Now I feel sad. A real time MMO could have been good, but....now it's just WoW but with a different skin

And why cancel it? You aren't going to play, so you're entirely unaffected one way or another.
Entirely unaffected? Oh no. What this means is that we're going to have to wait even longer for another ES masterpiece to come along while they're churning out this turd.

Just visited the Bethesda forums and the feedback is vastly negative.

I completely understand why. Bethesda is making the massive mistake many others before them have made. They're trying to be World of Warcraft.

They need to take a cue from Tera Online, Guild Wars 2, and Planetside 2. From all I've seen and heard from these three MMOs are that they stating that they are NOT WoW.

They figured why try to climb the hotkey MMO mountain that WoW has dominated for 7 years, when there are all these other MMO mountains to climb that are just as high?

Let's hope Bethesda and Zenimax see the error of this decision and opt for a 2-4 player, invite only, Co-Op mode DLC for Skyrim instead.
Bethesda isnt making the game and have no hand in it besides lore.

also if you look at the gameplay list from the gameinformer leaks you would see TES Onlin takes many of guild wars 2's features.

How is Bethesda going to be affected by what Zenimax online does............

You guys are a bunch of pessimists... C'mon, there is a reason WoW is the most popular MMO: They've done it right (mostly. I think GW2 is better). Since WoW's model seems solid, it makes sense that a company who also wants to be successful will emulate it. I'm not saying that they should make it EXACTLY like WoW, but why fix what isn't broken? Plus, we are seeing early development stuff so you can't just assume that they're gonna do a carbon-copy of WoW. This is Zenimax we're talking about, not Zynga.

Seriously, give some more time and thought before swearing it off forever. Myself? I'm gonna be logical and not have a cemented opinion before I see some actual reviews/gameplay.

The Game Informer leaks show a surprising list of features found in TES Online that are also found in GW2.

The base game of TES online is woW like but they are smart enough to take parts of other big MMos that are doing things different as to not be an exact wow clone.

When will major publishers and developers figure out that copying popular ideas doesn't mean you'll copy those original ideas success? We've seen so many MMO come and go by now who've tried to 'topple' World of Warcraft by emulating it, even Blizzard themselves know they're not going to repeat that success with the same formula judging by what little is known about their upcoming 'Titan' project.

Still it's far too early to judge just yet. It is disappointing however that they went this route instead of trying something new however, that is at least if this information is correct.

Imma just going to wait to see if this will actually be terrible. I mean, it definitely looks the part, but it might actually be good. Who knows?

Because they go through this every time and people tell them every time that they're sick of it.

If people have been playing WoW for 5 years then they're not going to drop it for something with seemingly gimmicky differences - and if they were sick of WoW they're not going to go back to something like it.

'it makes sense that a company who also wants to be successful will emulate it.'

Surprisingly, 'good business sense' isn't quite as impressive as creativity.

The problem with emulating WoW is that it causes stagnation, people aren't going to leave WoW to play WoW reskinned, they want something a little bit different; it's why GW2 has so much hype behind it.

Anyway, from what I have seen of this leaked article (precious little, I fear) there's far more to it than the author of the Kotaku article would have us believe.

Agreed, let's not make any sudden judgments off of an incredibly biased article.

The same way EA's failures affected Bullfrog and the other developers it did away with.

If The Elder Scrolls Online fails it will affect Zenimax's profit margins, which could mean cost cutting through the one's who spend the money, the developers like Bethesda.

So they're just copycatting two big MMOs instead of one. Doesn't change anything. If they don't keep the same feel that the single player TES games have, then the reaction will remain negative.

Surprisingly, 'good business sense' isn't quite as impressive as creativity.
Surprisingly, "good business sense" doesn't live up to the adjective "good" a lot.

I had hoped that maybe, just maybe they'd try something new, keep the core gameplay that everyone enjoys about the TES series, but if they're really just going to make another MMO...what the hell is the point(other than trying to rake in money)? Oh well...hey maybe the Fallout MMO will be worth playing.

I really don't like this. But! I acknowledge that some do, that combined with the fact that it's not being made by Bethesda (so it isn't actually hampering the real elder scrolls games)means I'm not too fussed over its creation. However, I really hope this doesn't screw up the lore. I don't want another dues ex machina dragonbreak to have to explain everything this game could potentially fuck up.

Elder Scrolls has always been about ultimately becoming a god that walks like a man. An MMO wouldn't be able to incorporate that to begin with. Still, the idea of a real-time first-person MMO was pleasing.

Color me uninterested.
Unless they handle leveling/loot progression like Dragon Ball Z handles villains.

In reference to the point about there being level limits on certain areas of the game...

Isn't this a necessity of MMOs? The game can't scale to one individual, as it does in Skyrim.
True, but they could implement a way to still give a sense of everyone doing their own thing. As in there could be a starter zone in each respective region where the races originate (assuming that Dark Elfs are from Morrowind, Nords are from Skyrim, etc), and then the rest of the zone could be split into sub-zones (to a certain extent, you'd still want people traveling around). For instance, Skyrim could have a starter zone for Nords (Whiterun and its surrounding areas, perhaps), then the other races in the faction that contains the Nords can have sub-zones in Skyrim that level from like 10-15 and another that goes from 35-40. This is all just a rough example, obviously, and I'm not even sure I like it that much. Were the Nords allied with the Breton, then the Nords could travel to High Rock to level from 15-20, and elsewhere (Elsweyr perhaps? haha, sorry) to get to 35 to go back to Skyrim for leveling. Again, that example would be assuming the Nords and Breton are allied.

Essentially what I am saying is, while I enjoy the Elder Scrolls franchise, I do hope they do their thing. I won't be as inclined to get this if they are just a carbon copy. They have to be an MMO obviously, but I also think that they shouldn't follow the current cookie-cuter format of MMOs today (cooldown abilities, tri-tree class specializations, etc).

They implied that it's been under wraps for YEARS. They're almost done. The damage has happened.

This game is going to fail miserably. One of the most important ingredients to an MMO is at least an attempt at making a balance game between classes, and considering Bethesda's track record. We're doomed.

Oh, Bethesda, if this is what you're gonna do, don't even waste your time. Hell, make a sequel to WET instead of this; that probably wouldn't suck as much.

MMO's have almost always eventually crashed and burned since WoW because all they do is try to out-WoW WoW. It never goes well. And hardly any publisher wants to try a new approach to an MMO because they cost a fuckload of money.

It's a lose-lose situation.

Well I wasn't that excited, I am more of a singleplayer guy and also, Skyrim kind of ruined the Elder Scrolls to me.

The Kotaku article almost looks as if someone paid them to make TES Online sound as much shit as possible.
