There's nothing wrong with eating horses exactly. I think the French do it? And supposedly it tastes like beef, only a little tougher. Is it because of the romanticism Americans have for horses because of cowboy movies and etc.? Shouldn't we also not eat lamb, because they're a popular attraction in petting zoos?

I can just imagine how this ban originally came into effect:

Circa Wild West

Cowboy: "Al right dagnabit, where the heck is my horse?"

*Guilty looks around the room as well fed cowboys try to hide plates of meat*

Cowboy: "ye sons of bitches, you ate my horse again! Di'n cha?! There should be a law against horse eatnin' I tells ya!"

Honestly, i'm pretty sure we could literally GROW meat without ever harming a animal at this point.

I don't see why we still go out and kill other creatures when we don't need to, ESPEICALLY now that we don't even need to do so to get meat.
Stop.

Just think about what you are asking, for a moment, and realise that creating substitute meat rahter than taking it from animals would be bad for all involved.

For us humans, it would run the risk of unexpected and entirely unpleasent affects, it would also be a massive undertaking to provide enough meat for all the humans in the world.

For the meat animals.. it would basically mean that they need to, at best, be allowed to die out completely.. possibly, overpopulation and the fact their animals were now financially worthless would mean farmers would simply slaughter and destory them.

As for those farmers... and the whole meat industry as it exists.. what exactly do you propose to do about the financial ruin your idea is visiting upon them?

Not as simple as bleeding heart "we shouldn't kill the fuzzy cute critters" now is it.

Meat is meat.

The most interesting I thing I find about this article was the ban on horse meat FAILED but they still managed to enforce it. This is not unusual in and of itself, but it was highlighted here quite nicely. They couldn't ban the sale of horse meat out-right, so they reduced funding for the department that regulated this stuff. The effect meant the department could not do it's job, in this case issuing 'health stamps,' and made trade in horse meat illegal by de facto because no one could get the stamps needed to sell it.

Politics, across the board, is filled with this underhandedness.

I honestly think it was silly in the first place. Yes I see horses as companion/work animals like many other U.S'ians (in fact there are two on our property that act as spoiled lawnmowers), but it's still a silly ban. I doubt I'll ever be presented with the opportunity to try it but a horse has -a lot- of meat on it, which I would imagine is quite lean.

I came in here hoping to make a Rainbow dash/MLP joke but I see my work has been done for me...multiple times. Well I suppose I can now faithfully recreate that one scene from O Brother Where Art Thou.

THE SLAUGHTERING PROCESS IS INHUMANE!

Ok, so, oversee it so that it IS humane?

CAN'T BE BOTHERED. TOO MANY BEEF PROCESSING PLANTS TO OVERSEE.

It'll be like, 3 more plants over the course of the next year...

DON'T CARE, DON'T KILL HORSES, IT'S INHUMANE.

So, what are they supposed to do with horses they can't afford?

KEEP THEM AND GO BANKRUPT. BUTCHER THE HORSE YOURSELF FOR SUSTENANCE.

(Imagining the pro-ban lobbyists as courage wolf.)

Oh I am so getting all over this. That's right Lyra avatar, look frightened, your gonna be pony bacon soon enough.

You can make bacon out of horse meat right? I'd assume it's close enough to pork to do that.

I hear a guy named Mr. hands enjoyed horse meat... a lot...and it didn't go well for him....

Also, looking forward to the happy meals packed with McPony burgers, just to see the looks on their precious little faces.

Not sure if anyone said it or not....

But im sure its because someone played Skyrim, killed their horse, ate the meat it dropped, and wondered what horse really tastes like.

They had to get it un-banned so they could try.
