Helios

As in, the thing that guys like Copernicus and Galileo were trying to prove our planet revolved around. (Heliocentrism)

wtf if the point of calling the sun something different every language calls it something different and changing it would make no difference as it would go from cool to commonplace

Our sun is actually called Sol.

Sol is awesome.
is that official? or just some sci fi twaddle?
A bit of both. It can be used officially, but is usually used to refer to a rotation around the sun. Interestingly, the East Asian term is 日, while in Vietnam it's nhật or thái dương.
Most people just use Sun.

Sun is just another word for a star, as previously mentioned our sun's private name is Sol.
It's isn't. It's the English spelling of the northern European name for sun from that mythology. Sol is the latin name and Helios is the Greek. It's called Sol because latin was the main language of science in Europe for a long while.
The way I see it latin is language to turn to for names (either that or greek). Back to my point, you can call any other star sun as well but you can't call it Sol. Hence it is its private name, same for moon - you can call any chunk of rock orbiting a planet moon, for instance Jupiter has moons (with their own names), but our moon's name is Luna.
I bet that you enjoy walking your canis lupus familiaris in the silvis. Sun is the proper name for our star in English. Other stars are called stars or by whatever other name they have, funnily enough. The difference between the Moon and a moon is confusing but you can call them satellites instead.

I'm guessing you watch doctor who because otherwise you would know that sol is really the name of an earth day on any other planet other than earth.(Or the name if the sun in rome)
No. I don't.

No. You are wrong.

Sol is Latin.
Madame, these short sentences convey a feeling of hostility, which leads to retaliation, and eventual punishment of the instigator, which would be you.

OT: Too late now, it's been ingrained into our minds as the Sun, and people don't like change.
Kind of like how Pluto is still a proper planet damnit!
Don't blame me - I have a terrible influence sitting next to me :p
Well then, drown out horrible influence with alcohol drugs gratuitous nudity music?

Yeah, but who really wants to say, "Oh man, Gliese 581 is so bright tonight"?

Can we all agree that English is very, very stupid sometimes?
Like, it's grammatically correct to call the Sun, Sol.
But you can't call a rhino a nose.
They are both literal Latin translations. So yeah, English is weird, and I want Lucifer to be our home star [sub]runner[/sub].
