What I don't understand, is why don't they just release mouse for consoles. BTW FPS are hard to play on consoles, RTS are impossible.

Personal preference. I had trouble playing Call of Duty at first, but I eventually got used to it and was able to find my target easily. Play on a higher sensitivity, learn it. Reflexes, map knowledge, familiarity of controls, and just being able to center your crosshairs on a target quickly really help a lot.

Me? I tried playing a first person shooter at a friend's house and I found it extremely awkward and difficult to play. It was just so frustrating and felt so foreign/alien to me that I didn't want to practice to get used to it, I just didn't want to touch it again...

I think I like the fact that all the buttons are close enough together on a PS3 controller and there aren't too many of them so, I can just remember where I need to put my finger so Baddie X doesn't get up again.

Also I very rarely get a chance to use my PC these days so my PS3 is all I've got.

Once upon a time, I legitimately thought I hated FPS games. I only played CoD4 on my 360 and I can only remember how frustrating it was. Not only were the people complete assholes, but I could never hit anything to save my life, excluding maybe with a rocket launcher. When I played my first FPS on the PC with a keyboard and mouse, it was an eye opening experience. I could point my crosshair towards what I wanted to hit and my bullets would actually make contact! Granted, I'm not claiming to be the best PC gamer ever, but my mind explodes whenever I hear someone say they prefer to play a FPS with a controller. To me, the pinpoint accuracy of a mouse is infinitely superior to whatever little aim you can attain with a controller's right analog stick. Can someone explain to me how people play these types of games with a controller?
it's not the game it's the lifestyles.

People love the HDTV and Couch combo, how they can kick back an relax which is completely at odds with using keyboard and mouse controls that really do require you sit up straight at a desk.

I started playing shooters on PC and although I CAN play shooters on console with gamepad I am in the same boat as you, it is not an enjoyable experience, it is frustrating. Even after playing close to 30 hours of MW2 alone. I've given it more than enough of a chance.

Frankly I prefer to game at a desk, I like to get as close to the monitor as possible to use my full field of vision and see each pixel for pixel-perfect-precision also only achievable (which speed) using a mouse.

Personally, I do prefer a mouse for aiming, but I prefer the analog stick for movement. The day they find a way to combine those two while still being practical will be a great day for me.

As for how? Some people are just used to it. They grew up on it. And some people, dare I say it... like it. I don't get why PC Gamers have such a hard fucking time understanding this concept. People like different control methods. This isn't rocket science. Different preferences. THAT'S. IT.

Different people have different opinions. I for the life of me can't figure out how PC Gamers can put up with WASD for movement, but you don't hear me going "They must clearly be stupid! They don't do this our way when an analog stick is CLEARLY superior, and anyone who uses WASD is just unskilled!" But whenever it comes to M&K, PC Gamers seem to hear "Different Preferance" and respond "DOES NOT COMPUTE!"

I am a PC gamer, and I often play FPSs on my PC, but the comfort and freedom of having a controller in hand, instead of being slumped over a keyboard and mouse wins it for me.

Also, there was a game that allowed keyboard + mouse for the PS3 [Unreal tourney i think], and while i would like to see this implemented more, its probably not going to happen.

But the aim assist, which was more or less made to lessen the disparity of joystick vs mouse, has contributed alot to the console FPS gaming. I myself prefer to play without it though, as it often leaves me feeling cheated [like the aim assist got the kill, and i was just there for the ride so to speak].

There are some hacks and mods out there, but none of them really work and none of them have any level of official support. If they did make it, I reckon they'd see a drastic change in rankings as the people with mouse/keyboard shoot to the top.

OT: Depends, I guess. I like Halo: Reach, but I can't snipe on it because my thumbs are fat and slow. But in TF2 I play almost exclusively Sniper and regularly place on top of the scoreboard. I guess it's just a matter of how and what you play.

It balances imo. The accuracy of the mouse is counteracted by the inaccuracy of the WASD keys for movement. The inaccuracy of the Analog stick for aiming is balanced by the accuracy of the other analog stick for movement.

In a perfect world you can merge the two. Or play Far Cry 2 which allows the controller and mouse to be used simultaneously.

FPS multiplayer on consoles are terrible, there's so little control with the right stick. no wonder everybody uses auto aim
Who's everybody? I play with people with legitimate skill, calling "HAX!!1!" on someone for being better than you is insane. People use aim bots on PC, even more so than console.
Nearly every console FPS has aim assist to compensate for the fact that a analog stick is no where near as accurate as a mouse.

Personally I can't stand aiming on a console. It's just so inaccurate and sluggish, maybe I would of liked it more if I had turned the sensitivity up a bit.

FPS console games are so much better than PC. I was raised console though. Minus C&C series which I've played since I was a wee lad.

I avoid buying any game of any genre, except fighers, on consoles when possible. Not just FPS's.

Like I said you're on a completely level playing field with everyone else in the game. Adjust sensitivity to how you like, though for sniping a high sensitivity can be brutal.

Personally I like playing FPS games on both PC and consoles. Can't play Halo: Reach on PC, also can't play Unreal on console.

In the top tier competitive environment the best PC player will have the advantage over the best console player but realistically it only comes down to preference.

I prefer the controller since that's what I was brought up on. PC players prefer mouse and keyboard because that's what they're used to. Easy way to spot a PC elitist is if they dismiss any console FPS player as someone just unskilled or not as good as any PC FPS player.
Elitist maybe to say mouse>gamepad

but it's just false to say gamepad>mouse

Please, there have been real proper scientific studies on this. It is a fact.

I take the "elitist" jibes as indicative of just how sensitive and vulnerable console gamers are.

Look, my first gaming experiences were with a gamepad on PS1 and PS2, I am intimately familiar with the interface but I remember back in around 2002 deciding that PC's mouse + keyboard was best for almost every game that has any kind of aiming and shooting. More recently I really tried to give FPS games like MW2 on consoles a chance and they just aren't as fun.

Playable, yes. But I've had better.

I'm not "top-tier" by any standard, the mouse is just a much more responsive (direction change), much faster and much more precise all at the same time. This is way more than preference.

Why is it that PC gamers ALL say that mouse+Keyboard are better and console gamers all say it's down to preference?

i had a similar thought recently. i was playing just cause 2 and couldnt hit anything. the game seems to have a sort of auto target system but it doesnt work great. i could only beat red dead redemption because of lock on targeting but the one or two times when the lock on mechanic didnt work (due to bugs or turret sections) i was completely lost. i have to assume that the people who can aim easily with a controller are some sort of accuracy gods or a video game playing robot. this is why i dont play console shooters but ive been meaning to pick up this so i can finally play resistance and various other ps3 shooters that have been collecting dust

from what i heard, it works pretty well, in general

I used to be a diehard mouse/keyboard supporter. But after 3 years with a ps3 over a new gaming computer, I am now just as good with a controller and my hand cramps if I use wasd too much...

Oh well, just a preference.

The console market is basically going the wrong direction, using a controller that doesn't allow for very good aiming - and this is managed by a help main system making the overall experience even less tactical. It goes against the very purpose of FPS, and I don't see how it could appeal to anything else than, dare I say... causal gamers!
