Seriously? If someone's that ridiculously misinformed, I doubt you can convince him of anything with rational argument. Time to break out the barbed-wire wrapped baseball bat.

I can tell my dad is against me playing violent games by the tone he uses when talking about them and not wanting anything to do with them. He can't handle anything other than a joystick and a button. But when I have a conversation like that, I just ask him to give me a solid reason where a stable family has been torn apart by videogames.

To be honest I'm surprised. If your dad really believes that bullshit then why didn't he just make you stop playing? I'm sensing some sort of story behind this one.

My Dad's addicted to Fallout 3 so I can't complain. Except when I can't play it.
I'm kinda torn between wanting your dad, and not wanting him. I can explain if you wish.
o.t. just let it go, there will always be parents who don't want their children doing something for no real reason whatsoever, so figure, forget him

Use sarcasm and reverse psychology.

Dad, i've been playing the gun game for 11 hours straight. And I don't feel like killing people. FUCKING SHOCKING ISN'T IT

Or

Dad since you think this game is so violent why don't you sit down and play it and then tell me if you want to kill people or not. And while your at it define "Evil" for me you selfish bastard.

Can you tell I hate parents like this

I'd rofl if your Dad came to the Escapist.

OT: I'm trying to make my Dad play Halo 3. It shall begin he he he. My friend's dad plays Halo:CE with him. A father-son activity.

So really just say this " Give me 5 different pieces of evidence that will make me a killer then I'll stop for good" That should tick him off.

My dad just tolled me at a young age "this is all fake, if you kill someone in real life, they don't come back" and handed me a copy of Duke Nukem, which we than played for hours. About you and your father, there isn't much you can do. show him child's play or this article: [link]http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/80721-Americas-Army-Training-Helps-Save-Accident-Victims[/link]
either way, it's not going to change is mind, and some people are narrow minded.

Dad: -in a normal, perfectly conversational tone- I hate that game. It's evil.
Me: What?
Dad: It's a game about killing people. It'll make you want to kill people.
Me: No it won't. I'm not that easily influenced.
Dad: It's not about how easily influenced you are. That game will make you evil.
Me: No it won't.
Dad: Yes it will. Games like that make you violent.

Me: I'm not violent!
Dad: Yes you are. You're using a violent tone right now.
Me: so I can't play it anymore?
Dad: You'll stop eventually.
Me: What does that mean?
Dad: Someday you'll understand and stop playing that game. -leaves-
If that was how the conversation went, then there's obviously no reason to even try to reason with the man.

The obvious answer would be "there have really been no tangible evidence, connecting videogames to acts of crime and/or violence", but that probably won't sway his opinion on them.

And that 'violent tone' point is bullshit. I mean, doesn't he raise his tone, when someone criticizes his hobbies or his ideals? That kind of hypocriticy is why I, swear to God, hate my stepmother more than any person I can quite remember right now. He's obviously just some kind of conservative bullshit parent, and as long as that doesn't happen, you should be happy he's just talk, and doesn't really forbid you from playing them.

My dad's always been skeptical about me playing any games with guns in them, and I've always tried to let it go and not get pissed, but today we had a conversation that made me realize I had to do something. I started up Urban Terror, a Quake 3 Arena mod with blood turned off. The conversation went like this:

WARNING: Big wall-o-text
Dad: Is that the gun game?
Me: Yes dad, this is the "gun game"
Dad: -in a normal, perfectly conversational tone- I hate that game. It's evil.
Me: What?
Dad: It's a game about killing people. It'll make you want to kill people.

So have any of you Escapists had a similar experience? And what can I do to change my Dad's mind about video games?
As long hes not stopping you playing the game all he's doing is expressing his opinion and theres nothing wrong with that.

In a way you should respect your dad for not forcing you to stop doing something he doesn't believe is right.

Games do not influence kids. If Pac-Man were influential, we'd all be running around in dark rooms eating pills and listening to techno.

Yes, just a couple days ago in fact. My dad isn't quite so heavy handed in his thoughts, but he definitely believes that too much of anything will make a person insane (games especially). He doesn't believe in my argument of easily influenced/already insane people, but at least he wasn't so quick to shoot it down. Granted, his reasons weren't very valid (or on topic), but at least I know he's not a stupid crusader (I thought he would be)
