I believe we may just have a gaming travesty on our hands...

They have basically turned gaming into a reality tv show.
Some where, an angel is crying.

On a unrelated note, how come when they go to simulate a shooting game, they do it with paintball? Airsoft would fit a lot more 'cus instead of reloading a bunch of balls into a top hopper, they would actually have to reload magazines and their is a bigger diversity of weapons to pick from.

I hate to be the one to say this, but I'm thinking that anything that promotes gaming as a mainstream acceptible pastime and helps to bring awareness and understanding of it to more people is a good thing for the industry, even if it is a sub-american idol reality show...

So you actually saw an episode, huh? How scripted did the lines seem?

...I guess the idea of high-spectacle competitive has some merit. You know, since it already exists.

But...a gaming reality show?! I'm going to wash my eyes out and ignore this thread now.

What did you expect, really? That gamers might actually be depicted as normal, rational human beings? Nah. It's cheaper to stereotype, plus you make people happy by not forcing them to think. This show encapsulates the reasons I don't watch TV anymore.

I do like the idea of incorporating what each game is about into a real life challenge. I'd love to play Halo based paintball.

But I gotta agree with SimuLord, competitive gaming doesn't really have a TV market. I don't see how this show could possibly make it to the finale without being canceled.

Did anyone else notice how they mentioned all those gamers from around the world in the beginning, but then revealed that the show only focuses on 14 or however many there were American gamers?

Did I miss something, or is the United States really that arrogant?
All the contestents are American because whoever started the show wanted to appeal to the target audience, which is males 14-30 years old in the U.S.

And yes, the U.S. is that arrogant.

So reality TV meets gaming?

Who came up with this? I bet these gamers aren't even the best of the best. Just the ones that are the most marketable.

Well, that looks utterly stupid. However, I have a definite solution on how to solve the problem. The whole "draw" of the show is that they play out video games in real life? Well, let's have them play Smart Bomb. They have 30 seconds to disarm a bomb...that can't be disarmed, and is triggered remotely in 5 seconds. Instant ratings, and an apology to every true gamer that this show slaps in the face.

Exactly. Proof? Please note that all of them are somewhat attractive and (for the most part) in great shape. I'm not saying that that in itself is impossible, but for all of the US's so-called "best gamers" to be that good-looking lacks credibility.

This week's game is...Portal. You have five minutes to escape from the enrichment center before the deadly neurotoxin kills you.

(Kill them GLaDOS, please, for the love of God, kill them all)

Why the hell do people care so much about competitive gaming to the point they put on tournaments like this? Games were originally designed as entertainment. That's exactly why I want to become a game developer, because along with cinema and theatre (my other passions) I enjoy creating entertainment. Games were not meant for such competitive play. It's one thing to 'pwn n00bs' on L4D and CoD4 and so on, and to play those in a competitive way. That's all well and good, as long as people realise that it's just a game and has no bearing on their real lives. Except for their friends laughing because they got killed by a Tank on Easy in No Mercy. But when people try and do such tournaments, then it gets out of hand. I have no problem with the concept of tournament gaming in general (if it's done for fun, for example my flatmates had a PES tournament a while back, although we never actually finished it). But to this extreme, it takes all the joy out of what is essentially a fun pastime and nothing more.

I thought gaming was safe from stupid reality shows, I guess I was wrong. Seriously though, when they started talking about Rock Band and then asked if they could play a real guitar, I couldn't help but

Reminded me of this though: http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/155857/?tag=Guitar%20Hero
