Alot of you are right, alot of anime is some complete garbage, but there are some gems in there. I personally like alot of the stuff from studio Gainax, like FLCL and Gurren Lagann. I personally can't stand alot of the crummy high school crap, and I do understand a little of the facial expressions argument. I'm glad this thread is getting some discussion and varied input.

I am a fan of anime. There is a lot of good and a lot of bad in the genre, just as any other art form. What I really like about anime is that it is just another form of expression to the Japanese, whereas in America, animation is considered solely for children. This does seem to be slowly changing, especially with computer animated movies becoming more mainstream, but most Americans would still consider any standard animation as just "cartoons" without regard to the content of the show. We can see the same issue with comic books and how until I think the late 80's they were generally considered just for kids, but now with the term "graphic novel" they are more acceptable by adult audiences.

Sometimes I wonder about the overlap between the gaming community and the anime fan populace. How do YOU feel about anime? I personally like alot of it, but by no means is it superior to animation from any other country. What are some favorite anime of yours, forum-goers?
I used to like it heaps, but now I'm pretty much over it. I got into anime when the moe phase was starting up, and I cant stand that shit. Most of the anime being made now I feel is not worth my time, the last one i remember watching was eden of the east and that was alright. Now I dont have the energy i used to to sort through the shit to find out what I like.

Personally, I'm content with waiting for the next Neon Genesis movie, that series has a special place in my heart.

Studio Ghibli and Cowboy Bebop are about as far down the rabbit hole as I'm willing to go. No offense to anybody present, but the fanbase has repelled me from getting into it.
None taken, some of us can indeed be pretty crazy. Besides, I'm also driven away from WH40k for the same reason, even if some of it can be good with the right attitude.

On topic, between being an admin in the anime fans group, being the resident Nanoha fanboy, and some of my Netflix choices, I'd say I'm a fan. Obviously I don't just watch anything, since nothing this season caught my interest and I consider Ikki Tousen(sp?) a personal insult, but there's still plenty of stuff out there if you look around, and I recommend Kino's Journey to anyone.

For all of you who won't give it a chance, though, I have an article a friend of mine wrote that I think is relevant to this thread.

I love anime, though I don't love it as much as I used to. I may grow out of it someday but it will be a long while before that happens.

Hate it, it's so cheap, so tacky, the pace is far too slow in some. One Piece, and DragonBall spring to mind. Each episode is 22 mins, 3 mins intro song, 3 mins recap of what happened in the last episode, so only about 14 mins is on the actual episode, 2 mins for outro song too.

I like it... (the good stuff, anyway), but I like western animation pretty much the same way, so... yeah!

EDIT:

I like it, but I sort of find most of the people that watch it annoying in large groups.
