How do you like this new trend of releasing HD versions of old games?

I'm only for it in cases where the game looks so ancient, it's a turn off.

Like Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped? That doesn't need an HD remake. That games graphics are just as good now as they were back then. I could play it now with out any visual turn off.

Go back and play Metal Gear Solid 1? That's a little tougher. Gameplay is there, story is there but... I mean I've been spoiled with HD, it's hard to go back. I don't understand how they released a MGS HD pack and not released Twin Snakes with it.

I mean, visually, MGS2 and 3 hold up.

Conversely I still want to pick up the HD release of Bully because they added new clothing items to it.

Love the idea because now I can play Jak and Daxter again. Didn't have a backwards compatible ps3, so this was really the only way to get it. See no real harm in it.

I WANT:
Star Wars Battlefront 2 for 360 and PS3 (or the next generation of consoles)

OT:
Yeah, I generally like the refurbished versons of games better than nothing. (though i guess developers could be working on original games instead)

I like it, it gives me an incentive to buy old games that: a) I never had chance to play fully when they first came out (b) Buy games that I no longer have and enjoy them again.

"Unnecessary" is the first word that comes to mind. But all in all I'm fine with it, but doubt I'll buy any of them as long as I still have my old copies.

I can barely tell the difference between the old Okami and the HD release, which I think is a testament to how well it's artstyle has aged. And hey, anything that makes more people throw money at the Okami creators is a plus in my book.

For the ANCIENT ones, back when you could have like...3 or 4 polygons on screen at maximum, it makes more sense. PS2 and Gamecube releases don't really need it that badly.

I like them enough that I was able to ignore most of big releases like Skyrim
Mass Effect 3 is sure worth missing, but do check out Skyrim (and it's predecessor, Oblivion, while we're at it).

Captcha: eat out. What the?..
I did eventually check out Skyrim. I found it to be kind of dull. But I do plan on getting GOTY for (REALLY) good price.

Capcha: Crunchy Nut "It's Super Delicious"

I guess they're going with certain theme.

They're like everything else: they're good if they're executed right. When it's a way to bring in new fans or to offer new things to old fans, then it's great. However, it can always go wrong (glares angrily at Silent Hill HD).
I've been enjoying Doom 3: BFG Edition as of recent. It's a breath of fresh air to have a game with a campaign that's LONGER than 6 hours, plus Ressurection of Evil and The Lost Missions, all for 40 bucks.
Then again, I am a huge sucker when it comes to Doom.

My only problem is with the price tag. A lot of these remakes are released at full price, which, for a graphical update to a game I probably own, is far too steep. Furthermore, any gameplay quirks due to age tend to not get removed in order to avoid pissing off fans, which makes the final product inferior. Overall, I approve of the trend, is it's always fun to see an old favorite get a new paint job, but it's also highly problematic.

I like it. As someone who didn't really get into gaming until about 5 or 6 years ago, it gives me the opportunity to play games I would have otherwise missed out on.

I certainly don't mind, lets me get all the games in a series without having to look around for individual copies of each one. That being said:

Dear Sony or whoever,

Please make an HD collection of all the .Hack games. They would have to print more money just for there to be enough for me to throw at you.

Sincerely, Tartarga.

I am okay with it, but I do wish to see them go further with things. The biggest disappointment about Halo Anniversary was that it played exactly the same as Halo 1. When I already have that. I would have loved to see how implementing new material from the later games would affect the gameplay in Halo 1. Brutes making you rethink certain areas, Drones fighting in close quarters on levels like Truth and Reconciliation. Armor abilities.
I'm really hoping they do something like that for Halo 2.
Last I heard is that they are "not currently working on Halo 2 Anniversary" because they are "kinda busy"

OT: I like HD remakes, expesically when they are in a convenient collection.
Yeah, I heard that too. But now that Halo 4 is out, they better get busy on Halo 2. It is in desperate need of a remake.
Agreed. Maybe they could have a team do Halo 2, and another team do Halo 5. It's perfect.

Did they at least add a full screen co-op campaign view? Or is it still split screen? I was considering getting that despite already owning several copies of Halo 1. Yeah, I know, but I bought them for LAN parties.

As someone who missed out on last gen, this is really perfect for me and they are at a great price.

Also does anyone know if the zone of the enders collection is good? I keep hearing that it looks really bad on the PS3. I'm wondering if they will patch it or something

Bethesda gave us an HD pack for Skyrim at no cost at all. All the other studios that actually try to make you pay can suck it.
that HD pack kept making my game crash every 2 minutes into the game and when it didn't everything looked like it was smothered in pink frosting

I think it's a brilliant idea. Gives a new lease on life for old games, especially good for if you missed out on them the first time.

I have no real problem with it, but expecting full price for it is a bit unfair (although they practically do that with CoD, except it's less of an improvement), and there is a certain value to playing a game as it was meant to be played. Of course, with the graphics we have now, some practically lose all immersion, and some are on obsolete consoles or unfindable, but with modern games that is less of a problem. Basically it's a bit of life support, something that will make a tidy profit if it has enough of a following, is risk-free, but also possibly delivers something other than generic action-shooter. It's like the safe alternative to making a unique game.

I know what you mean. I was recently playing Halo 2 on my 360 and although it worked, it was certainly not designed for hi-def TVs. The darks were so dark I couldn't see where I was going half the time. You can imagine how that was on the Arbiter levels. lol.

Actually what kills me about that game, and this bothered me even back then, was the draw distance.

If you go to, say Blood gulch, and walk along till you see a rock come into view in the long distance... it's weird, it's not like it just "appears" but it kinda fades in with all these pixelated dots.

My answer depends on what is in the collection.

If an HD collection adds new things to the game besides a face lift and a new level or 2 then I feel it would be worth it. On the other hand most HD collections don't add anything and aren't worth my time. If they were games that are hard to find or just obscure bare minimums could be worth it as it wouldn't feel like "and I didn't buy this for the ps2 (they all seem to be on ps2) why?"
