Give them change. Though, only because the local council, who are filthy labourites (ding dong the Brown is gone! ^^), have decided to put up signs saying "don't give change to beggars".

Oh yeah, I'm a rebel! >=)

Hmm, do as the cops do, give them a gun and make them fight crime. We need more hobo-Batman´s that are like Ethan Thomas.

I give them the keys to my house and then badger them incessantly for change.

They learn to leave me be.

lol, didn't realize the homeless had to be 'dealt with'.
If some guy in rags approaches you, demands or politely asks for change, how'd you handle the situation with the supposedly homeless person

That's what I meant, if you misunderstood me.

I may give them some change if they simply have a sign or are doing something entertaining. If they pester me about it though they are now getting anything.

why not give companies tax incentives to keep manufacturing in the US? all that raising import taxes would do is hurt the consumers.
Not really. Companies will have a huge tax incentive to make the same things on US soil if we put a huge tax on importing items. Consumers still get the same second-rate crap they always got, from the same companies they got them from, but now they're built in the US instead of in China so if it blows up in their face again there's actually someone to sue.

Hell 90% of the cars you see on the road were built here in America. Don't get too confused because it's a Japanese company.

We wouldn't tax the hell out of a foreign company if they decided to set up manufacturing here in the US, and we would tax the hell out of Ford if they decided to start manufacturing Mustangs in Japan for some reason.

There would be one notable exception, though. Oil. And that's only because we can't produce enough of it in our own country to sustain ourselves at any price, let alone a nice comfy price. American wells are just too dry to produce enough oil for us. Though the wells we do have operating could be given serious incentives to sell the oil here in the US...

a tax is force, not an incentive. more than likely, all it would do is have them raise prices on consumers. they can get the cheap labour of indonesia or wherever, and just raise consumer prices to account for the increased taxes. lets say they do come back to the US due to the tax, then they would also have to pay increased wages. prices for consumers would go up then as well.

giving tax cuts to companies that keep manufacturing in the US, or move it to the US, would allow them to account for the increased wages of american workers, while keeping prices at their normal level.

I try not to be too harsh on them. If I didn't have parents to fall back on I'd very likely have been homeless myself out of Uni with no job.

I never would have got the job I have now if I'd been homeless and I'd have been stuck there.

I don't carry fucken cash! Why you need cash? Aint this the plastic age?

Even if I have money on me, I don't give. I pay 38% taxes. I've given enough already.
You givers make sure they get their high. My money is the reason they're still alive.
Next time they OD or near freeze to death in the snow, it's my fucken money making sure the ambulance runs.

/rant off

*edit*
To clarify, the "homeless" people where I live are junkies and drunks. They have fucken housing provided to them by the county.
Guess who pays for that?

In Brisbane they always come up to you and ask for "food" money. This is when they have better clothes on than me. In Australia it's normally someone choice to be homeless due to our dole support system being what it is. It's really hard to find someone who is truely homeless due to not having enough money. Most of them are drug addics who aren't very good at money management. So I just stare at them after they ask me just to check if the next person they ask is ok because they can be quite intimating having a 6" foot person standing over you.

Give them change, it's not like he's asking for your credit card or wallet, just show a little compassion for someone in a rough place and spot him a couple bucks.

And before someone goes and says "BUT HE'LL SPEND IT ON DRUGS OR BOOZE!!!!!?!?!!!?!?!?!"

Who cares? That's his problem, not mine. Besides, in the end, does it really matter that you gave a homeless man a couple dollars just to help him, even if he buys a crack rock or bottle of liquor with his collected money, it doesn't matter. Like I said, it's his problem, and now it's his money.

Also, I do know that lots of homeless folks do buy food with collected money.

If they ask for money for say, food, then I'll offer to buy them a meal (and not just a burger if I can avoid it). If they agree, then I'll buy them the meal. If they refuse the food, they don't get squat. Then I'll try and see if I can get him/her to one of the shelters. My history teacher showed us an interesting video showing how a lot of homeless people actually make out fairly well off of the kindness of others who, as the representative from the shelter called "enablers" and that they didn't actually help.

I tell them the truth. I need the money in my pocket to buy food or a buss ticket for my self.

Most of the streets here are crowded enough that homeless people don't single you out. That in mind I generally just avoid interaction that revolves around me giving them money, mostly because I'm broke myself. But there is the odd homeless person that will sit on the steps of the liquor store and beg; I find it rather hilarious people actually give him money - he just walks into the store and buys whatever will knock him out quickest.

The few that have begged money from me I have usually given, after at least making sure they promise it's not going to go on drugs or alcohol.

I would TRY to avoid them, but if I have to, I'll give them change :/
