I will generally offer food, or a blanket. Things like that. Though once i got food thrown at me by a drunk that had asked for food x.x' apparently he only wished for money, and knew if he asked for food most will give money.

it depends how they act towards me, I know some homeless who are pretty awesome people, and I wouldn't hesitate to help them, thing is, they never ask.

They tend to be people who make more then enough money to get by at the bottom and are quite happy with that. Usually the brighter ones among them, and sometimes the more crazy ones.

On the other hand if I get some dickhead pushing me for something I will be a dick right back.

I actually had some one dude... well never mind but someone tried to hustle me and I didn't much like it. I let them know.

Give them my money so they can get some booze, ya not going to happen.
And that's definitly not what you were going to spend your money on?
I'm not begging for money on the fucking street corner.
I already pay for them when the government takes a chunk from pay check.
That's not entirely pertinent.

People like to think that they wouldn't end up the same way as these people, given the same circumstances. It just occurs to me, that maybe I would be unemployable if I had spent my formative years being abused, violently or sexually...whatever...I just think it may have affected my ability to concentrate in maths class. Hell, I come from a nice background and I still squandered my eduaction with a generally indifferent disposition.

I don't think reasons for being homeless, or what they spend any money given to them on, is really anyones business. Give or don't give, either is cool with me, let's just not be judgemental.
Thats true, and I am back peddling but I came off as kind of a dick. Maybe I should take a walk in the shoes of some one who has lost everything and basically gives up. But from my mind I wouldn't be begging on the streets, I would be picking up scrap metal or going through trash for recyclable material to sell. Making a sign and waving it in my face is lazy and shows no intuitive for the matter at hand. Thats my view on the matter anyway, sorry for coming off as a dick.

Well, aren't you lovely.

First of all, it's extremely arrogant of you to assume the homeless are all alcoholics. I wouldn't begrudge anyone a drink anyway, homeowner or not.

Second of all, nothing out of your paycheck goes to individual people on the street. Donating to a shelter or giving change to someone is a voluntary act of charity.

Thirdly, I checked your profile, and you're just a kid. You probably have a paper round or some shit, and you certainly don't pay tax. Don't even dare to sit there, in front of the computer that your parents probably bought for you, espousing that bullshit as if you actually deserve anything more than these people. Not everyone is as priviledged or as lucky as you, and you *are* priviledged and lucky.
But I have some issues with you.
I am 17, bit more than a kid but that doesn't matter. You say because I am a kid I don't work, wrong. I work in a kitchen during summer vacation, and it sucks. have you ever worked in a kitchen on a 95f day, the kitchen is almost 10f-15f hotter than the outside environment. Ever work the dish pit in 115f? It sucks.
It is also arrogant to assume that because of my age I can't work my ass off for my money.
On the check thing, you are right, none of my money goes to a specific person, but I never said that.
Like I said above, its the fact that there are many ways to make money if one really needs it, making a sign or asking me is lazy in my eyes.
Am I privileged? Fuck yes I am. Did my dad pay all for my computer, no I payed for half and it was a Christmas gift but I am very blessed to have a dad that works his ass off to be able to afford what we are able to afford. I may be spoiled with things I have, but I would never take it for granted because I see the shit people do to make a living and be able to enjoy it.

the only time I am around the homeless is at school. This university has things called, "swipes" in place of money for food. Therefore, I either don't have money on me, or tote around a debit with this swiping card. I don't have to lie, i really dont' have any change.

In all seriosness, I do not go into the city enough or anywhere the homeless are in, so I haven't found myself ever needing to "deal" with the homeless.

Some of the answers here are hilarious. Some of you just don't understand that homeless people are ex social workers, electricians, IT professionals, teachers... There's this misconception that the homeless are homeless through some fault of their own- because they're lazy or dropped out. There's a similar misconception that getting out of homelessness is as easy as getting a job. That's ridiculous. We are, every one of us, extremely vulnerable to the same situation at all times; and once you're in that situation, it's very difficult to get out.

Have you ever had a job without being able to supply an address?
Can you get an address without having a job? Of course you bloody can't.

Homelessness is just the other side of your front door. If you're only prepared to be charitable to the ones who can "do tricks", you're actually quite sick.

In the past I've bought them lunch. Being homeless is terrible, but I won't abide by people using my generosity to pay for their habit. That's how you tell how serious they are. If they turn down lunch, they just want drug money. If they do however take you up on it, it's usually a decent time. I like listening to people's stories.
The whole drug money thing is really stereotypical. Drugs and Alcohol is the 4th leading cause of homelessness, they aren't all just looking to get their fix.

OT: It depends on a few factors: How bad they look, how polite they are, and if I think they got themselves into their situation. Like, I always give money to the homeless guy yelling "Eat 'em up Tigers, eat 'em up!" at Detroit Tigers games, but I don't give money to the guy in a new Northface jacket with brand new nikes who says he just lost his job (true story)

That may be, but it doesn't really make what I said any less relevant. Chances are, if a homeless person turns down me buying them lunch, then they probably didn't need it in the first place.

Little side story...

I saw a man one time with a sign that read "Need money for beer and pot" I gave him five bucks. Not that I really support either of those two things, but I really appreciated his honesty.

Kill them and dress them in army attire, forming my own private army under my floor boards (very obscure reference).

I would have done that as well. Excellently acted, dear sir.

Homeless and beggars are a completely different thing. I dont give money to beggars, they have to earn it, just like I had to.

I usually try and ignore them. I know that most of the homeless people around my town just go and spend it on drugs or cigarettes, so I don't think it's worth giving them anything.
Sure, I'm probably generalising, but I like being a stuck-up jerk. So there.

I gave money to a homeless once. Half an hour later he was in the shop buying beer. From that day on I refuse to give money to any homeless person.

Damn ninja's......
But yeah, I don't really give stuff to 'beggars' unless they're asking for water, food, or something substantial because I don't know the person. For all I know, if I give them money, they could be using it to shoot up on drugs like heroine. If i am busy though I may just give them ten bucks.
Being homeless is often largely misunderstood by those of us who have spent the majority of our lives sheltered in stable environments. not just misunderstood, but grossly over exaggerated in it's hopelessness. Not having a house doesn't mean you can't have a life. plenty of people travel all over the world without ever having a permanent lodging. many homeless are totally capable people, many with far more work experience than you or I. if those types want money, they had better well earn it.
