In order to open the game up to a wider demographic or the main developers on the project live in a bubble and only what they invent is allow into the project. These 2 things are the reason why most games suck, are under developed or just plain unfinished IMO.

They almost did this with the Devil May Cry series, even if I will contend that the second wasn't quite as bad as people make it. Cheif amongst these must be the Sonic series surely. The 2D titles were, and generally still are, quality. The intial 3D games showed potential, which was then shit all over.

I am gonna have to say the Command and Conquer series, particularly in Command and Conquer 4, anyone who's played it will know what i'm talking about

Earthbound. Just... what. The. Fuck. Nintendo. You actually made that game a fail, and on so many fronts.

[sub]If they wanted it to sell well they could have sold it in Europe as well[/sub]

You can go ahead and add me to that list, I love the first two. Interesting take on the Norse Mythos and a radical combat system that'd require tactical planning for the really beautiful stuff. I'm still hoping for some sort of decent game with Hrist as the main character.
You have no idea how much I want a Hrist game. I just think it would be hard for them to make a game based on her. I mean, with how she is shown in the first 2, all they would have to work with is her and Brahms' back story together. But from 2, that just seems like it just comes down to him taking Silmeria in the original time line. And that event changed during 2 anyway. Still, I hope they at least try to make one with her as the main character. Maybe they could have something to show why she is the only one that was so loyal to Odin in the beginning.

Uhm, Neverwinter Nights 2 was pretty damn terrible. I regret pre-ordering it... I mean, for a game it's okay, but series has gone downhill ever since.

Oh, and Guild Wars. Loved it for 3 years, then the "add-on" with 6 hours campaign and recycled armor skins and boring missions + power creep to nth power came along.
I thought NWN2 was actually an improvement. Actual storylines instead of just random gabbling from Aribeth about how depressing it is being the last daughter of Krypton and the like.

For me Guild Wars went to hell during the Korean Beta in November 2004. Before that it was a fun, fairly light, kill things and take their shit with buddies game.

After that it was, you will be killed and eaten if you make one mistake. At launch there was a pair of monk bosses that were almost literally unkillable because they'd heal each other up to full health faster than you could deal damage. And it was completely impossible to kill them if you had any bot party members (they couldn't be assigned to do the focus fire needed to take one down and then the other). Why? Because they rebalanced the PvP in the Korean beta completely and ignored PvE.

Also, Deus Ex. Oh god, Deus Ex. And, although we haven't gotten our hands on it, I'm calling Max Payne 3 one of these.

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion - Elder Scrolls were always the forerunners in Open World RPGs, with Morrowind reaching cult status. Then they put out Oblivion, a game with atrocious controls that should have been scrapped after Daggerfall, zero story, atrocious writing, terrible voice acting, moronic mechanics, a cluttered and poorly designed interface and an open world more boring than a can of spam. They did make up for it a bit with Fallout 3, but I still fear for the Elder Scrolls series...

EDIT: If you're about to quote me and tell me how awesome Oblivion is, don't bother. I understand I'm the minority on that one and let's leave it at that.
haha, too bad. i thought the controls for oblivion were a bit better than morrowind, but that is just my opinion.
The combat was an improvement, it felt less random, and you had more control over how your character developed, but, it came at the expense of a lot of options in who your character was. You're both spot on.

Yeah, thank God they improved the single-player. Too bad they butchered the multiplayer.

Yeah, I should have thrown in that caveat, if you were into NWN for multi, NWN2 was the end of the line. NWN2 is really a single player game with some internet options.

I have a feeling Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy will be mentioned several times here.
First thing that came to my mind when reading the topic title.

With that I agree completely. I was a lot more interested in single player from NwN 2, characters and plot than ones from NwN (except for Hordes of the Underdark ;d).

However, when you make a powerful tool like the Aurora Toolset, it's a shame to waste it all on single-player.

Condemned 2 pretty much dissapointed me with everything, the story just escalated too far.

I know theres others but I can't think of them, Fable 2 but thats too easy and notable.

The change from Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exodus to Munch's Oddysee in the Oddworld series. It's not the 3D that I minded, although that caused most of the problems. It was the fact that they replaced the tricky and fun puzzles of the other two with retarded 'combat' and a health system. A health system, damn it!

Yes you can argue that they were trying a different direction as it was technically a new series, but did they have to do it so badly? Stranger's Wrath proved they could do action perfectly well, so how could they mess up the successor to the sublime Abe's Exodus?

They utterly manglede that game. Everything up to Underground was great. With Need for Speed III as the top.

Everything after that was a dissapointment. New graphics and rubbish gameplay.
THANK YOU

So few people seem to agree with me that NFS3 was the pinnacle of the series. 2 and 4 weren't bad, neither was Hot Pursuit 2. Porsche Unleashed could have been epic, but the gameplay was lacking.

Underground and everything after it sucks. Shift isn't too bad, although the controls are borderline ridiculous.

Mine would have to be the Zelda series. I mean Twilight Princess was okay, a bit of pandering to the fans (but I'm not complaining) was present, but still it was decent. But it's apparent that we will never see a game as strong as OOT or (the golden beacon of games) Majora's Mask.

The Wii motion plus is making sure of that.
Ah! Another well informed and intelligence Majora's Mask lover! I welcome you my brother!

For me it's the Tenchu series. They all died with the creation of the abomination known as Tenchu Z.

Splinter Cell isn't aging well. The games are still good, but they don't feel like Splinter Cell games anymore.

Even then, the Aurora Toolset is a lot easier to use, the Electron (I think) toolset was a bear to work out. You could basically do your design mockup in the engine in NWN, in the second toolset you really needed to know what you wanted before you started.

Spryo, god has it gone downhill ever since Insomniac Games stopped making it...
