.

Why is it that people suffer from homophobia? As part of the gay community I've had to deal with the usual verbal/physical assault based around the person/s being homophobic. I've always wondered what exactly it is that causes people to react the way they do around/with gays/bisexuals/etc..

And generally speaking, men tend to be more homophobic than women; why is that? And why doe people in general see lesbians as okay but male gays as freaks of nature? The first thing that comes to mind would probably be the whole 'lesbian acts being a turn-on' thing. But it still doesn't make much sense.

As a warning, if you are homophobic and you aren't going to contribute to this thread positively, don't contribute at all. We don't need flaming going on here.

Fear of their own latent homosexuality. The most homophobic people I've ever met were always on some sports team with other men, so they vehemently declared their hatred for all things homosexual for obvious reasons, like not wanting to be ostracized by their sports buddies for enjoying that pat on the ass after a touchdown too much... it's childish.

Around others, it's basically the same childish phenomenon as a fourth-grader saying "Shut up, I don't like girls!" when his friends start chanting "Diiiick loooves Jaaa-aaaane" in a sing-song tone.

Individually, it's an attempt to both repress their own feelings of latent homosexuality (it doesn't have to be active in any way, it just has to exist; please note that we ALL have it, no exceptions) and to convince others that they're straighter than a laser fired in vaccuum.

Amen brother, I too have suffered that sorta stuff. Most of the times the hatred for gay people is due to their own rampant denial, or for false Religious reasons. The Bible doesn't ACTIVELY condemn homosexuality, no matter what the homophobic priests that belong in the Dark Ages say.

Like someone said on the 1st page, it's still HomoPHOBIA, as in an irrational fear. Most people get over it, the ones who don't are either ill-educated morons, or a member of that cancerous growth on the arse of the world known as the Phelps family.

Religion sadly, also sometimes plays a part. In Christianity, Islam and Judaism for example, homosexuality is forbidden and so these teachings are passed down through religious families. Not only that but the world was a much more religious place even 50 years ago and as such a lot of people would have followed a religion that forbids it.

According to my Rabbi, Judaism doesn't like homosexuality, but it says that if someone is a homosexual then you are to treat them no differently than how you would want to be treated yourself. But I see what your saying.

I'm not homophobic, hell I have a friend that's gay (presumably, he talks, like, really frivolous, like, a queer or someting and it's totaly, like, awesome!) and he's a sweet (in more ways than one) person. Though both he and I do have a problem blatant gays that go around parading in their underpants yelling "I'm gay!"

I say that its in our culture and there's nothing wrong with liking to dress up in cat ears, and people automatically assume that I'm one, too.

Men feel that if they are alright with talking about homosexuality, people are automatically going to assume that they are gay. People think that being gay means that you can't be masculine. That is also stupid, but makes a lot of men try to look down on them, to bolster their own masculinity.

On the why are lesbians more accepted then there male counterparts, I once read the following:

In our society, strong, male behavior is encouraged and accepted (especially by males).
Gay women are perceived as stronger and therefor easier accepted.
Homosexuality in men on the other hand is often seen as a sign of weakness and is frowned upon.

This has been bothering me for quite a while now. It's just another form of sexism.

I think there's an easier reason. As said by my grade 10 civics teacher:
"Lesbians are accepted because guys get turned on by girl-on-girl action."

Gays are fantastic for numerous reasons:

1) They provide zero competition for the affections of the ladies.
2) They go off and have relationships without filling the world with kids (kids r bad).
->2.1) They sometimes adopt orphans and such thereby reducing the tax burden and raising kids better than an orphanage can.
3) Most people who have cut my hair have been gay men... probably
4) They help make the world a more stylish place.
5) Less likely to fall for that religious mumbo-jumbo.

Well, that's not fear over something you can't understand, that's perceived danger. All phobias, whether homophobia or your example, are one or the other.

Ok that one girl with the wierd ideas you mentioned at the end is clearly and obviously wrong (just as much so as those nuts who think 9/11 was an inside job). As for the all-women's college...well as I said on another forum, homosexuality tends to occur when you have a situation where individuals of the same gender are together in a community like that where interaction with the opposite sex if a rare occurrence at best. Hopefully they grow out of it when they graduate.

As a guy who likes girls and girls only I would disagree with Shade, I personally find the sight of two women kissing passionately on the lips to be somewhat repulsive (same thing applies to two men in the same scenario). Admitting my opinion is not shared by all my fellow men but then again neither is yours. All due respect to your teacher but he is wrong.

As a Christian there is always a fine line between what is considered "homophobia" and what is condemnation of the sin of homosexuality. Dkozza, I won't lecture anyone and tend to be in that category of Christians who condemn the act but love the person. I myself am guilty of horrible sins. I sincerely believe though that sometimes what people call homophobia is just a simple condemnation. When name calling and abuse enter the picture then it does become something of a homophobia. I refuse to use the f-word (the one oriented towards homosexuals) for this reason.
