Resistance anyone? First Resistance game was pretty awesome. Even though we beat it already like 4 times, sometimes my friends and I still launch split-screen co-op campaign, and play it again just for fun.

Resistance 2 however? Bland plot, bland weapons, bland multiplayer, no split-screen co-op campaign (it had split-screen co-op maps, but they were crappy), and no fun whatsoever.

What the hell happened?

Prince of Persia, I loved the older series (SoT) but 2008 version had everything that SoT had, but the WRONG AMOUNT. The battles happened every hour, they were annoying and had no fun combat moves, the acrobatics and free running were great, but faaaar too much of them were put in, and the puzzles were atrocious compared to SoT!

Knights of the Old Republic. Not only was The Sith Lords chopped off at about 75% completion, the "influence" system turned character interactions into number crunching, the random loot drops were ridiculous, and the ability to break down and reconstruct gear was completely superfluous.

I'm gonna raise my hand prematurely and say the new Splatterhouse coming out this Fall (So they say.) It was an awesome series of side-scrollers, that didn't rely on any 'Ooga-booga I'm Doom 3' horror and I hope they don't lose that.

Wouldn't mind if the gameplay was enthralling, as well.

Since C&C and TES have already (rightfully) been called out, I think I'll go rant about a game that's only been mentioned once so far: Master of Orion 3
The thing is, the game is absolutely perfect for what it wants to be; you, the player, is in charge of an galactic empire, and you only set the grand development plan. The game executes that perfectly well, but the thing is, setting a development plan for each class of planet, followed by endlessly clicking next turn until you finally research something interesting is NOT FUN! Sure you can care for planets individually, but you'll control about 5 times as many as are humanly possible to manage after the first ten or so minutes. Then there is the combat, which is bland to say the least. Not to mention carriers being ridiculously overpowered...
Also, why the hell can't I fully customize my race? And why would a former ally declare war on me, send his entire fleet to its doom, sue for peace, ask for another alliance, then repeat? The AI is more than just retarded. It's also quite sad that I keep playing this game, as it runs rather well on my netbook...

Uhm, Neverwinter Nights 2 was pretty damn terrible. I regret pre-ordering it... I mean, for a game it's okay, but series has gone downhill ever since.

Oh, and Guild Wars. Loved it for 3 years, then the "add-on" with 6 hours campaign and recycled armor skins and boring missions + power creep to nth power came along.
The Hero system I think spelled the end of GW as people could do missions easily on their own which killed the need to have a party for a mission. So sad though as the best part of it for me was getting a party and doing it with them.

Hero system is what saved the game. I never felt the need to party with other people. All pugs so far were:

a) stupid
b) moronic
c) disobedient
d) unskilled
e) ALL OF THE ABOVE.

And yeah, e) is the most common option. After Nightfall, I never EVER had to join a PuG. Thank God. If not for the heroes, I would probably continue playing with henchmen till I got bored with the missions.
Well maybe you just had bad experiences I have ne ver had problems with PUGs and have always found them better than heroes. It killed the need to play with other people which is what was bad about heroes you can it is good if you want that is just opinion but regardless it did spell the end of GW.

Well that is kinda the point as Heroes encouraged people to be more like this and not work together even more and killed the socil aspect of the game. Fair enough there are bad Pugs but there are plenty of good ones. Regardless of opinion on the matter it did spell the end of GW.

But it's apparent that we will never see a game as strong as OOT or (the golden beacon of games) Majora's Mask.
I totally disagree. The Windwaker was an amazing game, with a huge world, a great story, and lots of islands to explore!
No. Just no.
The Windwaker fits though. You aren't running circles around the map in five minutes like in OoT and TP. And it actually ends in a way that ensures that Ganondorf can't return. Unlike Oot where all that you have to do is kill of the guardians to save him.

Jak And Daxter.

Why would you build the game from the ground up on PSP then port to PS2? It even has the same camera controls as the PSP version.
I loved the first, the second, and even the third; I never ventured further though due to my PS2 being broken..

Anyway. OT time! To be fair, I can't actually pick any one series that's been ruined because there are just such a large variety to choose from... So here goes.

Fallout - I loved FO 1, 2 and Tactics (Ok, Tactics wasn't as good as the original two, and I know I'm going to get slated for saying this, but it was still better than 3); but Fallout 3 was just fail in a bucket.

Final Fantasy - 7 was enough. I'd be happy if Square Enix remade FF7 and then NEVER WENT NEAR THE SERIES EVER AGAIN. It's getting old and bland and repetative and bland.

Zelda - I agree with the OP on this one, and to be fair, enough is enough.

Halo - Ok, admittedly, it's redeemed itself slightly since the release of ODST and the Halo: REACH Beta; I thoroughly despised Halo 3 for a variety of reasons though.

Anything related to Mario... I mean really, it's just old now. I'd like Nintendo to create a new character for once.

I think I'll stop here and go ahead committing even more blatant social suicide when I say that I dislike Half-Life 2: Episode 1 and Half-Life 2: Episode 2. I know for a fact that this'll get me pretty much verbally abused until I give up coming on this website, but I do have my reasons. The whole, Episode 1 being like four odd hours of gameplay without any replay value at all, and Episode 2 not actually adding very much to the series in way of storyline; it all seemed to just be fillers more than anything else.

Oh, and also...

Deus Ex - invisible wars is in all ways worse then the first
Resident Evil - in the fifth instalment they removed everything what maked this game a horror game. Who in devils name makes a horror game/movie in the middle of the day???
The answer:
Valve (Left4Dead2 was set in the day at least partially, only played a little bit of it)

MW2 felt like a punch in the balls, with the fist having brass knuckles.
This is true. The first one had at least a semblance of originality. Second one was a like 30 movies wrapped into one.

I think Prince of Persia got better every time they made a new one.
please tell me you didn't know one came out for the xbox 360.

because the sands of time series where AWESOME, but the one for the xbox 360 was a letdown beyond repair.

Its not even the same developer... after seeing "based on a game made by naughty dog" I put the game down.

DOOM

We had 2 games that was nothing but kicking ass and chewing bubble gum, with no gum left. then they got all this atmosphere and poorly implemented, lazy horror by just making everything dark and suddenly it just felt bland... We suddenly found that we had a lot more chewing-gum. DOOM3 just doesn't stand out in my mind for something I'd want to play again any time soon.

The entire time I just thought... where's the guitar riffs and kicking ass??
I don't want eerie, suspenseful music while playing a DOOM game, I want MIDI versions of AC/DC riffs!!!

I had fun at the time... but it didn't last. The scares became predictable.
A lot of wasted potential

Empire Earth (II and III were horrible)

Grand theft Auto (After San Andreas)

CoD (After CoD4)

Command and Conquer

Spyro series (After A Hero's Tail)

Pokemon (after emerald)
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald were the weakest entries of the Pokemon series, they removed so much from the previous generation. Diamond/Pearl brought a lot of those features back. Sure the stories are the same but who in their sane mind would ever play a Pokemon game for the story?

Personally for me it'd be Final Fantasy. I was able to play through X but haven't been able to play through one since, can still head back to IV, XI, IX every now and then though.

I'm sure a lot of people will note Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Jak & Daxter, but anyone could predict that having theses games switch developers meant their downfall. So I really wasn't that surprised or upset over it.

A series who's decline I was upset about was Oddworld. Abe's Oddysee = Fan-fucking-tastic. Abe's Exodus = dito.
But then came Munch's Oddysee............What the fuck, Lorne?
