So hey, how about this crazy weather we're having?
You mean the crazy, globally-warmed unnatural Summer... oh SNAP we can't even talk about the WEATHER without it being controversial now...

Did you check that thread out? Because I'm guessing it's not about what you think it is.

I do poke at the feminism(or gender-identity)-topics every now and then when I feel like losing my faith in humanity, but stay away from any threads about Anita, because I don't care about her. I agree with some of her points, but she doesn't say anything interesting or new so I don't care to watch her videos to know what she actually says.

Every once in awhile I say that to myself. Always after I should have said it to myself the three times before that day when it would have been just as appropriate and I'm completely drained, but what can I say, I'm a masochist.

I have to ask...

WTF is Anita? Am I missing out on something Earth-shattering here?

I feel woefully uninformed.

The obvious one is religion and politics , because i know little about both .

The less obvious ones are , LGBT , sexism , feminism , and racism. Because those threads litterally get me angry .

Then i rarely go into threads about someone dying or getting hurt . Because i'm in the " meh , shit happens crowd ". If i do go into those threads , it's just for a quick peek , which is hazardous enough as it is .

And then there is rape/pedophilia . I'm not touching rape with a 10 foot pole someone else is holding . Pedophilia, because it's hard to have an intelligent conversation about pedophiles in real life , let alone the internet ( and yes there is room for intelligent conversation/debate about pedophiles ,that's all i'm going to say) .

Where do you hang out here on the boards if you hadn't heard of her?

Ah, she's a feminist blogger/vlogger whatever. Explains why I haven't heard of her.

Answer is - I probably saw the post had to do with feminism and ignored it.

Thanks for answering my question though. ;)

Mass Effect threads, for the most part. Ever since the whole ending thing happened they became really unpleasant.

I participate in feminism threads from time to time, but I poke them with a stick first.

I usually avoid the threads that looks like a hot button topic. I am a terrible debater myself and because of that I try to stay out of them. Though most debates (that I have personally seen) on this site don't seem to be actual debates. They are just competitions to see how long you can say the same thing to the other person just with slightly different wording until one side gives. So yeah don't really see the point in that anyway.

Though I don't really avoid many topics, I am just not interested enough to read them. Though most threads nowadays don't really catch my interest. Must be why I stick to the Forum games and User groups.

I too stayed out of the whole feminism related threads (like Dragon Crown and Anita etc) and other controversials stuff. I ain't sophisticated enough to form my comments to be well written nor do do I really cared about it (why the hell some people get so worked up about it, it's fun to played games right?).
Also these days I just stay out of MLP threads even when it's not related to EN but in saying so I also staying out of EN threads aswell.

All threads involving feminism, sexism, and generally heavily opinionated topics, I avoid at all cost. I don't have the willpower to respond on certain subjects. I remember I made an unpopular choice on that whole issue with that LoL player and for the next five days my inbox was flooded with people who said the same thing every quote. I just stopped responding after the third quote.

Pretty much sexism/feminism/Anita threads if I can. Often I'm lucky enough to be ignored when I do say something, even though the solutions are obvious (less talk, more feminist-centered game development/promotion and create the feminist genre!).

And soon the 2DS threads that are showing up, if the questions, confusion and knee-jerks keep happening. It's gotten the attention of the wrong audience, and at this point it's not going to rest until Nintendo figures out how to satisfy both the intended and unintended audience...

I stay out of most anything that related to feminism (or Sarkeesian, because frankly she is of no real consequence).

Also, anything that relates to Mass Effect, as well as My Little Pony and, well, anything where something has been massively taken out of proportion.

Outside of this forum, when I played WoW I would stay away from any threads to do with theorycrafting, because I prefer trial and error. I believe there is nothing wrong with theorycrafting as an available resource, but I am completely against people forcing other people to use it. If a player wants to discover his best results through trial and error instead of using what some players consider a "cheat sheet" that basically strips away the fun of end-game and reduces it purely to numbers, I am all for that even if it means we succeed in end-game less often. There is a lot of fun and joy in (or at the end of) discovering what brings the best results ourselves and working together to achieve said results instead of mindlessly following what someone else (or a calculator made by someone else) says we should do. This is one of very few things I am unwilling to change my mind on. Basically anything else is fair game to me.

I LIKE TALKING ABOUT MY PHILOSOPHICAL WHAT-EVERS!

I've been ignoring the feminism threads as of late, because, you know, blah.

But I do really love debating. Especially when there's a few people on here that are worth debating every once in a while. But then I go and comment on a clearly irrational person's comment, and I end up debating someone very silly. Running circles around a turtle loses it's fun pretty quick.

And I don't know if it's trolling if I'm clearly offending someone on a silly subject, but I whole-heartedly disagree with them. Like that recent baseball thread. I cracked jokes about how baseball isn't a sport, but an activity. Obviously, a couple people took offense to their beloved activity not being classified as a sport. Is that trolling because I wasn't taking an activity as serious as they were?

Anything-ism really. I'm outta those ones. I can't make a single jokey comment without someone taking it the wrong way and going ballistic on me. All I DO are jokey comments so fuck that. Y'know in the next racism thread I might just post the 200% Nigga song in it and see what happens. :D

I don't even know who this Anit-whatever is and I don't particularly want to know either.

Gun threads I can do but I don't add much because it's very much an American culture thing, people living in England are rather one-minded over the whole guns thing y'know. Bioware threads I can do because I usually make good points and don't mindlessly rage plus i'm also keeping my eye out for the next Zeel. I stay the hell out of R&P because lol R&P

Hey, hey what's wrong with EN threads? The last lot have been pretty decent! He ain't THAT bad surely. He talks himself in circles and solves his problem in his own OP sometimes and can be over-specific but hey, at least it's interesting right?

Or did I miss the part where he committed some heinous crime against The Internet earlier on?

nope. getting outta here.

:p
OT:
I don't mind entering those kinds of threads, but I read some of the posts first to see how the situation so far is.
If I walked in and everything is already on fire, then it's time to scooch on out.

It'd probably be healthier for me personally if I just avoided them on sight, but the chance of some non-flammable discussion on controversial topics might be helpful to some. So long as it stays uh... not-on-fire.

Well if you feel you don't personally have anything to contribute to these arguments, or that these particular issues to don't interest or pertain to you, then avoiding them is the most mentally healthy action you could take.

However, if any of these issues are important to you, or will affect something important to you, and you stay silent, you are in very real danger of solutions being decided without you. Solutions you may not care for.

"I am staying out of this one." threads have also become incredibly popular, in case you didn't notice.
But the ones I hate the most are those "look at this fucked up headline I caught, here's a link to the article". Most people just wanna bait you with some yellowy tabloid newsflash about something that sounds way more fucked up than it really is. Most of the time they haven't even read the article themselves.

Well, after seeing what some of the recent Jimquisition and Zero Punctuation threads devolved into, I kinda avoided them.

Oh noes! Yatzhee, the Super Cynic with a tongue adept at finding colorful ways to cuss, made an almost joke not really making fun of transgendered people! We must burn him! Burn him and flay him alive!
Yeah, I didn't really bother reading or commenting there.

Also, anytime someone says that "The Escapist is publishing controversial things for page views", I instantly disregard the rest of their post.
