First of all make it about sonic and no others (except mabey tails) and have an actual story with it, plus no f-ing paying coins to get to a level.

KEEP IT 2D.

It's obvious but that's the major flaw Sega seem to not understand. It can have 3D graphics but KEEP IT 2D.

My suggestion would be incineration preferably by hairspray and a lighter. Or simply thrown out of a moving car window would suffice. Would have to be a very fast car tho..say one with "blast processing".

The best way to make a better sonic game nowadays is simply not to bother making another sonic game.

I think most would agree with me that they'd rather play nothing over a new sonic game.

I'd remake sonic one, with better graphics, then maybe 2, 3 and sonic and knuckles.

Other than that I'd let the poor bugger rest in a retirement home and occasionally make an appearance in a game not based around him like a old wrestler trying to relive the glory days.

I once described it by saying Sonic needs to be turned into a racing game since 3d makes it possible to actually see what's in front of you so going at insane speeds actually works unlike in 2d where you couldn't see more than a split second's worth of running ahead so actually doing anything yourself when running was suicidal and most of the fast parts were pretty much on rails (rarely literally) as you watched catapults, ramps and whatever else the game has string together what amounts to a cutscene during which you can press jump to get flung off into a bottomless pit. Later I learned they already made that kind of game with Sonic: The Secret Rings which is getting a sequel that's already been reviewed by Nintendo Power.

As for keeping it 2D, I think 2D Sonic has fallen into the same trap as Megaman lately, namely SPIKES OUT THE WAZZOO. The games have too many deathtraps that hurt the level design badly.

Oh, with a brutal death metal soundtrack
And give sonic guns
And MOAR friends
And make every character as awesome as Marine from Sonic Rush
And... stealth levels where you have to take things real slow
AND! AND! AND!

*hyperventilates due to over exposure to awesome ideas*

Make it a 2.5D, game (between 2D and 3D),
keep the running to Sonic (if you want him fighting make Knuckles do that)
or a remake of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 or 2

OR

Kill sonic and put Knuckles as the main character :D

Keep sonic about deleriously fast gameplay, No transformations(unleashed)
2D and 3D transitioning was great in unleashed yes, but i'd also do what they did in Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, ie: give you a choice to which character to play rather than SA2 forcing you to play as other characters, the other characters were fine but it was nice not to be thrown around to play as other characters when you were getting used to the pace of play.

I think it's best if we stop making a lot of Sonic threads.

Me myself, I would probably make it like the daytime stages in Sonic Unleashed.

I have expounded this before.

There shall be two commandments: Platforming, and Exploration.

There will be many places to go in levels other than the critical path to complete the level.

There will be a well designed player movement model which gives fine control over the character, and allows precise platforming.

"Speed" in this game will be attained as it was in the originals, not through having a character who moves particularly quickly, but by maintaining momentum through navigation of obstacles.

3D, but not limited to running on a forward-track. Then put most of the effort into getting the greatest sense of speed possible.
