How do you like this new trend of releasing HD versions of old games?

I like them purely for the fact that there are some great games I didn't play on their original release/lifespan, such as the Ico games, and the Jak and Daxter games. I prefer to buy a new collection to play on my more predominantly used consoles (i.e. my newer consoles) as I don't have a lot of space to setup old consoles where I live. Plus I'd prefer to buy a copy of a game that supports the devs and publishers rather than tracking down a used copy of the original on ebay. Not to mention sometimes older games become rare and expensive. I'd rather get the live arcade download of Castlevania SoTN than spend £80 on the original PS1 version. As much as I do like owning physical copies more, it's a big price gap that dominates my decision.

I am okay with it, but I do wish to see them go further with things. The biggest disappointment about Halo Anniversary was that it played exactly the same as Halo 1. When I already have that. I would have loved to see how implementing new material from the later games would affect the gameplay in Halo 1. Brutes making you rethink certain areas, Drones fighting in close quarters on levels like Truth and Reconciliation. Armor abilities.
I'm really hoping they do something like that for Halo 2.
Last I heard is that they are "not currently working on Halo 2 Anniversary" because they are "kinda busy"

OT: I like HD remakes, expesically when they are in a convenient collection.

I like it when they're actually HD, and not crappy ports.

You know, like SH 'Collection'...
Which only had SH2/3.

As long as they're done well (Silent Hill collection *shakes fist*).
Apart from not being an actual collection, what did Silent Hill Collection do wrong?

I like that it made Shadow of the Colossus playable for me. Before, the combination of herky-jerky movements, shitty frame rate, and horrendous anti-aliasing made me feel physically ill when I tried to play it. So yeah, I was actually able to finally play that game. Didn't think it was amazing, but it was pretty good. Agro does control like ass, though.

Other than that, I like that it gives me a chance to play games that I missed. This is especially good for me because I skipped out on the entire PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation during high school and my first year of college.

Well, generally speaking I don't think it's a new trend for new games to be released in an HD format. So I can't say I really mind it.

Oh, wait, you meant HD versions of old games, didn't you?

Well, I've bought Okami HD despite still owning a working copy of the PS2 version, same story with the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus collection, and I've bought the Metal Gear Solid collection.

So no, I don't mind that either.

Basically Konami lost the original code for the game somehow so they made the HD versions out of a half finished bit of code.

The HD makeover was superficial at best, they made changes to the game's atmosphere, specifically the fog, which they almost entirely removed, making the game look uglier, and they did a poor job of optimizing the games for current gen, because framerate issues and lag were abundant.
That, and of course, it's not a collection if you only have two titles in it.

But... everyone knows the Konami Code!

I like them when they're actually high definition redesigns of the games, like Black Mesa to Half-Life, the Halo Anniversary Edition and Tomb Raider Anniversary. Take an old classic and bring it to a modern audience.

But when the "HD" is literally just "hey you can run it with HD resolutions now", what's the point? Other than just to resell old stuff like a rebranded video card?

I like the ideas when it is done well, case in point being the ICO & Shadow of Colossus remakes. Not only did it take two somewhat hard to find games and put them onto one disk, placing it back in the spotlight for a generation that may have forgotten or never even noticed it, it was even kind enough to add a digital disk of bonus features (behind the scenes whatsits).

I would certainly pay money for something that did that with all the old Lucasarts adventure games, oh but that's a good laugh indeed, we'd sooner see a remake of Beneath a Steel Sky. Er. A better remake, anyway.

I know it's not HD, but I really liked what they did for the original Resident Evil when it got re-released on the GameCube with a graphics overhaul. I'd like to see more of that for older games that haven't aged well.

I'd especially like it if they include the originals... but that'd just be icing.

Yeah, I heard that too. But now that Halo 4 is out, they better get busy on Halo 2. It is in desperate need of a remake.

I don't see much point in releasing a low definition version of a new game...

I know that's not what you're talking about, but that's what your title is, so here's the answer you wrote for.
What are you talking about?

Bethesda gave us an HD pack for Skyrim at no cost at all. All the other studios that actually try to make you pay can suck it.

If it means I can revisit Oddworld and have it look gorgeous then I'm all for it.

Also Ico HD. Anyone know if they're doing a HD Shadow Of The Colossus?

I like them enough that I was able to ignore most of big releases like Skyrim and Mass Effect 3. Ico&SotC, God of War, MGS collection, Sly collection, Jak Collection are all games I bought most recently.

Its good thing too. I missed out on entire last generation.
