I am sick of many good escapists getting banned, I have compiled a list of things to not to get banned. "But who are you to say what to Evil Smurf?" You might say, I would reply; "A user who has learnt from his mistakes."

0. Don't be an arsehole Thanks SlaveNumber23.
1. Don't touch the word troll
2. Don't be rude, even if the above poster is an arsehole, BE NICE!
3. REPORT (Trolls and other bastards) and MOVE ON!
4. If you can say something in more words, do it. Additionally Stay on topic.
User X: What do think of cake?User Y: yes
So you are User Y, what should you have done? This:

User X: What do think of cake?User Y: I like Flourless orange Cake, it is so orangey and moist!
4.5. Merely adding "Extra words to avoid mod's wrath" to a low content post does not avoid a mod's wrath. Thanks madwarper.
4.75 Don't just add a picture and not back it up. For example
User X: What do think of cake?User Y:
http://mopies.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/portal-cake.jpg
So you are User Y, what should you have done? This:

User X: What do think of cake?User Y: I like Flourless orange Cake, it is so orangey and moist!, <spoiler=Although the last cake I ate was this one>http://mopies.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/portal-cake.jpg
5. Don't endorse/admit to piracy or use of adblocking software
6. Don't Troll people: don't make a topic or post solely for reactions
7. Don't Post just to get a hight post count, so don't double post on purpose. This goes for user groups, and all forums.
8. If you disagree with someone, don't fight them!
9. Saying something like "All EA haters are idiots.", "Your religion is a lie" Or "ALL BRONIES ARE GAY!" Will get mod wrathed, Never personally attack someone, or insult a specific group or person. It always ends badly. Thanks Lucem713 and mysecondlife
10. If you're being sarcastic and it's not immediately obviously to everyone, then make it more obvious. Some people will take you seriously and may get offended.
11. The more warnings you have, the easier it is to get another warning. When you have one more warning=banning then you are walking on the THINNEST ice. Very minor infractions that wouldn't earn a warning for people without any can earn you a final one leading to your being banned. Thanks Copper Zen
12. Do not present a binary where both options insults the user/a group.Examples (slightly altered versions of posts that have gotten people in trouble):
Exhibit A said:
He/she is either too stupid to get it or too dishonest to admit he/she is wrong.
Exhibit B said:
Are you really this dumb or are you just trolling?
Thanks Hjalmar Fryklund

13. Do not call for attacks on a user. Thanks Hjalmar Fryklund
14. Do not Ban Jump: this means making another account after a suspension or ban.
15. It's a bad idea to pretend your post got moderated when it didn't. You might just evoke the wrath of the mods. Thanks ChristopherRobin
16. Do not threaten a user with violence, emotional trauma, harrassment, or other types of bullying thanks Hjalmar Fryklund
17. Remember that every account here represents a human being and treat everyone accordingly.
They all have feelings, dreams, hopes and a life just like you and thus should be treated
with respect, civility and courtesy.
Insulting others will almost always result in hurt feeling, which in turn will lead to a
retaliation until the both of you are just slinging hurtful things at each other, at the
end of which you both will feel worse than before, decreasing the total amount of
happiness in this world.
So do not forget that everyone on here is a human being as well. Except for spambots.
18. Don't Post in threads if the last post was a month ago, unless you want to reply to a post. This only applies in user reviews though

Post anything I might have missed, I will add it to the list. Follow the rules.

I learned that one the hard way.
You missed "## If you're being sarcastic and it's not immediately obviously to everyone, then make it more obvious. Some people will make you seriously and may get oftened."

I just realized there's a spelling mistake in my addition. If you want to fix it, it say "make" instead of "take". Just a small typo on my part.

I disagree with the idea you are trying to portray here, moderators aren't some ancient god that needs to take a sacrifice every day at midnight, people get banned for legitimate reasons. They know the rules or at least should know the rules and are given plenty of warnings.

This isn't how to get through the magical space-warping forest, its pretty straightforward to not get banned and really comes down to common sense and a little bit of empathy. What I don't understand is why you would want to help people who engage in misconduct and are punished accordingly for it. Moderators have a purpose, they aren't put in as some obstacle to dodge.

That said, I can appreciate the publishing of a 'How not to get banned' guide to make things extra clear, so here is my addition, you only need one rule:

1. Don't be an asshole.

I'm trying to help users not get banned. Troll or not they are human and deserve a shot for glory. Unless they are a bot, screw bots.

Hot to avoid ban:
Moderation is such a grey area on this forum. I feel I'm going to get infracted because I swore in this post.
Step 1: Don't be a fucking idiot.

End tutorial.

My personal addition would be to never personally attack someone, or insult a specific group or person. It always ends badly.

Though, I've done pretty well just following the, 'Report and move on' :D

[small][br]User received a warning for this post.[/small]

Mod Edit: It's a bad idea to pretend your post got moderated when it didn't. You might just evoke the wrath of the mods. -ChristopherRobin

Yes but there are still bad people and getting rid of them is what keeps this forum from becoming like other certain online message boards. My point is that people who are banned deserve it.

No you won't get infracted for swearing, but is vague, So I won't add it.

I have no idea how I've never been banned from a public discussion forum. I am, if only by my own standards, an utter bastard who only barely cleaves to the absolute minimum of acceptable politeness, yet I've almost never been disciplined for anything I say; and none of the instances I have been disciplined for occurred on this site. Hell if I know how that worked out.

My best guess is, the only reason I've never been banned is that I dislike calling people names. I generally don't do it. If you say something that offends me, I'll say, "That is a reprehensible thing you just said" rather than "You're reprehensible," and that apparently is enough to keep me in the good graces of your average moderator staff.

I guess it probably also helps that I generally take steps to linguistically own what I say. "You offend me" is clearly a statement about my personal feelings, not a blanket judgment like "You're offensive," which implies some kind of authority I clearly do not have.

It may count for something that I never intentionally lie. I'll be ironic at times (which I should know better than to do, because no one gives you the benefit of the doubt when it comes to internet irony), and I'll mix up my facts from time to time, but I will always be as honest as my limited mental faculties will permit me to be.

So...yeah, I guess the best advice I have to offer is to never call anyone names, to own what you say, and to be honest.

Ground-breaking advice, that.

It's supposed to be vague, it covers multiple things.

Stuff like "don't troll," "don't flame," "don't break any rules," and 'don't make low content posts." Stuff that should be common sense to people. Hence, don't be a fucking idiot.

You can just quote me and then copy paste the code for future use. Although I honestly don't know what people use this for.

This should be an obvious one but, don't post anything complaining about moderation being inconsistant or something similar. Mods take offense to that shit.
