The title says it all... The reason I ask is because I find alot of new bands from commercials and tv shows. How do you find new bands that you like?

MySpace (as in I sifted through top 100 metal bands list), satellite radio, friends and sometimes a singer's new band after the old band disbanded.

Oh and few from Rock Band

There's countless ways. Bands I like because my family liked them, my friends recommended them, I saw them live, saw them on TV, heard them in a video game, or advert, or movie, or on Last.fm, y'know. Lots of ways.

I use Spotify it gives you related artists. Also a bit from friends. Actually mostly from friends. (This is not an advertisement from Spotify. I promise.)

I found out about Voltaire from my dad. When I was about 10 or so, my dad played this song to my mum celebrate their wedding anniversary:

I heard the song (and subsequently the whole "Devils bris album") and to this day love Voltaire and that has never changed.

I float around the internet a lot so I tend to hear new music on Jpopasia and Shoutcast. Also what I get recommended from my friends I'll check out.

Mainly the internet. Someone will post a song on a site or I'll happen upon it on Youtube. Although I also find out about bands from random stuff like advertisements or movies.

Sometimes over the radio or Pandora. Occaisionally I'll hear a good song on tv, but mostly it comes from branching out from bands I already like.

Two of them through a commercial on TV.
A few of them through family/friends.
A few through the radio.
A couple through random browsing of "similar" artists.

Furburt here on the Escapist. He lead me to Alestorm which was awesome in itself and lead me to a row of other bands.

Damn, I love that guy.

Most of the artists I like are from episodes of Scrubs. I'll listen to their songs on Spotify and them go through similar artists from there. I've found so many good artists that way and most of my favourite songs.

The amazon recomendation engine is very useful for this sort of thing.

That, and 90% of the negative reviews are people listing off similar bands the reviewer likes better.

In the old days (da 80's) it was all through friends, usually loaning and copying tapes... in fact my first 2 metal albums I ever heard in my life were given to me by a neighbor, Def Leppard Pyromania and Quiet Riot Metal Health... changed my musical life. Since I'm into metal you couldn't hear much on the radio where I grew up, so you only ever got exposed by word-of-mouth. Headbanger's Ball was actually good back then too, before MTV went completely to hell... that's where I first heard Iron Maiden, still my all-time fave. More recently I've discovered all of my favorite European & Power Metal bands through the internet, mostly discussion forums, which I would then hunt down and listen to online, Blind Guardian and Stratovarius being the prime examples there... never would have heard of them otherwise.
