My Aunt is very Catholic, she's like a Shiite Catholic. Not good for gays. Also, kinda racist.

My mom's sexist. She believes that if men and women were equal, there would be no men or women but instead a single sex like some frogs.
What does the Shiite sect have to do with Catholicism? Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding you...and does your mum think then that women are better than men? Or men are better than women? Just curious, s'all.

On topic, my family is pretty accepting, but my grandpa would cut my hair for me if I let it touch my shoulders and rip out any piercings I ever got. So that would be ageist, I suppose...or maybe it's just an old people thing.
About my mom, I have no idea. I said "Shiite" because that's the religion of Hezbollah the terrorist group. They don't get too much press anymore. I was just having fun with words.
And Al-Qaeda is Sunni. Sorry dude, I don't get your point.

Not really the place to get bogged down being pedantic, actually, so nevermind; having fun with words, fair enough.
Actually, Sunni and Shiite are both sects of Islam, the main difference being who teach group thinks Muhammed's power was passed on to after his death. The Shiites believe that it passed to his son, while the Sunni think it passed to the Caliphs, the Arabic Aristocracy. The best comparison that I can think of would be the Catholics and the Protestants; same set of rules, generally, only a semantic difference.

If i mucked that up, please excuse my ignorance.

Well my mom has some heavy prejudices to wards Polacks. She used to work in a grocery store and most people they caught for shoplifting were Polacks, now she uses the word Polack as synonymous with thief or scoundrel or just a person that is up to no good.

I know a gal who left her father because he went out to "Roll queers" which turned out to mean pick up a gay fella, act like you're going home with him, then kick his ass and take everything he had. She got furious over how ignorant and prejudice he was that she moved in with her mother. I would leave if I lived in a house like that too...

I seriously fell off my chair laughing at this. Your Grandpa is a hilarious man.

I'm not racist at all, I have never had problems with any body of any race or belief. But I always enjoy the racist jokes, not in the sense that I think they're true, they're just so horrible that I can't help but laugh. Even if it's directed at me, I'll laugh my ass off.

My dad has expressed some disappointment in today's black youth and ghetto mentality. I don't think that qualifies. But apparently my great grandma was pure, deep south confederate racist. "Negras" was her word. It's weird considering my grandpa was very involved in the civil rights movement and lost his job as a college professor for teaching black students.

Is using the term "Coloured" when talking about black people Racist? My parents use it often, and I don't know if it counts as racist or not. The problem is different terms become racist, sexist etc and there is know way of knowing what words are allowed or not as there is no common reference source.

One of my friends' dad is really racist. He got pissed when the presidential election was over.

My grandfather didn't care for black people, but he wasn't a racist while he was still alive. Do you see what I mean? It's hard to explain.

Isn't it funny that anyone who doesn't like the idea of President-Elect Obama becoming president, or someone who didn't vote for him is an auto racist?

Yeah, you're right, they're both the major sects of Islam.

Their basic difference is, as you said, concerning the line of succession after Muhammad's death, but I had a look last night and it seems there are quite a few more differences in both beliefs and practices [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shi%27a-Sunni_relations].

Interesting stuff!

All my family can be a little racist at times. Usually when an Asian annoys them, they'll be like, "Those stupid [enter horrible p word here I don't want to use]."
My dad was pretty bad, despite being Polish himself, and he had an all-year round tan, so people assumed he was Asian. I remember in reception or nursery, some boy said, "Your daddies a black man."
I pushed him and he pushed me back, so I started kicking the shit out of him. I was only about 6 XD

The women in my family are strong, so I've never really experienced sexism, apart from the odd "joke" my boyfriend makes about female gamers.

Whole family's pretty liberal, even my 101 year old grandfather is, even in today's standards. Unfortunately one of my sisters and her husband is somewhat nationalistic. Like voting for the BNP kind of nationalistic. We're working on educating her as to the error of her ways, but it's a long process. It's sort of embarrassing really.

My dad is complicated. He's both a Stalinist (born in USSR) and gay. He doesn't trust Moslems, but he can recognize who's Moslem and who isn't (he prefers Obama over McCain, but loves Nader, but hats the two-party sustem in America) and he despises Chechens (although I have to say for good reason considering my family's history with them) and he's always making jokes about Albanians and their numerous children.

So he's not a racist in a traditional American sense, but he's quite nationalistic. I love him for exponential political incorrectness, and he's a great dad.

My step-grandmother, married to my rich, lawyer grandfather (other side of the family) is a fervent Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh fan, so she was blabbing shit about how Obama was Moslem and was going to give all of our taxpayer money to the blacks and stuff.

My mother's side of the family are mildly anti-gay and traditional Republicans, and my father's side of the family are all communist atheists who fart all the time. I could probably do a totally believable sitcom about their interactions.
Your father's side of the family sounds awesome. And I would totally watch that show.

My grandmother on my father's side was rather racist, my cousin just got married to a native american guy, and she didn't really like that, she also said and I quote: "at least she didn't marry that black guy".

Other than that my family is open minded and intelligent. my grandmother on my mom'm side of the family sometimes uses racist names like negro and the like but only because that was how they talked when she was a kid.

Some people that I know HATE Blacks. I'm talking like KKK hate and its hard to try to convince them that they are people too. It makes me really, really sad.
