It's the solar system right? Sol is fine with me. Sun is fine too, since everybody with half a brain will have an idea what you mean (or any local variant, which would be 'zon' in my language).

Daystar doesn't make sense and sound kinda silly...

Well I can't say that I enjoyed walking my canis lupus familiaris (which was not actually mine...) in the silvis but somebody had to or the house would smell quite awfull. You can call our star Sun but it doesn't change the fact that any other star is a sun as well. Now I don't go around saying "Look at how Sol shines brightly today and poaceae is of delightfull green" but if we look for specific terms then latin is usefull, the common names in English are quite general and as those exampled showed refer either to a specific object or any other object of its kind, which isn't that important in a daily discussion because everyone knows what you're talking about when you say sun - it is only by comparison with other stars that we find a need to call our sun something else.
The Sun is the only Sun. If someone mistakes Ben Nevis for Mt Fuji that doesn't mean that we need a new name for Mt Fuji.
Technically, you could call it Sol, or even thái dương and you'd be right. In some language, at least.

No you can't. The star at the center of our solar system is "the sun". It's the only sun. There is no other sun. That's its name. It's not the same case as the moon. Not every star is a sun. Only ours is, because that's its name. It's a nifty little sci-fi trope to call every star with bodies orbiting it a sun, but that's not the case realistically.

The sun is -only- the star at the center of -the- Solar System (ie, our solar system). Any other star in any other solar system is just a star. And Sol is just the Latin name of the sun. I don't speak Latin, so bug off.
I believe you got your info wrong, a sun means a star and a star means a sun. If you call it "the sun" chances are you mean the star in the middle of our hmm...solar system... Its not a nifty sci-fi thing to call stars "sun" its a correct term, though confusing in daily conversation.

I don't really care so much about Sol and Lunar, just so long as we can all agree to rename Earth "Terra". It is clearly a far more awesome name and should have been changed years ago, the fact that it still hasn't annoys me greatly.

Aquae Terram means Land of Water, so YEAH.

Google Translate, you never get old. :3
Unless you're translating an old language, but whatever.

What are you gonna call the moon?
"Nightrock"?
Dude, yes.
Or maybe just Luna. That's pretty cute.
I think the Spaniards beat you to that one (and the Italians and the...).

My hat's off to you for making an interesting topic.

Helios

As in, the thing that guys like Copernicus and Galileo were trying to prove our planet revolved around. (Heliocentrism)
Helios is all seeing, I don't want to name our sun after the guy who watches me shower.

Are we starting a sun cult? If we are can we hold the meeting at night?
How about Amun-Ra then?

Damn, the Spaniards ruin everything. Like Apocolypto.
You're welcome, Mr. Avatarless. You may continue wearing a hat if you so desire.

Lets say you know a guy named Alex, its completely fine to talk about Alex with your buddies because they know who you are talking about, but when you go visit another town for instance and meet 3 new people named Alex, it might be beneficial to explain which Alex you are talking about here. Catch my drift?

So, one could be Dayalex, another Humanalex, and another Aquaeterramalex! They all make sense, just some are cooler than others.
