How do you drink coffee?

Believe it or not, I'm 21 and have just today tried my first ever cup of coffee. Yeah, I know I'm late on the bandwagon, but what can I say? For years, coffee was just as inaccessible and forbidden to me as drugs (Well, just as forbidden anyways). So I stopped in Starbucks and decided to just start basic: a regular coffee (brown) with no cream, sugar, or nothing.

As I'm sure some most of you would guess, I highly regretted that.

I mean I know coffee is supposed to be bitter, but DAMN! That was like the only word I could possibly use to describe it. I'm certainly never trying that particular idea again. Obviously I need to add something or start with a different kind of blend. What do you guys recommend? What's a good starting point?

Also, this is partly for homework. I'm writing a paper on coffee, and since I'm supposed to do some hands-on research, this just seemed like the obvious thing to do. I'm not looking to become a full-time coffee drinker, but I want to give it another shot before I write it off.

I drink my coffee black and strong.
Like a man.

It's an acquired taste though.
I suggest eating some sweets with the coffee. The warm bitterness of the coffee neatly complements the cool, sugary sweetness of cake or some other pastry.

What do I recommend as a starting point?
Get yourself a french press and some ground coffee beans. I hear the connaisseures grind their own beans, but I figure you might not want to invest in a grinder of your own.
Make sure that the grounds have the right ground size. If you buy grounds intended for drip brewing, they will seep through the filter in the press can and enter your coffee. That's not nice.

I tried an americano from Starbucks once.
That was the weakest cup of coffee I've ever tasted. And there was practically half a liter of it. I suppose the taste was okay though.

But if you really don't like coffee, use milk and/or sugar.
Even back when I didn't like coffee, a cup with 5 teaspoons of sugar was awesome.

Milk, TONNES of sugar, with whipped cream on top sprinkled with chocolate shaving and drizzled with caramel...

Yum yum.

You could also try desert coffee, with Baileys and/or Kahlua.

You can wake me any day or night for a hot steaming cup of mochaccino with LOADS of sugar.

Hmmmmmm... I'm going to make myself some right now :D

All of this, so much.

Also, if you want to try the Starbucks idea again, you should try one of their pumpkin spice lattes. Assuming the barista knows what they're doing and doesn't skimp on the flavoring, it's one of the best drinks they make, by far.

They also used to make something called an espresso truffle, which was also amazing, but it seems to be gone now.

Other companies make better coffee, but Starbucks does a great job with the flavoring. (As does the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.)

I would just start with milk and pour until you like it, if you still need to lessen the bitterness, but add sugar until it's to your liking.

After that, then you can get creative, like adding chocolate so you can have a mocha!

First off, if you weren't 'allowed' to drink coffee until now, what on Earth possessed you to walk in to Starbucks! Horrible for many, many reasons.
My coffee?
1. Try 1/2 caff (ony 1/2 the caffine so you don't get the shakes, like you did with that Starbucks tar)
2. French Vanilla creamer.
3. Stir and enjoy.

My choice is Latte, 2 sugars.

If you want to try it again though, just get a regular coffee with milk and sugar. See if you like it or not.

Oh, I've been 'allowed' for a few years now (Not that my parents would suddenly approve, but what I do is no longer their concern), I just never think of it. Like I said, pretty much the only reason I decided to try it today was for homework purposes.

I don't drink coffee. It just isn't for me.

The smell makes me sick enough. I don't need the taste as well.

I actually rather enjoy the smell...or at least I did. Now all I can smell is the bitterness, which I didn't even think was scent until now.

Instantly made me think of this XD http://www.beaverandsteve.com/comics/BnS_338.png

Incidentally I drink coffee with milk two sugars and through a straw to the bemusement of most. I like the taste but the feel on my front teeth puts me on edge if I don't have access to a toothbrush.

Strong and black *insert male sexuality preference joke here*.

If you were just starting out though, Starbucks was probably a bad place to begin. Doubly so with plain black coffee.

Find a coffee loving friend and have them make you a cafetiere coffee, nice and milky. Goes well with a cigarette if that's your thing, if not just go straight.

And for the love of god, please do not turn into one of the people who struts into a Starbucks and orders a coffee which takes longer to say than to drink. Coffee should be a) simple and b) cheap.

When I was young my parents never let me have caffeine. None at all.

They never drank coffee, and so I never drank coffee. IT's just something my body cannot handle. Plus, I have sleep apnea, so any amount of caffeine can keep me up all night.

Easy way to get used to coffee: drink a canadian tradition, the Double-double.

Two shots of milk, two packets of sugar.

Eventually, you can wean off the sugar, then the milk.

As you get used to the flavour of the coffee (and the bitterness), you'll need the sugar less and less.

is it ok if my order is long because I'm simplifying the drink?
