How come there's no Sports Forum?

If you get a sports forum, can I get a cooking forum?

Or can we just use off-topic for such things as we usually do?

I would love a Sports area. I don't know what I would do without football (American) season and I still miss playing football every day of my life.

Because sports falls under the category of "off-topic", and if we started making little subsections like sports then navigating around the forums would be horrible.

for the reason they get ignored.

I mean I would like to express my joy that Yankees are ousted from playoff but then no one would give crap about any of that stuff.

I've always wondered about that...
I love talking about football (UK), and I was hoping to have that here as well. not to mention all the world cup contestants I'd like to trash haha

If any topic were getting enough threads to justify its own section, it would probably be Ponies.

Love a sport subsection on these forums, there are alot gamers /on this site who are sports fans. Another plus the off topic forums would never again see the soccer/football debate threads :p

Wouldn't that end up like an flame forum? I'm pretty sure you're just pitting people against eachother like that.
Possibly, though most talk between opposing sport fans tends to be more friendly banter than anything more vicious.

You can talk about games on a games forum (the escapist) and you talk about sports on a sports foruum (not the escapist). See? I'ts not that hard to understand.
Why, thank you. This sure explains why noone on the Escapist talks about Off-topic stuff or things like Religion and Politics. They go to dedicated Off-topic forums and Religion and Politics forums for that.

You're right. It's truly not that hard to understand.
Maybe we should have a sarcasm sub-forum... no we already have both off-topic and R&P for that! Wooh!

Really, the reasons are simple, a sports section would use relatively similar rules to off-topic, where as Advice and R&P have very unique moods. And there are not NEARLY enough threads to warrant it, R&P was made because those threads were darkening off-topic quite badly. Advice was made for a serious advice section that still gets a lot of views. Sports would have neither a very unique mood nor very many topics...

There are three criteria that something should fulfill before one considers suggesting it as a sub-forum:

1. There is a blatant need or demand.
2. A sub-forum for it would promote thorough discussion and positive forum interaction.
3. the topic requires a specific type of moderation separate from those of the General Discussion and Off Topic forums.

Ask yourself: do sports really fit these criteria?

I actually started a thread asking whether Good Hitting beats Good Pitching in baseball. The thread died before it took one breath. I decided from then on that sports threads just don't belong here. I can't deal with that loss again! T___T

*ahem*

But yeah. There should be more. It would add a little variety to the discussions.

It has occurred to me that the Escapist doesn't have a sub-forum dedicated to sports. So I was wondering how this could be; It's usually a topic that garners a great deal of attention and easily lends itself to all kinds of discussions. Especially if you consider the Escapist's diverse user base.

Is it because gamers have no demand for anything sport related? I'm almost inclined to believe so, seeing how there are barely any threads about sport at all. Or is it simply because we lack a proper venue to facilitate these kinds of threads?

What do you think, my fellow Escapists?
Rather than asking why we don't have one, perhaps you should create a poll asking whether or not people would visit those forums. If there is enough support, find someone important at the Escapist staff and show them the poll.

It's worth a shot, I suppose.

I'll try to be nicer if he tries to be less patronising.

That's certainly the most apparent answer. But the point of this thread was partly to figure out whether it's the only one. But it's moot anyway - the people have spoken. ;)

I was thinking about it to be honest, but I decided against it. I am, contrary to popular opinion, not actively petitioning for such a sub-forum.

I don't know about everyone else but I really have a strong dislike for sports. It'll be just another part of the forum I don't browse.

Not enough people here show the interest to talk about just sports like they do about gaming, religion/politics, off topic stuff (though usually everything just ends up in off topic anyway cause people dont understand the idea of a forum).

Also you have to uphold the stereotype that gamers are diametrically opposed to sports. joking

But... but that's practically my job here! Besides, we are on Off-topic as we speak... and you know what that means ;)

Yes, it would be the only one, all the other sub-forums have big demand, different moderation and a totally different atmosphere :)

Perhaps I was a bit too defensive. It was the first thread I started, after all. And everyone would just get in and post "It's a gamers forum, durr hurr!" and bugger right off. Like I didn't get the memo the first three times. That's what I call quality discussion.

Anyhow. I probably should have asked for an anime forum. Wonder how that would have been received.

Oh well, I shall just accept it as it is.
