How do you "lose" the game case?

This has bothered me for some time now. I'm sure you've all experienced it. You go to buy a used game and it is only the disc. It doesn't come with the case or the manual. Just the disc.

How does this happen? How do you "lose" the case? The manual I can understand a little more (but just leave it in the case when you aren't using it!) but the case? How does that work?
I had a friend who worked in a used game store and he said that he'd even heard of people just throwing away the case. This is something else I don't understand. Why would you do that?

So that is what I ask you, Escapist. How do you lose the case? Why would you even throw it away? o_O
I can't be the only one that is annoyed to no end by this. When I buy a used game, I don't want just the disc. I guess that's one of the cons to buying used, but it still doesn't make sense to me. Leave the disc in the case and when you trade in the game, include the case with it. Maybe to some people it just isn't that easy, though. Or something like that.

Maybe they just wanted to keep the glorious case all to themselves?

OT: I've never lost a game case before, though I have lost the game. Poor matrix game, I'll never be able to play you again...

Oh, and that one Yugioh game I had... Oh well.

Maybe they have kids and hey broke it while the disc is in the console or pc?

I usually won't buy it if it comes with one of those Gamestop generic cases. I can deal with a few scratches and even maybe a missing manual, but without the case... no.

I honestly can't say how or why people would throw out the game cases. I certainly never have... in fact, (big OCD alert) I alphabetize my games in my tv cabinet. Now how would I do that if I didn't have all that pretty box art?

Then again, I have bought used games that were so badly scratched up that they didn't play and I had to bring them back. Honestly, I don't understand how or why people mishandle the actual game disk that badly. If they mistreat the actual game that badly, I can only imagine what they did to the poor, plastic case.

How it happends to me is perfectly logical and reasonable. The walls, the floors, the cieling, indeed the entire house is alive and punishes me through the taking and hiding of game cases and other actions because it sectretly works for god who's constantly pissed at my high masturbation rate, anger, and sick mind and tells my house to annoy and pester me so. Like I said, perfectly logical and reasonable.

One thing that causes that is if it came from a rental place originally, for example. Some of them don't keep the cases or manuals to save space in storage, and if you buy the game from them, you just get the disc, and if you re-sell that later on, that's all you have. I've also seen people who keep all the discs in a CD/DVD binder/wallet, also to save space and to keep stuff organized how they like it. And yes, you really can just lose it. If your house is cluttered and you have a short attention span, you can set it down after taking the game out and never see it again, particularly if there are kids or pets around. It never happens to me (I still have the cardboard boxes half my NES and SNES games came in, even), but I've seen plenty of weird stuff happen to people's games over the years, both intentionally and not.

One of the cool things about games is the case and instruction book that comes with it. Now, they could give the game and the case, but it really will not make much a difference on the money they are given for trading in the game. With that in mind, what incentive do they have in mind to give up the case and the instruction booklet, other than maybe courtesy? I figure, some people might just keep the case and instruction booklet just as a cool keepsake. I don?t know why someone would want to keep them because it won?t do much good, but that is probably why there are used games without the casing or booklet.

Also, there are cases where the case and the booklet might be in bad condition. Some might be all scratched up and might have become damaged in some way. The game might be fine, but the casing itself might be un-presentable so it would be best to not give the case and just give the disk.

Still, I agree that it is always nicer to get a game with everything it came with, but not getting everything is one of the possibilities when you buy used. Still, you are saving a bit of money, which might let you buy more games in the end. Anyway, that is why I think cases and booklets aren?t with used games. I don?t know for a fact that that is right, but hey, I just like giving my input.

I dunno... from what I can tell, when people are slobs, they tend to leave things in places, things find their way under couches and whatnot... and they just go missing. My brother and I were pretty terrible for that as kids.

I think there are alot of reasons that make sense, Maybe they lent the game and the friend lost the case while they were playing with it?

It got lost through redecorating, It got broke through an accident, generally untidy room and misplaced it, found it after selling etc.

I don't know how the fuck I managed it, but I cannot find my Ratchet and Clank 3 disc! I had the urge to play it one day and the case and manual were there, and no disc!

Steven is unremarkable. As is his friend Michael.

Steven: Dude, where's the case for this game?

Michael: Over there du--

There is a flash. Nicola Tesla astride his robot spider crashes through the room.

Nicola Tesla: Blasted Edison! You there, kind sir, what is the Queen's date?

Nicola Tesla: Blast! I must go.

And THAT is why they lose game cases.
Yep, that's exactly what happened.

Alternatively, they could either keep all their games in some sort of folder of disc jackets or something, or you lose the case but keep the game because it was in your system or something.

I understand getting rid of those old cardboard gameboy game cases, and I can even buy throwing away the case for DS games, since Nintendo makes so many game pouches, and it's more convinent to have one of them for a handheld than it is to carry around the game cases, but I've never understood how so many used games are only the disc. I used to buy used PS1 games and I always remember getting the case, even though those things seemed a hell of a lot more delicate than these new cases, with their smooth corners so the kids don't cut themselves opening it. That was part of the fun of opening games back in the day. You either got tougher skin or you learned not to get cut! And don't get me started on today's manuals. Aren't even worth the paper their printed on!

...Excuse me, my inner indignate older gamer got out again.
