How come there's no Sports Forum?

It has occurred to me that the Escapist doesn't have a sub-forum dedicated to sports. So I was wondering how this could be; It's usually a topic that garners a great deal of attention and easily lends itself to all kinds of discussions. Especially if you consider the Escapist's diverse user base.

Is it because gamers have no demand for anything sport related? I'm almost inclined to believe so, seeing how there are barely any threads about sport at all. Or is it simply because we lack a proper venue to facilitate these kinds of threads?

What do you think, my fellow Escapists?

I dont know if there's really enough threads to justify a sub-forum. You could say the same thing about other subjects, like cooking, music, or films. Seeing as how this is a forum dedicated to gaming, everything else goes in off-topic.

Wouldn't that end up like an flame forum? I'm pretty sure you're just pitting people against eachother like that.

I think it does just come down to the fact that there aren't enough threads to warrant a separate sub-forum for it. I can't even remember the last time I saw a sport-related thread, so I'm inclined to believe that there really aren't that many.

Yes, but what if we got this backwards? Maybe there are not enough threads about it, because there's no proper place to put them?

Creating a thread about say Liverpool in the Off-topic section does feel sorta out of place, after all.

This is a gaming forum, so if you want to talk about sports, you go to off topic. Simple.

Should we close the Religion and Politics Forum, then?

There are plenty of dedicated sports forums out there that don't descend into flame wars; have faith in your fellow Escapists. ;)

You can talk about games on a games forum (the escapist) and you talk about sports on a sports foruum (not the escapist). See? I'ts not that hard to understand.

Why, thank you. This sure explains why noone on the Escapist talks about Off-topic stuff or things like Religion and Politics. They go to dedicated Off-topic forums and Religion and Politics forums for that.

You're right. It's truly not that hard to understand.

Don't think most gamers follow sports actively enough to start actual discussions on them. Don't get me wrong, I watch sports from time to time, but for me to actually start discussing something like that in a forum thread, I just don't see it happening

I would like to see some sort of sports section or at least more sports discussions. I understand that this is a gaming forum, but theres always a tonne of non game related threads that make it through. Sports always seem to hit a bad nerve with gamers, which only helps nourish the old stereotypes.

To put it another way, id personally rather see a premier league or nfl discussion over another "zombie apocalypse" or "why do people like halo/cod/final fantasy/battlefield.......anything popular?"

How come there's no fashion sub-forum? No history sub-forum? No current events forum? No car sub-forum? Etc.

This is a specialised gaming forum for a gaming magazine.

We have an advice sub-forum because there you can put questions and have a marginally better chance of not being trolled into next wednesday.

We have a Religion and Politics sub-forum because people insist on making those sorts of threads either to genuinely discuss it, demand others change their views, troll, flame, flamebait, etc. The sub-forum exists so moderators can sling those sorts of threads in there and lock the doors while the inhabitants fall on each other and the rest of the forum carries on its normal function.

In short: We have sub-forums that have arisen and were not there at the forum's founding due to the need to have them. An overwhelming amount of threads along those lines were made and so someone made a place to put them so the main forum could carry on its business.

TL;DR: Sports doesn't have enough of a following here. Usergroups or specialised sports forums are better and there you will run into people that want to discuss sports.

That is the point of off topic forum. The only reason Religion and Politics gets its own thing is due to the fact that people here think they can talk about those subjects which they can't as it just devolves into flamewars. This is also why it has its own section.

There just isn't enough interest, I'd assume. The kind of people who play video-games don't tend to be the kind of people who play/watch sports, so it wouldn't be worthwhile to put a sports section in a gaming forum, just as it probably wouldn't be worthwhile to put a gaming section in a sports forum.

Although I'm sure there are quite a few gamers on this site who like sports, I'm also sure that there are quite a few more gamers who like, I don't know, anime for example. Yet we don't have dedicated sections for that either.

Fair enough. It still strikes me as somewhat odd, though. I'd have expected more sport related threads from such a diverse user base.

It usually does crop up as a dedicated section (even if it's just a sub-forum of a sub-forum) even in other specialised forums.

That's a good point, really. I should've asked why there's no dedicated anime forum, might've been more popular.

So all we have to do is flood the Off-topic Discussion with tonnes of sport related threads and be petulant while we're at it? ;)
