Most people qualify Evangelion as ending badly. And not just badly by the standards you list, badly by the standard of "WHAT....THE...HELL... JUST HAPPENED".

If you want to know which ones to avoid you can always look up "Diabolus Ex Machina" on tvtropes and look under Anime, that should pretty much cover it.

I LOVED EVENGELLION BUT THE ENDING WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST WTF MOMENTS OF MY LIFE (im saying i agree)

Ruruoni(SP?) Kenshin and GTO are those anime that ended prematurely, since they were aired while the manga was on-going and back then, fillers weren't all that popular (not that they are popular today, anyway).

At least in Kenshin, you got closure with the movie
Kenshin died in the arms of Kaoru after a very long separation. What he died from was left unexplained, but I bet it's a lethal combination of stress and infection (probably leprosy or tetanus, seeing as he is cut very severely in several places during the course of the series).

that's pretty sad how anime's riff so far off from their manga counterparts.

in the end of the manga yahiko is given kenshin's reversal sword after a duel with yours truly. yahiko sets off to his own personal adventures at the feverish age of 15 while kenshin happily retires with kaoru and his child (minato?)

I loved Princess Tutu *ducks the 'wtf-is-that-girly-shit-bricks* but the ending left me really dissatisfied. Sure, you can accuse me of being a biased fangirl, but I was more than a little peeved when one character I liked blatantly rejected a rather realistic secondary character who helped her with her identity issues in favor of the guy she had an unhealthy obsession over and who was also admired by my favorite character. And said guy seemed to become something of a jerk in the end. It was probably to show that not even the nicest character from the crazy author's fairy tales could be completely likeable, but since we spent most of the series being shown that he was really a virtuous, loving person underneath all the trauma, I felt more than a little let down.

Also, the ending is at best bittersweet, and at worst depressing as hell.

Mytho picks Rue to be his princess over Ahiru, Ahiru is forced to turn back to a duck forever, two of her best friends leave their world and nobody else except for Fakir EVER remembers her.

There was an inkling of hope when Mytho said he suspected he and Rue were still contaminated by the evil Raven's blood and when we see a final shot of crazy old Drosselmeyer carrying off Uzura, saying he 'hopes she won't let him down' this time, but it was never picked up upon again.

Maybe it's because there was supposed to be a third season that was cut for funding, and it made the whole finale seem sort of rushed.

Worst ending I can think of is for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai.

There was closure, no loose ends, everything was explained, and there was a happy ending.
This would seem like a good ending, if it weren't for one thing: It's Higurashi no Naku Koro ni!

An anime that prided itself on WTF moments, and horrible, brutal, scenes of mutilation. And it gets a happy ending that makes seance?!

Double-you Tee Eff!

If we're talking about just a series here, excluding movies or manga.... then uh.... well damn near every one I've seen has had an either stupid or lack-luster ending. It's at the point where I don't even watch them until the end anymore. You know what's gonna happen already anyways most of the time, it's become so cliche and predictable.

And that's only for the ones that you CAN call endings, since some stuff is just left hanging up in the air, in limbo like "I COULD continue... but will I?" I'm looking at YOU Getbackers!

You know which ending sucked? Fuckin Nadesico. The main guy and the main girl are like arguing about... I can't remember, some stupid shit, after fighting a battle in the crappy mechs they have in that series, and then they just kiss in the middle of the arguement, and then the credits roll. I just stared at the screen for a while, just feeling undignified that I even watched that crap.

Kenshin's last episode sucked too (I'm excluding the movie), but then again, the entire third arc was crap since they caught up to the manga. Honestly, I would've LOVED to have seen the whole Jinchu arc get animated, but no. They made up some lame filler crap about oppressed Christians and Fung Shuei and shit...... and then made an episode where Kenshin and Kaoru were on a real world beach. Who thought that was a good idea?!

You know, I think this list would be shorter to write if the question had been "What are some good anime endings".

I don't watch too much anime, but I do have one to throw in:

Gundam Seed Destiny.

Dear God...how is it that no one mentioned this ending yet? The series started out much better than its predecessor, Gundam Seed. Then, they decided to shift focus away from the true main cast and put all the focus on the old main cast from Seed. This wouldn't have been a problem if there was actual character development. Instead, the character of Kira just sorta stagnates. It is boring. There is no struggle or anything. Kira stays EXACTLY THE SAME throughout Destiny. It doesn't help that Kira and Lacus are regular Mary Sues that are portrayed as the definition of purity, innocence, and righteousness while everyone else not with the Three Ships/ORB is dirty, evil, genocidal maniacs (Alliance) or control freaks (ZAFT).

Meanwhile, Shin, who was supposed to be the main character, is slowly reduced to a barking dog unable to think for himself that alternates between good guy and bad guy depending on the situation. Participating in an assault on the overwhelmingly black Alliance bad guys? Shin is good. Fighting Jesus Kira and his disciples? Shin is bad again.

Finally, we have the actual ending. The actual ending is a nearly 100% repeat of Seed's ending. Cocking Hell, episode 49 of Destiny is made up almost entirely of modified stock footage from episode 49 of Seed! A large chunk of episode 50 also reuses stock footage from episode 50 of Seed. Oh noes, someone fired a powerful beam at Archangel! Good thing Mwu is there WITH THE EXACT SAME STOCK FOOTAGE to save the day again! The first time it was a powerful sacrifice. Second time it was lame and retarded, especially since Mwu didn't "die" the second time...

Then, when episode 50 finally ended, it didn't "end" so much as just sorta...Stop. There was no actual ending or closure. The original ending was so bad they actually remade episode 50 with more footage for the DVD release. Unfortunately, while there is some closure added, for the most part the alternate version of episode 50 was still pretty terrible and did little to relieve the venom I feel for the series.

Ugh...The ending of that series was just a complete mess. I'm a long time Gundam fan and Destiny ALMOST made me lose all faith in anything decent coming out of the Gundam franchise anymore.

Aw. I loved Berserk. I know that wasn't supposed to be where it ends, but i didn't mind it somehow. And while i'm sure the manga is better, I don't see myself reading it; I'm not really the comics type. Wikipedia offers some analysis on the series:

Though the manga storyline remains largely intact, many changes were made concerning the modification or elimination of characters, some of the series' most violent and brutal scenes, and material that would have extended the storyline beyond the planned run of the anime series. Themes of friendship and ambition are more developed and emphasized than those of causality and the supernatural in part because of these changes, all of which were made with the approval of the series creator, Kentarô Miura.

If that's the case, I'd rather take the themes of friendship and loyalty over those of cause and the supernatural.

The first Hellsing anime's ending was so bad it wasn't funny. It didn't help that the second half was utter rot anyway.

Another major offender would be Mahoromatic which suffered from mood whiplash raised to the tenth power.

Then we end up with shows like Madlax and Wolf's Rain which are just mean-spirited.

EDIT:

Air Gear... Goddammit... Why make an anime in the first place if your not going to finish it?
Beet the Vandal buster also died in mid-production, leaving things hanging just over halfway through the final battles.

You know what Penguin, I want yo congratulate you. You managed to get me to get off my ass (in the proverbial sense, you're actually keeping me on my ass in the physical sense), make a profile, hell even add an avatar just so I could call you an idiot.

A huge, smelly idiot. (the Smelly part is merely an assumption on my end)

The show was called Code Geass. In the world of Geass, what does Code mean? I suggest you scramble around on Wikipedia (which I know no matter what you will, if you were willing to ***** about the ending in such a manner) looking for that.

You know what? I'll save you twenty minutes:

"the one who granted the power can relinquish his or her immortality to the recipient, allowing the recipient to continue the cycle while the giver is allowed to die. The immortality is referred to as the giver's "Code," and grants the person immunity to Geass in exchange for their original power."

Did you think CC was just hanging out in some church, kicking back, having a fun time?! NO! She gave Lelouch her fucking Code so when he was stabbed, he was still alive. Which is why she said what she said at the end about not being lonely, and why there were two paper cranes.

And now you're asking why I did all this to explain to you this very simple thing: Because it was a fantastic ending. It was so good, it should never, EVER have been mentioned on this list.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni had an awesome ending, and I'll tell Oyashiro-sama on you if you disagree.

Wow, I am American, btw.

Yes, I find 24 annoying personally and LOST.
I prefer HOUSE with random twists and sub plots. I also dig Lie to me, very interesting show. Entertaining with no frills.

Alot of people dont like HOUSE or Lie to ME. I was just expressing my opinion.

Most endings really dont make sense. The artist always has a view of how things should end, and quite often that view doesnt make sense to anyone else.

I do believe most american viewers want to be spoon fed... I only watch subtitle versions because they are generally the closest translation. And Foreign actors often convey emotional conviction better.

Everyone here should checkout "Chocolat" a Thai film available on youtube. Excellent fighting film. Subtitled

I demand you retract that statement. Immediately.

In truth, i don't watch much anime. But i know gold when i see it and will suffer no unfounded slight against it.
agreed. Ghost in the shell is excellent, (if a little hard to follow sometimes.)
GITS is the Summa Cum Laude of anime. The only problem is you may need to watch it twice to fully understand it.

Remember this was in 1996, not 2006. Artistically and technically, it was head and shoulders above everything else and still is in most cases. Visually it was a marvel.

Often times it's exposition went on a huge tangent with seemingly no reason but, like I said, on second view you can see the purpose. It's full of intelligent social, political and philosophical commentary that can be a little far reaching at times, but isn't over the moon like Hideo Kajima.

But if you're a Jerry Bruckheimer fan, then no, you probably won't like it. Sometimes you need to wait 20 minutes for an explosion.

Gundam Seed, they killed MWU, oh wait then they brought his ass back in Seed Destiny, never bothered to explain how he survived, since you see his busted helmet floating in space.

Pokemon, because as far as I know, it has not ended.

It is a fine line to walk really, you never want to see the favorite characters die but sometimes it gets hard to advance the series without it.

Gundam 00 season 2- Not over yet, 9 episodes left I believe, but this is seriously starting to get messed up, the protagonist is turning into a wussy.
How exactly is Setsuna turning into a wussy?

Edit: Personally I prefer Setsuna in S2 than S1. He is more mature in S2 than he ever was in S1. And if there is one character turning into a wussy, that would be Allelujah ever since his crazy alter-ego went to "sleep". He is not even getting any damn screen time now, just chilling with his gf =D
Seconded, I never liked Al to begin with but without Hal (who I did like) he's a nobody with no personality. I like Tieria a lot more this season, ditto Setsuna. Lockoff isn't as cool as Lockon but still lol.

Also I thought CG ending was fucktacular, mostly because I'd been going WTF for the past few eps and I thought that was a good way for Lelouch to redeem himself.

Death Note was a good ending too but it was a little irksome, the second movie (live action) had a cool take on it, but not as dramatic.

OH! Hellsing. Double-u Tee Eff. Seriously, I couldn't tell what the heck happened in that last episode and then there was the stupid cliffhanger of sorts. I hope Ultimate is better.

Death Note's ending was a bit iffy to me. It wasnt bad but the show could have been at least 3 episodes longer. It just didnt thrill me, not like how xxxholic thrills me with some of its episodes.
